Valedictory 2024

𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙤 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨…

Today, Friday, 11 October, was an extra special day for the matrics, their parents, special guests and Union High School’s staff, as all came together for the Class of 2024’s 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗬.

Once everyone had gathered in the school hall, Headmaster Mr William Pringle extended a warm welcome to all, after which Deputy Head Boy Josh Neill and Deputy Head Girl Sarah Wilmott led the devotion.

In response to the Headmaster’s address, Head Prefects Na’eem Mahomed and Caytah-Leigh Koeberg spoke on behalf of the class, delivering touching farewell messages.

The Class of 2024 then presented a song, ‘We Are Young’ by FUN and a slideshow of their years at the school to those gathered.

The matrics then enjoyed tea in the Tony Burrell Union, joined by their parents and the school’s staff, after which they took leave of the school by walking through a guard of honour, created by the rest of the school’s learners.

Primary Department Prizegiving

Union High School held its annual prizegiving ceremony for its Primary Department (Grade 5 to 7 learners) on Thursday morning, 10 October.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡’𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 – 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚.

Before learners were presented with different awards as per their performance and achievement, they were addressed by the departmental head of the Primary Department, Mrs Yvette Cloete.

In her address, Mrs Cloete emphasized that the prizegiving ceremony is a significant moment in which to celebrate the assiduousness and hard work of the learners across all subjects and extra-mural activities.

“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘦-𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘺, 𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴”, said Mrs Cloete.

The event also featured delightful performances by Curen Willemse who performed Dionne Warick’s ‘Walk on by’ on the piano, Kira Hector who performed ‘Tarantella in G minor’ by Glenda Austin and the school’s junior choir, who sang ‘Iko Iko’ by Small Jam and Justin Wellington.

Then came the moment that everyone had been waiting for – the presentation of awards.

Although the ceremony saw numerous awards presented to learners across all subjects and grades, the climax of the event was the presentation of the 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘅 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 which was this year awarded to Grade 7 learner, Clea Clark who received a big round of applause from her peers and all present in the hall.

The programme also comes with the additional impact of providing leadership and development opportunities to the older or near-peer youth who serve in the mentoring role.

The support of parents and teachers is undoubtedly vital for the success of our learners. However, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙙 – in fact, peer mentoring has been shown to lead to improved attitude to school, attendance and behaviour. It can also help learners to build up a peer network within their school, causing more holistic benefits such as a sense of community and belonging.
