RCL Training Session

This past Friday, 1 March, Mr Luphumlo Joka, a distinguished Old Unionite and the head of Global Leadership Consultants, exemplified the principles of servant leadership during his visit to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet.

The message of finding one’s own voice and confidently occupying leadership roles undoubtedly inspired our young leaders. It instilled in them a strong desire to fulfill their destined potential and become the leaders they were meant to be.

Art Club

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ง ๐—–๐—Ÿ๐—จ๐—• members have been meeting twice a week this term to explore the captivating world of Art Nouveau posters and portraits.

Their main focus has been on developing the skill of gridding, which enables them to create precise and accurate reproductions of renowned artworks by artists like Toulouse Lautrec and Edward Beardsley.

Through their exploration of Art Nouveau, the club members have gained valuable insights into color mixing, the importance of drawing with the eye rather than relying solely on the brain’s perception, and the significance of achieving accuracy in their artwork.

Junior Cricket vs Summerwood

On Friday, 1 March, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s u/13A team faced off against Summerwood Primary School at the Botanics Sports Grounds.

With a collective effort from Union’s batters, they were able to accumulate a respectable total of 80 runs. The bowlers from Union displayed their brilliance, with Ryonn Naudรฉ taking 2 crucial wickets.

Union managed to post a total of 112 runs. In yet another nail-biting finish, Summerwood emerged victorious once again, this time with 6 wickets and 7 balls remaining. Murray Hope stood out as the top performer among Union’s bowlers, taking 2 important wickets.

Over the weekend, Union’s u/11A cricketers wrapped up their season with matches against a visiting Summerwood Primary School.

In the Pro20 match on Friday, Summerwood won the toss and chose to bat first. Union’s bowling performance was exceptional, displaying discipline and making it challenging for the opposing batsmen to score runs. Edwin Holmes emerged as the top scorer, contributing 36 runs off 28 balls and was awarded the Man of the Match. Union secured victory with 5 wickets in hand.

In the 30-over match on Saturday, Union won the toss and elected to bat first. While all the batsmen showed promise, a lack of concentration led to their downfall, resulting in the loss of wickets. Edwin Holmes made a valiant effort but struggled as wickets fell around him. Union was bowled out for a total of 49 runs. Despite the low target, Union’s bowlers gave their best to defend it. Edwin Holmes, Uthmaan Steele and Sintayu Kaitro each took two wickets. However, Summerwood managed to secure a victory by 4 wickets.

Senior Hockey vs Pearson

On Monday, 2 March, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet hosted Gqeberhaโ€™s Hoรซrskool Pearson High School for a very competitive hockey fixture.

The afternoon kicked off in blustery weather conditions with the u/14A and u/16A matches, setting the stage for an exciting showdown.

Right from the start, it was evident that the Pearson sides were determined to secure a victory. Despite their hard-fought efforts and passionate play, the u/14A team unfortunately lost 0-1, and the u/16A team faced a 0-4 defeat.
