| 5 - 6 Jan | Senior Cricket Festival - UHS 1st Thursday 5 January vs Stirling (Captains Declaration)UHS won the toss and sent stirling in to bat. UHS bowled Stirling out for 114 runs after 48 overs. Best bowlers were J.Vers 4/17 and D. Marais 2/26. UHS then went in to bat and after a storming blitz of runs, reached the score with 6 wickets down. Best batsmen D.Olivier 37, J.Vers 28 and D. Marais 21 not out. UHS won the game by 4 wickets. Friday 6 January vs Paarl Boys (45 overs)UHS won the toss and sent Paarl to bat. UHS bowled Paarl out after 44 overs with a total of 153. Best bowlers were D.Marais 4/15 and N.Naude 3/29. UHS then went in to bat and after a sturdy partnership between J.Vers and L.Hobson set the platform, UHS managed to reach the score with 6 wickets down. Best batsmen were J.Vers 59, D.Olivier 29 and N.Naude 20. UHS won the game by 4 wickets. Saturday 6 January vs Pinelands (50 overs)UHS won the toss and elected to bat first. UHS was bowled out for 132 runs after 37 overs. Best batsmen were J.Vers 29, L.Hobson 19. Pinelands then went in to bat, after a slow start the UHS bowlers managed to bowl Pinelands out for 127. Best bowlers were S. Koeberg 3/12, J.Moore 2/0 and D.Marais 2/30. UHS won the game by 5 runs |

| 14 Jan | Senior Cricket 1st XI vs Pearson (50 overs): UHS won the toss and elected to bat first. UHS batted well and managed to score 216 for 7 in their 50 overs. Best batsmen were J.Vers 52, N. Naude 82. Pearson went in to bat, UHS bowlers managed to bowl Pearson out for 82. Best bowlers were D.Marais 4/22 in 9 overs, J. Vers 2/13 in 7 overs . UHS won the game by 132 runs. UHS 2nd vs Pearson (50 overs): UHS bowled first and bowled Pearson out for 183. The pick of the bowlers was Michael Dry who took 4/15. UHS then went into bat and were all out for 83. Well done to M. Dry again who contributed 19 runs with the bat. UHS lost the game by 100 runs. U/15A vs Kingswood (50 overs): On Saturday the U15A cricket team travelled to Grahamstown to play against Kingswood. UHS won the toss and elected to bat first. After a lack of concentration by the UHS batters UHS was bowled out for 45 runs. Best batsman was T.Naude who scored 10 runs. Kingswood went in to bat and passed the score with 1 wicket down. Best bowler was S. Khedama who took 1/12. UHS lost the game by 9 wickets. Ed Lunnon Fun Run Jessica Charles did extremely well by winning the junior 10km race. Imke Marais came second in the 5km fun run for ladies. Butsha Ngweniso and Sakhi Matross both did well by being in the top 20 finishers of the 5km fun run. All the other Union runners received medals for finishing well before the cut off time. There were over 1000 participants. |

| 19 Jan | Senior Cricket UHS 1st XI vs Nico Malan: UHS won the toss and elected to bat first. UHS batted well and managed to score 167 for just 1 wicket down in their 20 overs. Best batsmen were J.Vers 43 not out, N. Naude 72 not out and L. Hobson 36. Nico Malan went in to bat but struggled against a very strong UHS attack. UHS bowlers managed to bowl Nico Malan out for 67 runs. Best bowlers were N.Naude 4/13 in 4 overs, J. Vers 2/2 in 2 overs and C. Green 3/12 in 4 overs . UHS won the game by 100 runs. |

