Senior Rugby vs Hoรซrskool Swellendam and Asherville Secondary

On Tuesday afternoon, 24 June, Union High Schoolโ€™s senior ๐—ฅ๐—จ๐—š๐—•๐—ฌ sides took to the field in a series of matches against Hoรซrskool Swellendam and Asherville Secondary.

The ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฐ๐—” and ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฑ๐—” teams both secured solid victories over Asherville, with scores of 21โ€“0 and 10โ€“0 respectively. The ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฒ๐—” team went down 19-32 in a well-contested match. Our ๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ซ๐—ฉ came up against Ashervilleโ€™s 1st team and, though the scoreboard reflected a 0โ€“24 result, the team showed resilience and heart throughout.

The ๐Ÿญ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ซ๐—ฉ capped off the afternoon with a 76โ€“0 win over Hoรซrskool Swellendam.

Union High Schoolโ€™s 1st XV delivered an emphatic performance against Hoรซrskool Swellendam, securing a 76-0 win in a one-sided encounter that showcased teamwork, versatility, and flair.

The boys in white got off to a flying start, with Elvandre Meyerโ€”playing at flank instead of what has become his usual inside centre roleโ€”scoring the opening try in just the 4th minute. Yaaseen Kazi followed up shortly with a powerful maul try, and further tries from Yonela Wana and Peter-Daniel Clegg pushed the lead to 24-0.

A sharp break by captain Kyle Liebenberg set up Siba Mbutye, who had switched from wing to centre, for another five-pointer. Wana added his second soon after following slick interplay between Meyer and Makukhanye de Beer. Despite some missed opportunities before the break due to handling errors, Union managed to add two more triesโ€”one from Liebenberg and another from Kazi, bringing his tally to two. Union entered halftime with a commanding 48-0 lead. The second half began slower on the scoreboard but not in intensity. Eventually, Trystan Hulleman crossed over to score his first try for the 1st XV in his second year with the team. Athi Mahlati, Unionโ€™s hardworking loosehead prop, earned a well-deserved try, followed by Tafadzwa Munzvenga, who powered through the midfield after a brilliant break. Similo Mvandaba capped off the dayโ€™s scoring, sealing a 76-0 win in a match that underlined Unionโ€™s depth and cohesion.

Farewell To Mrs Rose-Innes

Earlier this year, Union High School bid a heartfelt and bittersweet farewell to one of its most beloved educators, ๐— ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—น๐—ถ ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ-๐—œ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€, who went on early retirement after celebrating her 15th remarkable year at Union.

In fact, tea was such a part of her identity that she once gave a now-famous devotion on how to drink tea – one that left everyone smiling and perhaps looking at their teacups with a little more reverence. She brought this same heart and thoughtfulness to her roles beyond the classroom, whether it was as a speaker at the schoolโ€™s Mother & Daughter Tea or the ever-gracious organiser of the annual Grade 7 Ladiesโ€™ Tea.

Her colleagues remember her not just for her professionalism, but for her deep care. Feeling unwell? Mrs Rose-Innes always had a trusty boere remedy at the ready. Need a smile? A warm chat with her did the trick. She had a way of making everyone feel special – and that, perhaps, is what weโ€™ll miss the most.

Mrs Hanli Rose-Innes was more than an educator; she was the life, heart and soul of Union in so many ways. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, learning and love – and a void that cannot easily be filled.
