1st XV Match Report: UHS won 25-19
The Union 1st XV came out firing, with Siba Mbutye opening the scoring with a try to give the home side an early 5-point lead. The momentum continued as Janathen van den Berg crossed the try line to stretch Unionโs advantage to 10-0.
However, Woodridge fought back with an intercept try, narrowing the gap to 10-7 and putting pressure back on Union. Just before halftime, Van den Berg made his presence felt again, scoring his second try of the day to restore Union’s dominance. The hosts went into the break with a solid 17-7 lead.
Union started the second half strongly, with Yonela Wana finishing off a well-constructed try created by the hard work of the forwards, pushing the score to 22-7. But Woodridge was not done yet. Missed tackles and lapses in discipline allowed the visitors to score, bringing the score to 22-12 and keeping the match alive.
Union responded with a successful penalty conversion, extending their lead to 25-12. In the final minutes, Woodridge earned a penalty try to make it 25-19, but Union held firm in the closing moments to secure a well-deserved victory.
A thrilling encounter ended with Union High School emerging as the victors, 25-19 โ a result that will surely be remembered with pride.

First Team Match Report: Won 2โ0
This past Saturday, Union High Schools 1st team hockey girls claimed a 2-0 victory over Woodridge College on home turf.
Despite a slow start, the team found their rhythm and fought hard to turn the game around. ๐ ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐๐ต๐ฎ opened the scoring with a sharp front stick finish from a short corner, followed by a brilliant counter-attack goal beautifully slotted in by ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ต๐ฎ ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ป.

The girls produced a commanding performance against VGHS, dominating possession and dictating the pace of the game from start. Their passing, movement off the ball and work rate were excellent. Although they created numerous scoring opportunities. The final 3โ0 score line did not reflect the full extent of their dominance. Defensively, they remained composed and disciplined, rarely allowing VGHS into threatening positions.
Player of the match (Friday): Aaminah Steele โ for her energy and control in the final third.
In a tightly contested but well-controlled encounter, the girls once again showed their class and tactical discipline to secure a 1โ0 win. From the first start they put Kingswood under pressure, winning possession in key areas and creating chances through well-structured attacking play. The goal came from a brilliant turnover in the midfield. This led to a short corner, which was converted by Tara Ferreira (with a beautiful, well executed drag flick goal).
Player of the Match (Saturday): Nadine Murray โ for her work rate, intelligent positioning and ability to turn opposition over.
Player of the Weekend : Abonai Matushe for keeping two clean sheets this weekend.

Union High Schoolโs 1st XV Narrowly Defeated in Thrilling Encounter Against Andrew Rabie Hoรซrskool.
Union High Schoolโs 1st XV rugby team put on a valiant display in a closely contested match against Andrew Rabie Hoรซrskool from Gqeberha, ultimately falling short with a final score of 21โ29.
The game kicked off with Union immediately applying pressure by sending the opening kick deep into the oppositionโs 22m area. However, early handling errors and missed tackles allowed Andrew Rabie to gain the upper hand. They capitalized on Unionโs inability to control the ball in contact, crossing the try line twiceโconverting one of those triesโto take a 0โ12 lead.
Despite showing signs of promise late in the first half with a strong attacking phase in the opposition’s 22, Unionโs efforts were cut short when an intercepted pass led to another Andrew Rabie try. The teams went into the halftime break with Union trailing 0โ22.
The second half began in similar fashion, with Andrew Rabie scoring yet again to extend their lead to 0โ29, seemingly putting the match out of reach. However, the Union boys dug deep and showed tremendous heart, launching a spirited comeback.
Tries from Siba Mbutye, Yaaseen Kazi (Union’s leading try scorer for the season), and Jayden Odendaal, who dotted down right at the final whistle, brought the home side within reach of a dramatic comeback. Despite the late surge, time ran out and Union fell just short with the final score standing at 21โ29.
While the result didnโt go their way, the Union 1st XV can be proud of their second-half fightback and the character shown on the field. The experience will no doubt serve as valuable preparation for the matches to come.
