What a scorcher of a day – but what a fantastic one, too!
The annual ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ข๐ฅ ๐๐ก๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐๐ข๐ข๐๐ฆ ๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฆ ๐๐๐ฌ between the Union Schools and Laer Volkskool was held this afternoon and we’re proud to say that despite the heat, our young athletes truly gave it their all from start to finish.
The past weekend saw Union High School’s u11A and u13A cricket teams take on Woodridge College & Preparatory School in a series of fixtures.
In the ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ T20 match on Friday, Union batted first to post 76/6 in their 20 overs, with steady contributions from ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป (15), ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐๐ต (14) ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฒ๐น ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ (11). Despite Woodridge chasing down the target to win by seven wickets, Unionโs bowlers – ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐ฑ, ๐๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ธ and ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ผ ๐ก๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป – each claimed a wicket, showing a lot of grit throughout.
Saturdayโs 25-over encounter saw Union win the toss and bat again, but Woodridgeโs disciplined bowling restricted them to 60 all out (25.2 overs). The ๐๐ญ๐ฏ๐ side produced an exciting T20 match, batting first to reach 69 runs. In the 40-over clash, Woodridge posted a strong 216/7, with ๐๐ผ๐๐ต ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐๐ถ๐น๐น once again impressing, taking 3-37. Unionโs reply of 82 all out included a solid 31 from Kingwill and 20 from ๐ก๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฝ๐, but it wasnโt enough to chase down the total.

Recently, unfazed by the blazing Karoo sun, seven Scouts from the ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ณ-๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฝ and two adult leaders gathered bright and early at the Chookie Geard Scout Hall – hats on, water bottles filled, spirits high and ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐บ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ต๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ข ๐ฅ๐ข๐บ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ช๐ด๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฉ ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐ข๐ณ๐ฅ ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฌ.
With a troop full of new, eager faces, ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ ๐๐ธ๐ถ๐น๐น๐. From knot work and pioneering to building a mock campsite that looked straight out of a survival guide, the Scouts threw themselves into every task. Each activity became a lesson – not just about Scouting, but about teamwork, problem-solving and leadership.

Of course, not everything went perfectly – a few wobbly lashings here, a tent that didnโt quite stand there – but thatโs what Scouting is all about. ๐ฌ๐ผ๐ ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป, ๐๐ผ๐ ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ด๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ.
