It is with this in mind, that Union High School, Graaff-Reinet initiated its very first 𝗗𝗜𝗚𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 today, Tuesday, 2 May.

The week was kick-started with two workshops – one with the Grade 5s, followed by one with the Grade 6 learners.

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗳𝘁, 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 & 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗾𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 Screen Smarts, the workshops were fun and engaging sessions, aimed at helping our learners reflect on how their digital lives impact their social and emotional well-being and teaching them digital citizenship skills to help them make smart choices online and in life.

Topics covered with the learners included, among other, their digital footprint, online predators, cyberbullying, online privacy and finding a balance between time spent online and in real life.

Tomorrow will see the Grade 7 and 8 workshops being held.

As parents, we need to use technology to our advantage, and take back control of our children’s digital spaces.

𝗜𝗳 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘂𝘁, and you are battling to manage your child’s screen time, you have to attend this event!

➼ 𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝟱 𝗠𝗮𝘆, 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟳:𝟯𝟬, 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀’ 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗳𝘁, 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 & 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗾𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀.

In an endeavour to improve the entire digital landscape of the Union and Graaff-Reinet community for our kids, the event will be 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Topics that will be covered with parents include:

• A parent’s role: Monitoring & Mentoring

• Harmful content

• Pornography & addiction

• Online predators

• Filtering software

• Safe Gaming

• Social Media

• Sexting & Cyberbullying

• Setting boundaries & digital citizenship

• Being a digital role model

The evening forms part of a 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 that will be held at Union from 3 to 6 May, where learners will be engaged in a 4-day long interactive, fun, learning experience, during which they will be coached in managing screen time, digital life skills, cyber safety and everything else a netizen needs to know to make smart choices in cyberspace.

A raffle sheet was handed out to each learner in the Primary and Senior Departments today. We kindly request that all learners try and sell as many tickets as possible at 𝗥𝟮𝟬 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 in support of this project!

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗯𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

The festival, which is sponsored by Caltex Eastern Cape and Botha’s Garage, will see u/13A hockey and rugby teams participating in a jam-packed weekend of rugby and hockey action in the Gem of the Karoo, Graaff-Reinet.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿’𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗲.

On Thursday, 14 April, Union High School’s Interact Club relaunched their annual ‘𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴’ project.

This ongoing project will see the learners of the respective grades at Union compete to see who can make the most sandwiches in aid of this initiative.

In Thursday’s register class period, 𝟯𝟭𝟯 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 by a group of eager Grade 8 learners who supported this project by donating the required items, making the sandwiches and wrapping them up to go.

Union High School extends its 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to the Grade 8s and their register class teachers for assisting them in this endeavour.

𝘞𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳!

Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet has appointed Mr Richard Rautenbach as the new Head of Junior Sport (Grade 1 to 7), as of Monday, 25 April.

Mr Rautenbach said his primary objective is to establish an enabling environment and forge new relationships with learners, their parents, educators and coaching staff. “𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦, 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵,” he explained.

According to Union Preparatory School principal, Ms Belinda Botha, 𝗥𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹.

• Mr Rautenbach comes to Union from Grey High School in Gqeberha where he served as a sports administrator. In addition to having studied Sports Management and Development, Mr Rautenbach also has years of coaching experience in various sporting codes to recommend him.
