𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞, learners and staff, to the start of our third term at Union High School, Graaff-Reinet!

We hope you all had a rejuvenating break and are ready to dive back into our educational journey together.

Congratulations to Joy Merifield, a Grade 11 learner at Union High School, Graaff-Reinet, on claiming 1st place at the recent Karoo Winter Wool Festival’s 𝗢𝗩𝗞 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡.

Joy’s artistic talent has earned her a well-deserved prize of R10 000 for herself and an additional R10 000 for the school!

𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘑𝘰𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗧: horse riders flying across wintry Free State grasslands, hundreds of horses encamped with their riders, support teams and spectators gathered round fires each night to discuss the glories and tragedies of the day, and riders getting up at midnight in freezing conditions to check on their horses.

This is the legendary Fauresmith Endurance Ride – the highlight of the South African endurance horse-riding calendar – where Union High School, Graaff-Reinet Grade 9 learner 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲, is currently competing.

𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘑𝘶𝘭𝘺, 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 201𝘬𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘯, 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘩 200. Congratulations to 𝗕𝘂𝗸𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗼𝘀𝗶 𝗡𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘆𝗲, a Grade 9 learner at Union High School, Graaff-Reinet, on winning second place in the ‘High School Poetry Competition’ hosted by the HeraldLIVE – Nelson Mandela Bay to commemorate this years’ Youth Day!

Bukhobenkosi’s poetic talent nabbed her some great prizes and saw her work showcased in The Herald’s Youth Day supplement.

Union High School subsequently established the annual 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗗𝗘𝗕𝗢𝗢 𝗘𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗𝗗𝗙𝗢𝗗, which will celebrate its inaugural edition this year, as an arts development platform, offering various opportunities to young performers from age 5 to 18, in all communities for participation, development and showcasing of talents in music, dance, theatre and fine arts.

Entries have officially opened for the 2023 Camdeboo Eisteddfod! This 3-day event – 𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮, 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘨𝘦 5 𝘵𝘰 18, 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤, 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 – will be held in Graaff-Reinet on 23, 24 and 25 August.

Some of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Grade 12 were recently treated to an evening out with the doyen of African storytelling, Rob Caskie.

𝘋𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘪𝘳 𝘌𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘰𝘯’𝘴 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱, 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘺.

The Grade 12s learned much about the art of storytelling, leadership and the incredible journey that Shackleton endured.