| 21 Jan | Senior Cricket UHS 2nd vs Marlow: UHS bowled and fielded well in patches but also let themselves down with some sloppy fielding and erratic bowling. Marlow were eventually dismissed for 218 runs. Best bowler was S. Rudman who took 3/21 in 9 overs. UHS then went into bat and performed well below what they are capable of and were all out for 63 runs. UHS lost the game by 155 runs. Junior Cricket vs Herbert Hurd U13A: Herbert Hurd won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 130 in their 40 overs with 8 wickets down. The best bowler was M. Harpur with 4 for 15 in 8 overs. UHS struggled with the bat and could only score 60 runs all out. UHS lost the match by 70 runs. U11A: UHS won the toss and elected to bat first. UHs were bowled out for 47 runs in 24 overs. Best batsman was J. Duthie 6, B. Amsterdam 5 and B. Langmead 5. Herbert Hurd went in to bat and managed to pass the score in the 21st over with just 1 wicket down. Best bowler was mike Kriege who took 1/10 in 5 overs. UHS lost the game by 9 wickets. U11B: UHS lost the toss and were sent in to bat first. UHS were bowled out in the 15th over with just 39 runs. Best batsman was Gregan 10 Sibusiso 5 Litha 4. Herbert Hurd passed the score with 6 wickets down in the 14th over. Best bowler Blayden. 2/7 in 5 overs and Khanyisa 3/10 in 4 overs. UHS lost the game by 4 wickets. |

| 26 Jan | Senior Cricket On Thursday 26 January the UHS 1st team played against the St Andrews in a 20 over match. St Andrews batted first and scored 131 for 1 wicket down in their 20 overs. UHS then went in to bat and could only manage to score 78 for 7 wickets down in 20 overs. Best batsmen were Dean Hobson who scored 20 and Dean Marais 20. UHS lost the game by 53 runs. |

| 28 Jan | Founders Day Cricket UHS 1st vs Old Boys (50 overs). Old Boys batted first and scored 153 all out. Best bowler was Dean Marais who took 4/11 in 8 overs. UHS then went in to bat and fell 2 runs short of the target. Best batsman was Lance Hobson who scored 44. UHS lost the game by 2 runs 2nds vs Old Boys (50 overs): Old Boys batted first and scored 190 all out in 40 overs. UHS then went in to bat and could only manage to score 161 runs. Best batsmen were M. Dry 41 who scored 44, S. Rudman 29 and A.Mali 21. UHS lost the game by 21 runs. U/15 vs Old Boys (50 overs): UHS batted first and scored 224 in their 50 overs. Best batsmen were J. Crankshaw who scored 69, M. Knott-Craig 25 and D. Koeberg 21. Old Boys then went in to bat and could only manage to score 161 runs. Best bowler was D. Koeberg 2/11. UHS Won the game by 63 runs. Swimming A group of junior and senior swimmers took part in a B age group gala on Saturday, where there were over 600 participants. All our swimmers did well and most swam personal best times. | 6 Feb | Senior Tennis The Top 8 Senior Boys and Girls played a match against Middelburg on Monday. The match was closely contested and Union High won by 9 matches to 7. Well played to all our boys and girls. |

| 8 Feb | Junior Cricket U/11A vs Gill Primary: Gill won the toss, batting first scoring 81 all out in the 25th over. Noa Cilliers 3/5 in 3.4 overs and Bret Amsterdam 3/21 in 5 overs. UHS passed Gill's score in the 18th over. Noa Cilliers scored 37 not out. James Duthie 12, Gregan Jenneke 10. Result UHS won by 1 wicket. U/13A vs Gill Primary: Gill won the toss & elected to bat - bowled out for 64. UHS best bowlers were Sinto Nkosinkulu 4/20 & Matthew Broeksma 3/20. UHS started well & were 45/1 at one stage, but reckless batting allowed Gill to bowl them out for 56. UHS lost by 8 runs. |

| 9 Feb | Senior Cricket U/15 A vs HVS (25 Overs): Union Batted first scoring 114/7 in 24.4 overs. Best batsmen Damian Koeberg 27 and Carlton Malaya 21. HVS then went in to bat scoring 80/10. Best bowlers were Carlton Malaya 6/9 and Breyan Davids 2/10. UHS won by 34 runs. |

