1st Team – Gregg Beiling Festival
Union’s 1st XI hockey girls participated in the 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗚 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 in East London this past weekend.

On Friday they played their first match against Eldoraigne High School, which saw Union lose 2 – 1.

On Saturday they played two matches. The first was against a Top 10 side, Collegiate High School, which saw the girls go down 1 – 6. A couple of hours later, Union played against Merifield College, drawing the match 2 – 2.

Their last encounter of the festival on Sunday, saw Union conclude their weekend with a 1-all draw against Sasolburg High School.

We would like to thank coach Calvin Beck  for looking after our girls, as well as the parents who supported the girls throughout the weekend.

U/16A team: Pearson Festival
Pearson High School hosted their annual u/16 Girls’ 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 this past weekend in Gqeberha.

The Union u/16A side, accompanied by new coach Arijana Botha, played well and with great energy throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, 18 March, Union took on Saint Andrew’s School on home soil in an annual derby day that has become a 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧, eagerly awaited by both schools.

As expected, the day started with a bang, with all matches being played at a furious pace, with teams from both sides attacking and defending with everything they had.

Aggressive attacking and big hits in defence saw our senior teams enjoying more success than the juniors. Congratulations to the u/15As and 2^nd XVs on their victories.

Union’s 𝟭𝗦𝗧 𝗫𝗩 put on a brilliant performance to beat the Saints 18 – 8, ending the day off on a high note for Union.

The Union side played with the wind in the first half and, although they had numerous opportunities to cross over the try line, they were unable to do so until a moment of stellar play secured Union a lead of 5 – 0.  St Andrew’s however followed this up with a try against the run of play, followed up by a penalty, giving them a 8 – 5 lead going into half-time.

Union looked a better team in the second half, controlling possession and territory which eventually resulted in them scoring their second try, to take the lead by 13 – 8. A penalty in favour of Union, secured them the win with 18 points to Saint Andrew’s 8.

Union’s senior rugby teams enjoyed an afternoon of rugby against Graaff-Reinet’s Spandau Secondary School

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to the Union boys, on a stellar effort all round in uncomfortably hot conditions.

The senior third team won 17 – 11, the u/14As won 41 – 0, the u/15As won 19-7 and the u/16As (𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦) won 36-7.

𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘶 𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘣𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰𝘰𝘯.

The hosting team made full use of their home ground advantage when they took the field against Union’s 𝟭𝗦𝗧 𝗫𝗩 at the annual Hoërskool Despatch Sports Day earlier this afternoon, Saturday, 11 March.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙤𝙮𝙨 𝙥𝙪𝙩 𝙪𝙥 𝙖 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩 against a strong Despatch outfit (and a blustery wind) in the last match of the day, but in the end, it was the Despatch team who claimed the victory with 15 points to Union’s 3.

On Saturday, 11 March, Union’s 1st hockey team travel to Gqeberha to participate in the annual 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 weekend.

Our team was drawn with some tough opposition, coming up against Kingswood College, Pearson High School, Victoria Girls and Alexander Road. 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘺!

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝟮𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠 traveled to Despatch today, to participate in the annual Hoërskool Despatch Sports Day.

The girls took the field against DF Malherbe, Brandwag and Despatch, respectively.

The girls lost their first encounter against DF Malherbe 2 – 0, after which they proceeded to win both their encounters against Brandwag and Despatch 1 – 0.

A bus-load of swimmers from the Union Preparatory School and Union High School, Graaff-Reinet represented the Karoo at the annual 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥-𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗦 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔 held at Merrifield College in East London on Thursday, 2 March.

The high standard of swimming at this event continues to amaze 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

As always, competition was fierce in all events – 60 in total – but the Karoo swimmers never gave in, giving their best in all their races.

The day’s climax saw all age groups racing in relays. It was an incredibly close competition and thoroughly enjoyable to watch as a spectator.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to the Karoo team who claimed second place among the competing districts with a total of 378 points and congratulations to Albany who claimed victory with 430 points.

𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚 4 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙖𝙮𝙡𝙤𝙧 𝙅𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙗𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙩 𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙪/10 50𝙢 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙 (41.66𝙨).

Our learners were also an integral part of the Karoo relay teams that did very well on the day.

Union is so 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗗 of all our swimmers who committed and gave their time to swim for their district and would like to thank them for their stellar efforts.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Grade 7 learner Zoë Mills on winning a silver medal at Swimming South Africa’s 𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟 𝟮 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗦 held in East London this past weekend, 3 to 5 March.

In addition to clocking new personal best times in all her races, Zoë claimed second place in the 200m Breaststroke in the Girls u/12 category with a time of 3:38.33 (an 11.32s improvement on her previous PB!)
