Union High School kicked off its 101st year on Wednesday, 15 January, with the arrival of three new members of staff who joined the Union family.

Next Saturday, 25 January, the gardens of Union Preparatory School will be brimming with ladies dressed in their finery, delicious eats and plenty of laughter as Union High School hosts its annual Gisela Kingwill mother and daughter morning.
This delightful event is a favourite Founders’ Weekend tradition and a wonderful way to celebrate the special women in your life. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, and friends are all invited to share in the fun.
Guests can expect inspiring talks by guest speakers Corli Schoeman and Samantha Graham-Maré and are encouraged to dress up according to this year’s theme, ‘Bright & Beautiful’.

The eight Union High School chess players participating in the 2020 edition of the SA Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) in Johannesburg thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
James Rose-Innes, Tracy Petitt, Mihan Campbell, Wade Edwards, Cassidy Goliad, Na’eem Mahomed, Neelon Fourie and Camran Swartz pitted their skills against avid chess players from all over South Africa from 4 -12 January.
While there, they have also been fortunate to experience a record-breaking simultaneous chess exhibition by Super Grandmaster Levon Aronian, one of the top chess players in the world.
Union extends its sincere thanks to all the officials who offered up a week of their time to accompany the team to Johannesburg, especially to Mr Trevor Zali, for driving the bus, Mr CJ Koopman, who served as the team’s coach and to Liano Naidoo, the team’s assistant coach/manager.

There was a wonderful atmosphere on our beautiful Union High School campus earlier today (Wednesday, 8 January) as the Class of 2019 gathered in reunion and celebration.
The 70-strong Class of 2019 was Union’s biggest Grade 12 class since 2015!
Of these 70 learners who wrote the recent NSC examination, 64 passed. (This is also the highest numbers of matriculants for Union since 2015.)
Our top performers for 2019 each achieved 3 distinctions in their respective subjects:

In total, our Class of 2019 produced 48 A-symbols collectively, with 66% of the learners qualifying for entry to study towards a bachelor’s degree.
Union High School would like to express its sincere gratitude to all the members of staff who played such an integral part in the education of the Class of 2019 over the past 12 years.
They have, as always, provided a superb platform for the learners to achieve to the very best of their abilities. A special word of thanks is also extended to the families of every single one of our learners for their steadfast support throughout the learners’ years of study.
Although we are disappointed that our pass rate for the NSC examination has dropped from 96% in 2018 to 91,4% in 2019, we remain, as always, very proud of our learners and wish them all of the very best as they embark upon an exciting future.
Union High School is delighted to welcome exchange student Daisy Sears to our campus this term as part of the school’s annual Salisbury Exchange Programme.
Upon her arrival in South Africa, Daisy was warmly welcomed by her host family, Jacques, Bronwyn, Tara and Aidan Ferreira.
Daisy will spend the next couple of days getting to know her host family, before starting her term at Union on Wednesday, 15 January.

Union High School hosted another successful edition of their annual Senior Cricket Festival from Thursday, 9 January to Saturday, 11 January.
Ten teams, including Edgemead High School, Queen’s College Boys’ High School, Milnerton High School, Nico Malan, Framesby, Stirling High School, Brandwag, Muir College and Daniël Pienaar, participated.
Over the course of three days there were a number of high team scores, some big hitting from the batsmen, quite a few big wicket hauls from the spinners and plenty of smart cricket from the captains.
• Union’s 1st XI faced Edgemead High School on the first day of the festival in a 50-over game.
Union batted first and scored 184. Jaden Brotherton (58) and Brett Amsterdam (51) were Union’s top scorers.
Edgemead then went in to bat and was bowled out for 91.
Bowlers Jaden Brotherton took 5 for 18 and Brett Amsterdam 5 for 31.
Union won the match by 93 runs.
• On Friday, Union faced Queen’s College in a 50-over game. The visiting team batted first and scored 231.
Union’s top batsman was Jaden Brotherton, who took 2 for 30.
Union then went in to bat and unfortunately only managed to put 73 runs on the board. Queen’s College won by 158 runs.
• In their last match of the festival, Union faced Milnerton High School in in action-packed T20 on Saturday, 11 January.
Union went in to bat first and scored 98. Top scorers were James Pienaar (19) and Brett Amsterdam (35).
Milnerton then went in to bat and scored 99 for 6.
Jarrod Naudé took 2 for 14. Union lost by 4 wickets.
