13th Mica Cricket Festival

From 3-5 January our 1st XI participated in the 13th Annual Mica UHS Cricket Festival.

In spite of it being so early in the year, the teams played with great enthusiasm and in great spirit, which made for a very enjoyable week of cricket.

We started the week with a declaration match against Daniel Pienaar who won the toss and elected to bat. UHS started off with some wonderful disciplined bowling and never allowed the opposition to score freely. A magnificent individual performance with the ball from Brett Amsterdam helped restrict and bowl Daniel Pienaar out for 187. Bowling figures: Brett Amsterdam 6 for 32, Luke McNaughton 2 for 27, Caerwyn Spence 2 for 53.

UHS went in to bat and through an outstanding mature innings by Jaden Brotherton, who held the innings together allowing his team mates to bat around him, we managed to pass the target with 8 wickets down. Union won the match by 2 wickets.  Batting performance: Jaden Brotherton 113 n.o., Kyle-Luke Du Preez 20, Luke Mc Naughton 19.

In an exciting declaration match against Daniel Pienaar, Union achieved a first innings win by passing the set target of 198 in the final over. Congratulations to Jaden Brotherton who made 114 not out and Brett Amsterdam who took 6 wickets!

On Friday a 50over match was played against Queen’s College and on the back of a fine batting performance UHS won the toss and elected to bat first. Unfortunately, we were unable to carry on where we left off and struggled against good accurate bowling and were bowled out for 91.  Batting performance: Luke McNaughton 20, Zusakhe Ngwane 18.  Queen’s were able to reach their target with 3 wickets down.  Union lost the match by 7 wickets.  Bowling figures: Luke Mc Naughton 1 for 20, Brett Amsterdam 1 for 18.

On the Saturday we played a T20 match against Despatch. UHS won the toss and elected to bowl. We started off with a bang taking a wicket with the first ball through a magnificent diving catch which set the tone for a wonderful bowling and fielding performance and restricted Despatch to 115. Bowling figures: Luke McNaughton 2 for 10, James Pienaar 2  for 15, Caerwyn Spence 2 for 20.

Union came in to bat and managed to keep a good steady run rate in pursuit of their target, including a wonderful 50-run partnership between Brett Amsterdam and Bowen Langmead. Unfortunately, we were unable to take advantage of this good start and ended up short of our target. UHS lost the match by 9 runs.  Batting performances: Brett Amsterdam 34, Bowen Langmead 32.

B-Age Group Gala

A large number of Union swimmers travelled to Port Elizabeth this weekend (17 November) to participate in their final B-Age Group gala for this year. The event proved to be a great outlet from the stresses of exam time and many of our swimmers managed to post new personal best times in numerous events; in particular the 100m freestyle.

Well done to all these swimmers, who have continued to train hard throughout the exam period and have been rewarded for their efforts. Union High placed 9th overall out of more than 40 schools, and in the senior section our boys placed 3rd and our girls finished in 4th place.

Biathlon

The 4th EP league event was hosted by Volkskool this weekend (10 November) in true Karoo style.  With music playing, temperatures soaring and the smell of kudo burgers and lamb sosaties wafting over the track and pool, it was a splendid event in all respects and was definitely enjoyed by spectators and competitors alike.  Special mention must be made of the organisers and the awesome Union and Volkskool mums who got stuck in behind the scenes to contribute the ultimate success of the day.

Due to this event being hosted in our back yard, Union was fortunate to be able to field a larger than usual team, despite it being held in the middle of final exams. Well done especially to all the first-timers who overcame their nerves and participated with great enjoyment and produced some wonderful results.  Congratulations must go to Mrs Hanli Rose-Innes (running) and her husband, Rowan (swimming) who took part in the fun relay event and held the Union name high!  Well done to the relay team of Kendall Krige, Drew Dobinson and Bowen Langmead who came 2nd in the Senior relay event with an extremely competitive performance.

It is always particularly impressive to watch our regular athletes focusing to keep pushing themselves to better their times at every outing and this event was no different, with almost every single one of our athletes improving their personal bests in one or both of the disciplines. It was also wonderful to welcome seven newcomers to this exciting sport and we hope that these athletes have been bitten by the biathlon bug, and will continue to compete and represent Union on a regular basis.

Junior Tennis

Our top four girls and boys represented Union in the annual Jocelyn Marais Invitational Tennis Tournament organised by MatchPoint Tennis on Friday and Saturday.

Although we played against very strong teams, our players rose to the challenge and played very good tennis. It was a great experience and the players certainly benefitted from exposure to tennis of such a high standard.

Well done to all the players on an excellent tournament. Our girls ended in fifth place and the boys seventh.

C Age Group Gala

Union went to the C Age Group Gala in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. Our six swimmers bravely took on the cold water. There were 190 swimmers in total.

Zara Deysel-Douman came 8th in Backstroke and 9th in Freestyle. Anna-May Hayes came 6th in Backstroke, 8th in Breaststroke and 10th in Freestyle. Angus McLaggen came 3rd in Backstroke, 4th in Breaststroke and 3rd in Freestyle.

Well done to all the swimmers.

Junior Cricket vs Westering

This weekend our u13 cricket boys played their last two matches of the season against Westering Primary from Port Elizabeth.

Friday (T20)

After winning the toss we selected to bat first against a strong bowling attack. Our batsmen did well under pressure, but struggled to get runs on the board ending our innings on 63/7. Unfortunately our bowlers could not restrict Westering and they chased down out score with 8 wickets in hand.

Saturday (50 overs)

On Saturday we were asked to bowl first and even though this was one of our best bowling and fielding displays all year, Westering managed to score 327 in their 50 overs. Our batsmen did their best in unfavourable conditions, but could only reach 67 all out, losing with 260 runs.

Jnr Cricket vs Gill Primary

On Tuesday our u13 cricket team played a T20 match against Gill Primary in Somerset East. We were asked to bowl first and struggled to hit our target, allowing Gill to reach 129 runs in 20 overs. Our batsmen replied with a disciplined run chase constantly rotating the strike and putting away the bad deliveries, helping us to reach our target with 4 overs to spare.
Union won by 7 wickets.

Interschools Athletics vs HVS

The 16th Interschools Athletics Meeting against Hoёr Volkskool, was held on Wednesday, 17 October at Hoёr Volkskool. It was a cool, windy afternoon, but that did not stop the Union team of taking part in big numbers and breaking quite a few records.

Union received 17 first places, 24 second places and 26 third places. First places were awarded to the following learners:

O Ngwenya 100 m Boys u15 11,51 s

N Ngongama 200 m Boys u15 23,39 s

The u19 boys, 100 m race was a nerve wrecking race with Soyama Mbobi in a very close second place.

The Union Team, however, stole the lime light, with winning the final event of the day, the u19 boys 4x 100 m relay. It is a race that will be remembered in the years to come!

All the athletes must be congratulated on their good performance, participation and sportsmanship. There is still just “One team, one Union”….

B-Age Group Gala – 27 October 2018

Union attended the first B-Age gala of the swimming season on Saturday
27 October, with 15 swimmers competing. Even though the gala occurred
much sooner in the term than usual, our swimmers did very well by
recording good times for the start of the season. It was great to see so
many entries and we’re hoping even more senior swimmers will compete as
the season progresses, so that we can be well represented at the Top 8
Gala next year.