| 11 Feb | Senior Cricket UHS 1st XI vs Graeme College (captains declaration match): UHS lost the toss and were sent in to bat first. A lack of concentration and poor batting led to UHS being bowled out for 84 runs. best batsman was David Olivier who scored 44 runs. Graeme then went in to bat and passed the score with just 5 wickets down. best bowler was Dean Marais - Marais who took 3 for 21 in 11 overs. UHS lost the game by 5 wickets. U15A vs Graeme College: Graeme College won the toss and elected to bat first. UHS applied good pressure in the opening overs, but the boys lack of concentration cost them dearly as they missed opportunities to dismiss the only Graeme batsman that looked at all comfortable against our bowlers. Keegan Vierra went on to score an unbeaten 116 for Graeme, extras being the second highest score on 30. UHS started slowly, but good partnerships between J Crankshaw and B Davids 31 (4th wicket) T Naude and C Malaya 61 (for the 9th wicket ), put UHS in a good position to win the match. With 10 overs to go Union were well placed on 136/6. Unfortunately T Naude and C Malaya then perished and that left the tail enders with to much to do. UHS were eventually all out for 148. UHS lost the match by 45 runs. Senior Tennis Congratulations to the top 12 tennis girls who defeated Girls High School from Queenstown by 11 matches to 1. Quite a few tie-breakers were played through the day and our girls showed determination by winning all those matches. |

| 14 Feb | Junior Cricket U13A vs Gill: Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. Gill was bowled all out for 64 runs. A better fielding performance by the boys, but still allowed Gill to many extras. Best bowlers were S. Nkosinkulu 4/20 and M. Broeksma 3/20. UHS started of well with the bat and were 45/1. reckless batting allowed Gill to bowl us out for 56. UHS lost the game by 8 runs U11A vs Gill: Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. Gill was bowled all out for 81 runs. Best bowlers were N. Cilliers 3/5 in 3,4 overs and B. Amsterdam 3/21 in 5 overs. UHS managed to pass the score in the 18th over. best batsmen were N. Cilliers 37 not out, J. Duthie 12. UHS won the game by 1 wicket. |

| 15 Feb | Junior Cricket U/13A vs LVS: UHS won the toss and elected to bat. A brilliant batting display by Wiegard Brummer steered UHS to a massive total of 133 in 25 overs. Best batsman was Wiegard Brummer on 64. UHS fielding was not up to standard, but the total of 133 proved to be too much for Volkskool to chase down. UHS won the match by 38 runs. Best Bowler: Matthew Broeksma 3/16. U/11A vs LVS: UHS batted first scoring 46 all out in the 21st over- Cearwyn Spence top scoring on 9. LVS then went in to bat and were 21 all out in 11 overs. Bret Amsterdam 3/3 in 3 overs Bowen Langmead 2/2 in 3 overs; Mike Krige 2/2 in 3 overs; Accurate swing bowling and 2 run outs were seen in the game. Union won by 25 runs. Well done boys!! Inter-schools Swimming Gala Congratulations to all our swimmers who competed at the Inter-schools Gala on Wednesday 15 Feb. Special congratulations to our Senior Girls Team who won the overall Girls High School trophy. We were very proud of Jessica Charles who broke 2 records. Junior Results The annual Karoo Inter Schools gala held on Wednesday was won by Volkskool, followed by Union, Gill were in 3rd and Cradock 4th. The following Union swimmers did very well to gain places: Elizabeth Murray: 4 x 1st places with 3 new records and 1 x 3rd place Paige Hyland: 1 x 1st place, 1 x 2nd place and 2 x 3rd places Kabelo Tala: 3 x 1st places, 1 x 2nd place and 1 x 3rd place. Johan Vorster: 1 x 1st place. Sage Strydom: 1 x 2nd place and 2 x 3rd places Megan Doyle: 1 x 3rd place The U/14 boys relay team won both the Medley and Freestyle relays. The U/14 Girls relay team went one better to win both relays in record time. Well done to all our boys and girls. |

