We asked a group of Grade 4 pupils for their views on life at Union Prep School. Excerpt of the question-and-answer session follow.

What do you think of Union?

• It's very well educated.
• It's great here.
• It's the best school in Graaff-Reinet.
• It doesn't swear.
• We didn't expect fun things here.
• Like today when we got all our maths right, we could go outside and play.

What's your teacher like?

• She's got brown hair and likes wearing long dresses with high heels.
• She's very strict but she's fun.
• Ja, like tomorrow, when it's her birthday, we're having her birthday on the lawn.
• She's very helpful with learning.
• You don't take chances with her.
• The matron's also a little strict.

So what's your best subject?

• Maths!
• Ja, Maths!
• Well, she's always top in maths and he always comes second. But we all like maths the best.
• See. We supposed to be doing English now.
• All that comprehension stuff is boring; that's why it's cool talking to you.

When you wake up in the morning, what's the first thought you have about school?

• Sport!
• Sport!
• Sport!
• I like sport the best at school but there's only one problem. I just don't know if I like rugby best, or cricket best, or swimming best.
• It's hard to decide.

Is there anything you don't like about your school? (This question prompted a thoughtful silence before the answers came unequivocally.)

• No.
• Nothing.
• Uh uh.
