Union High School’s girls gave it their all on the hockey field on Saturday, 10 May 2025.

First Team Report:
We had a shaky start to the match, Collegiate quickly took advantage of our early nerves and unforced errors, scoring 3 goals in the first chukka. In the second chukka, the girls regrouped and performed with more composure, managing Collegiate’s attacking threats. Unfortunately, a poor decision-making on defense allowed them to add another goal just before halftime.

The third chukka proved to be the most challenging, with Collegiate netting three quick goals. Despite the setback, our girls showed great resilience and continued to fight throughout the game. In the fourth chukka, we managed to limit them to just one goal and launched numerous counterattacks,  we couldn’t convert our chances. Collegiate showed exactly why they are ranked fourth in the country—they were tactically sharper, physically dominant, and mentally switched on. They simply wanted it more on the day. The match ended in a 0–9 loss—my toughest defeat to date with the first team.

Union High School’s 𝗨𝟭𝟯𝗔 hockey team put forth a truly Herculean effort, showing immense determination and grit as they battled hard to restrict a strong Collegiate Girls’ High School side to a narrow 0–2 victory.

Union High School’s junior and senior teams competed in a 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗭 competition at Collegiate Girls’ High School on Saturday morning, 10 May 2025.

With buzzing brains, quick wits and lots of laughs along the way, our teams showed fantastic spirit.

A big shoutout and well-deserved 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to the Collegiate girls who snatched the top spot – brilliant job!

𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘯-𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯

Our 𝗝𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗥𝗦 delivered both prepared and impromptu speeches to the adjudicators.

With topics ranging from Freedom to Friendship, it was a lively and engaging morning for all involved. While Collegiate claimed victory in the junior division, 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆!

This Saturday morning, 10 May 2025, Union High School’s 𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝟭𝟮 𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗦 girls brought incredible energy to the courts as they faced off against Collegiate Girls’ High School in both doubles and singles matchups.

Our girls delivered a commanding performance – emerging victorious!

Union High School’s junior and senior 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦-𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗬 teams took on Collegiate Girls’ High School in an exciting meet on Saturday morning, 10 May 2025.

𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 – 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴.

The 𝗝𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 athletes tackled a fast-paced 2km route and absolutely cleaned up the leaderboard.

𝗛𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲 led the charge with a phenomenal time of 07:47,8, just edging out 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗶𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻, who was hot on her heels at 07:48,5. 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗯𝘀 stormed in to claim third place, followed closely by 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲 and 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗵, rounding out a dominant top five. 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘄𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗮 also had a strong showing, finishing 7th and helping solidify Union’s sweep of the front of the pack.

The 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 team, facing a tougher 4km course, held their own. 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 crossed the line in 5th, closely followed by 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹 (6th) and 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗯𝘀 (7th), all showing impressive endurance and pace. 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗻 secured 9th place, with 𝗔𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲, 𝗨𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗶, 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗲 all putting in solid efforts to complete the Union lineup.

This past Saturday, Union High School’s rugby fields saw our players battle it out against a visiting Muir College Boys’ High School, Kariega in a series of home matches.

𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 – from the spirited effort of our youngest u/11s to the nail-biting finale of the 1st XV’s narrow 30–31 encounter, our boys gave their all on the field.

1st XV Match report

The Union side got off to a brilliant start by scoring in the first minutes of the game through a try by Shaakir Kazi. Not long after the first Union try, Muir scored a try through poor defense from the Union side. Quick thinking from scrumhalf Makukhanye de Beer lead to his name being put on the scoreboard and allowed Union to take the lead again, score now was 12-5. A lapse in concentration once again allowed Muir College to score a try. A try by Similo Mvandaba once again extended Union’s lead to 17-10. The Union boys struggled to secure the kick off from the try scored, allowing Muir College to get into our half and regaining possession which eventually lead to them scoring once again, the score now was 17-17. A penalty kick through Makukhanye de Beer allowed Union to take the lead by 20-17 going into the half-time break. 

Muir scored to quick tries at the start of the second half, immediately putting the Union boys under tremendous pressure and we were now behind by 11 points. A try by Yaaseen Kazi middle second half gave the boys some confidence and this lead us to fighting right up until the end of the game, scoring a try by Liso Booi, the conversion was unfortunately missed and this gave the victory to Muir College by 30-31.

The results were as follows: u/11A lost 0–12, u/11B lost 26–42, 𝘂𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝘄𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝟯𝟴–𝟯𝟲, u/13B lost 14–38, u/14 lost 7–17, u/15 lost 20–33, u/16 lost 15–45, the 2nd XV lost 17–35 and the 1st team delivered an intense game, narrowly losing 30–31

Our hockey teams delivered a dominant set of performances against Cradock High School.

The U16B side set the tone for the afternoon with a confident 4-0 win. Their control and discipline throughout the match ensured a comfortable victory.

Our 2nd team followed with an equally impressive display, also winning 4-0.

The First Team was simply outstanding, putting on a clinical performance to secure a 8-0 victory. The quality of the goals scored was a highlight – composed finishes, creative build-up play . Beyond the goals, the team’s ability to retain possession and transition the ball smoothly across all lines was a testament to their maturity and teamwork. Each player contributed to a complete performance that balanced flair and structure with great effect.

Well done to all our players and coaches for a superb set of results and for representing the school with pride.

The Union Schools’ 𝗝𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗥𝗨𝗚𝗕𝗬 teams took to the field on Wednesday afternoon, 7 May 2025 in a spirited set of home fixtures against Karel Theron Primêre Skool/Primary School.

It was a proud day for our young boys, with the u/7A team securing a confident 15-0 victory, while the u/7B side gave it their all in a tough 5-20 contest.

The u/9A team impressed with a solid 19-10 win and the u/11A boys showed great determination to edge out their opponents 15-10.

Rounding off the afternoon with flair, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟱𝟮-𝟳.

Congratulations to Grade 7 learner 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻 on excellent results achieved at his very first archery competition, hosted on Saturday, 26 April, by Hoër Volkskool.

Mason managed to claim a bronze medal in the competition’s primary schools section for boys while competing against archers from Graaff-Reinet, Kariega, Despatch and Jeffreys Bay.