| 17 Feb | Senior Tennis On Friday the top 12 tennis girls played a match against Framesby in PE. Well done to the girls who won the match by 12 games to 6. In an excellent match Jessica Charles unfortunately lost against a SA ranked player. In an outstanding match Donnae Broeksma beat her opponent by 8 games to 2. In the top 8 Imke Marais, Migne Smith and Kayla Hobson won both their singles and doubles matches. Junior Cricket Muir won the toss and put UHS into bat first. UHS lost two quick wickets without scoring a run in the first over. In a 160 run partnership in 25 overs Luke McNaughton made 125 runs from 126 balls hitting 1 six and 22 fours batting for 37 overs. Noa Cilliers made 57 in 75 balls hitting 10 fours and 1 six. James Duthie made 10 runs from 36 balls. UHS 226/8 in their 40 overs. Muir were bowled out for 76. Luke McNaughton 2/5 in 6 overs, Bowen Langmead 2/1 in 3 overs. UHS won the match by 150 runs. Luke McNaughton was a worthy man of the match. |

| 21 Feb | Junior Tennis Our Junior Boys were beaten convincingly by a polished Volkskool team. Our players could not match their opponents' determination and superior skill. However, the girls need to be congratulated on a fine win. They played very good tennis and this coupled with grit and determination ensured that they won their encounter by 5 matches to 4. Special mention must be made of Kelsey Minnaar who won her singles against a tough opponent. |

| 22 Feb | Tennis - EPCD The Eastern Province Country District tennis players Donnae Broeksma, Charlette Rubidge, Michaela Harris and Kayla Hobson did themselves and the school proud. They contributed well towards EPCD beating the Albany team in Cradock. Junior Cricket vs Nico Brummer U11A vs Nico Brummer: Nico Brummer won the toss and put UHS into bat in a 25 over game. UHS scored 141/4 in their 25 overs L. McNaughton 41, C. Spence 25 and B. Amsterdam 21. Nico Brummer only managed to score 80/4 in their 25 overs. best bowlers were W. Keyster 1/6 in 3 overs, C. Spence 1/6 in 3 overs and B. Langmead 1/11 in 4 overs. UHS won the game by 61 runs U13A vs Nico Brummer: UHS won the toss and elected to bat. Good batting all-round gave UHS a good total of 133 in their 25 overs. Best batsman were M. Harpur 22 and W. Brummer 28. UHS bowled well and dismissed Nco Brummer for 59 runs. Best Bowler was S. Thibane 4/23. UHS won the match by 64 runs. |

| 23-24 Feb | Senior Netball On Friday afternoon and again very early on Saturday morning, 10 girls left for Middelburg to attend the annual SPAR netball development clinic. There was much laughter, but we learnt so much. The girls must be commended for the way they conducted themselves and their enthusiasm. Thanks to Mrs Rose Innes for driving the girls and Mrs van Wyk for accompanying them to this valuable clinic. Senior Hockey On Friday and Saturday, 24 of our hockey girls attended a coaching clinic run by Jeanette and Michelle Makkie on the Union Astro. Jeanette having previously coached SA U/19 and U/21 sides, shared valuable insights with the girls. Michelle, her daughter, represented SA at U/19 level and spoke to the girls about the importance of mental preparation before any game. Five very keen goal keepers were coached by Chris Rembe on Saturday. Chris is the EP men's goal keeper and a well known goalie coach. All the girls learnt a lot and look forward to building on the foundation that has been laid. |

However UHS bowled & fielded well, eventually only loosing the match by 2 wickets. Best Bowler: S Thibane 4 - 16. U/11 A 20/20 match: Union was put in to bat scoring 141/3. Luke McNaughton 42 from 36 balls, Caerwyn Spence 22, Bowen Langmead 17 n/o, James Duthie 17 and Bret Amsterdam 12 n/o. St Andrews was bowled out in the 19th over for 73 runs: Bowen Langmead 3/3 and 2 catches; Bret Amsterdam 2/6; Caerwyn Spence 2/5. Union won by 68 runs - Man of the match Luke McNaughton. |

