It is with great pleasure that Union High School announces the 2019/20 Head Prefects.
This is an outstandingly capable, confident and humble team of leaders from within our new prefect body (as announced last month).
The Head Prefects are:

On Saturday, 12 October, Union’s u/13A cricketers played a 50-over match against the u/13B side of Port Elizabeth’s Grey Junior School.
In lovely sunny weather, Union won the toss and elected to bat first.
Union’s top order laid a solid foundation, but, in the end, a lack of concentration led to the batsmen only managing a score of 119
Union’s bowlers then replied with a calculated attack. Unfortunately, they struggled to keep the batsmen under pressure, which allowed Grey to reach Union’s total with 7 wickets to spare.
Union High School’s annual Senior Prizegiving Ceremony, held on Friday evening, 11 October, was once again a wonderful occasion for the Union learners, their families, members of the school community and staff to come together to celebrate the individual and collective achievements of Union’s learners in all areas of school life.
As the school’s pianists delivered a set of special performances, parents took their seats quietly and expectantly.
Listening to “Shallow” from the movie ‘A Star is Born’ played by Brigette Oelofsen, John Lennon and Paul McCarthy’s “Let it Be” played by Anna Pringle, “Joueur de Harpe” played by Caitrin Spence and “Comptine d’un autie ètrè” played by Jamie Jaftha, they waited to celebrate these moments of achievement with their children.
The senior choir then treated the audience to a performance of “Gaudeamus Igitur” while the members of staff entered the hall and took their seats on stage.
The audience was welcomed by Headmaster Mr William Pringle, who introduced the evening’s guest speaker, Mr David Langmead, chairman of the School Governing Body.
Following Mr Langmead’s speech, Mr Pringle then delivered the traditional Headmaster’s Address, during which he briefly sketched the achievements of the year.
The senior choir’s performance of “When you believe” by Stephen Schwartz received a resounding applause.
Once again it was after this musical interlude, that the distribution of the prizes took place. The prizes were presented by special guest Mrs Sandy McNaughton.
This was followed by vocalists Taylyn Miller and Zintle Maki, accompanied on the piano by Hannah Watermeyer, singing “You Say” by Lauren Diagle.
The highlight of the evening was the induction of the 2019/20 Head Prefects. Congratulations to Bowen Langmead (Headboy), Sakhe Booi (Headgirl), Brett Amsterdam (Deputy Headboy) and Laetitia Theron (Deputy Headgirl).
To conclude the evening, the outgoing head prefects of 2018/19, Peter Watermeyer and Jenna McNaughton, delivered a vote of thanks.
After this very inspiring and successful ceremony, it is hoped that our learners will find in the words spoken, and the experiences lived, clear points from which to chart their course.
We congratulate all of those who excelled in their academic, culture, service or sport and consequently received their well-deserved awards.

The UHS Primary Department’s prizegiving ceremony – during which the Grade 5 to 7 learners were awarded for their hard work throughout the year – was held on Friday morning, 11 October, in the Union High School hall.
Upon arrival, guests were welcomed to the school with the beautiful sounds of the junior marimba band and after everyone had filed into the hall, the junior choir, accompanied by Mrs Sanette Brink, delivered a stunning rendition of ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragons.
Caytah-Leigh Koeberg and Tyra Binney then led the devotion.
The school’s headmaster, Mr William Pringle, delivered the customary Headmaster’s Address, after which Mr David Langmead, chairman of the School Governing Body, gave a beautiful speech in which he encouraged the learners to follow their dreams. To conclude the speeches, Mrs Yvette Cloete (Head of the Primary Department) delivered a report of the year’s activities.
Next up on the programme was the presentation of the academic prizes, which was this year conducted by special guest, Mrs Tasneem Mahomed.
After this was concluded, Aaminah Steele, accompanied by Sasha Cochrane on the piano, delivered a beautiful performance of the song ‘This is me’ from The Greateast Showman.
Pianist Erin Gedult then entertained the audience with the piece ‘Arabeque No 2’ by Burgmuller.
Lastly, the music, cultural and sports awards were presented, after which the ceremony was concluded with a word of thanks delivered by Grade 7 learner Terry Mabuni.

In 2008, a group of 32 Grade 1s started their school careers at Union Preparatory School.
For the following twelve years – as they went from prep school, to middle school, to high school – they learned together, laughed together, played sport together and had a lot of fun together, sharing life’s ups and downs as they went along
To celebrate this memorable 12-year journey, the UPS Grade 4 class hosted the annual A to 10 Dinner on Thursday evening, 10 October.
The A to 10 Dinner, held especially in honour of learners who have spent their entire school careers at Union, is one of the great traditions at Union, and always a very special occasion.
To start the evening, the Grade 4 learners welcomed the matrics and their parents and escorted them into the UPS Dome, after which all were entertained with song and dance, with the main event certainly being the different versions of the dozi-do dance.
As always, the A to 10 Dinner was filled with fun, lots of laughter and to end the evening, a beautifully prepared dinner in the Tony Burrell Union.

With many of the school’s athletes competing in multiple sporting codes, it is often difficult for the Union Schools to field a large team of biathletes due to other weekend sports commitments.
With the third league event of the biathlon season being held mid-week – on Wednesday, 9 October – it was fortunately possible for the school to field a larger-than-usual team, with thirteen biathletes travelling to Port Elizabeth to compete.
Despite the weather being somewhat chilly and fairly wet, the conditions were actually close to ideal for a good performance all-round. This was reflected in the big improvement in points scored by most of the athletes this week.
The learners’ stellar efforts saw some of them being selected to represent the EP teams in their respective age groups during the upcoming EP Championships which will be held in Port Elizabeth next Saturday, 19 October.
Congratulations to Mia Botha (A team), Mack Rubidge (B team), Jade Shires (B team), Elia Railton (B team), Bowen Langmead (Development team), Drew Dobinson (Development team), Rebecca Copeman (Development team) and Tyra Binney (Development team).
The special guest at Union High School’s assembly this morning, was none other than Old Unionite Mr Laszlo Maya (Headboy of the Class of 2012).
Mr Maya was at the school to accept a donation of R2 000 on behalf of the Maya Deaf Foundation (MDF). The money was raised by Union High School’s Interact Club through various fundraisers this year.
The Maya Deaf Foundation (MDF), based in Graaff-Reinet, aims to help bridge the gap between the hearing and the deaf by providing a range of services to those affected by hearing loss. They rely solely on donations and fundraising efforts to further their cause.
Union is honoured to be able to contribute to this foundation and its endeavours.

Months of dedicated practice, matches and trials have resulted in a young Union cricketer being selected to represent his province.
Union High School is immensely proud of Brett Amsterdam who will represent the Eastern Province (EP) u/17 cricket side.
We wish him the best of luck!
Having heard of Graaff-Reinet’s dire water situation, Grey Junior School’s u/13 cricketers, who visited the town today for a fixture against Union, brought 155 litres of water along with them, which they donated to Union’s hostels.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to them for this wonderful gesture!

On Saturday, 12 October, when a fire that started in the Sundays River threatened the buildings and facilities situated near the riverbank, there were no shortage of helping hands to help fight the fire.
Throughout the course of the day, from when the fire started in the early afternoon until after the sun had set, members of staff, learners, Old Unionites, parents, emergency services and members of the broader community all bound together to do what they could to douse the flames.
With the help of all of these remarkable individuals, the fire was brought under control by nightfall and we are exceptionally grateful to them for their efforts and willingness to assist.