| 24 Feb | Junior Swimming Last Friday UHS was represented at the Primary Schools Relay Gala in the U13 Girls section. They swam in 4 relay races finding 4th out of the 8 schools competing. The team consisted of Elizabeth Murray, Paige Hyland, Amy Charles and D'Neil Van Den Berg. They all recieved ribbons. |

| 25 Feb | Senior Cricket vs Muir College UHS 1st XI played a captains declaration match against Muir College in Uitenhage. Union batted first scoring 138 runs all out. Best Batsman was Nathan Naude on 75 and Dean Marais on 10. Muir managed to pass this score after 38 overs with only 4 wickets down. BEST BOWLERS were: Dean Marais 3/31; Nathan Naude 1/22. UHS lost the match by 6 wickets UHS 2nd's vs Muir College: UHS won the toss and chose to bat first, struggling over the first 2 overs and loosing 3 successive wickets. Harris Pullen batted well scoring 13 and Vuyisani Mrubata score 19 not out. Total runs tally 70 all out. Muir passed our score with only 1 wicket down. Result Union lost by 9 wickets U/15 vs Muir College: Muir batted first scoring 127/10. Breyan Davids 4/28 and Damian Koberg 2/10. Union then went in to bat scoring 128/8. Breyan Davids 40 and Carlton Malaya 37. UHS won by 2 wickets. Junior Cricket vs St Andrews, Bloemfontein U/13 A: UHS lost the toss and St Andrews elected to bat first. UHS bowled and fielded well and restricted St Andrews to 113 in 35 overs. Best Bowler Terrence Siyaya 3/15 and Sinombongo Thibane 2/12. UHS was unfortunately bowled out for just 60 runs and lost the match by 53 runs. Best Batsmen: Matt Harpur 26. U/11 A: On Saturday the boys won the toss and elected to bat scoring 182/7 in 35 overs. Bowen Langmead 40, Caerwyn Spence 28, Luke McNaughton 19 and Bladen Jacobs 16 n/o. St Andrews were bowled out for 73 in 20 overs. Luke McNaughton 5/10 in 5 overs; Bladen Jacobs 2/12; Caerwyn Spence 1/20 & taking 2 catches; James Duthie and Bowen Langmead each took 1 wicket. Union won by 108 runs. Man of the Match - Luke McNaughton 5/10 Junior Athletics 6 Junior UHS athletes represented the Karoo team at a meeting held in Graaff Reinet. The following did well to recieve medals: Gragan Jenneke - Bronze U11 Shot Put Sage Strydom - Bronze U12 Long Jump Mike Krige - Silver U11 Shot Put Kelsey Minnaar - Gold U13 Long Jump Mike and Kelsey have been included in the Cacadu team to participate in a meeting in Umthatha next weekend. |

| 27 Feb | Junior Tennis the UHS 2nd junior tennis teams (boys and girls) played against Laer Volkskool on 27th February. Both teams lost but certainly put up a good fight. Noa Cilliers, Jenna McNaughton and Rebecca Langmead played particularly well. UHS 1st team (boys and girls) played against Cradock on the 28th of February. Once again we were beaten but coaches were impressed by the general improvement of the players. Kelsey Minnaar and Kerrin Kingwill deserve special mention for their fine performance. |

| 3 Mar | Senior Tennis - Girls On Friday the top 8 Tennis Girls took part in the clover Sports day in Bloemfontein. Tennis teams were devided into an A and B section. In each section 7 schools played against each other. The top 4 girls Donnae, Jessica, Charlotte and Michaela had 7 wins in their section. They played against Upington High School, Gondveld High from Welkom and Diamantveld High from Kimberly. As the winners of their section they played against Noord Kaap high School in the play off for the 1st and 2nd place. They won the match in a nail biting tie-break match. The 2nd 4 girls also did us proud ending 6th out of a total of 16 schools. |

| 7 May | Senior Chess The top 12 chess players took part in an inter-schools tournament in Cradock on Monday together with 5 other teams. The relatively young team drew against Marlow A and beat Marlow B, but did not finish in the overall top positions. Mention must be of Chanzelle Heunis, playing at board 3, who won 4 out out her 5 games. |
