This past Saturday, 23 March, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learner Ben Lemke participated in the NMB Bellbuoy Challenge in Gqeberha.

𝗔𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟱, 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿’𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀.

The NMB Bellbuoy Challenge, a 5km Indian Ocean swim event, is renowned as one of the toughest ocean swims in the world. Held in the waters of Algoa Bay off Pollock Beach, this thrilling competition tests the endurance, skill and mental fortitude of its participants.

The swim to the buoy, covering a distance of 2.5km, can be relatively easy on a good day. However, the currents around the buoy can significantly impact the swim back, often doubling the time it takes to return. Moreover, the deep-sea environment adds to the challenge, as swimmers must confront the unknown beneath them, including the presence of thirty-two species of sharks.

𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟯𝟴 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟭𝟴 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵.

Ben’s performance was truly exceptional, as he secured an impressive 13th place overall, completing the challenge in an incredible time of 1 hour, 23 minutes and 38 seconds.

Ben was supported by his father, 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁, who also participated in the race and achieved a commendable 50th place overall, finishing in a time of 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 55 seconds.

Additionally, 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, a fellow Graaff-Reinetter, showcased her determination by completing the challenge in a time of 2 hours, 38 minutes and 8 seconds.

𝘉𝘦𝘯’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘔𝘉 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘣𝘶𝘰𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵. 𝘈𝘴 𝘢 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳, 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s u/16A hockey team recently had the opportunity to participate in Pearson High School’s annual 𝗨/𝟭𝟲 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 in Gqeberha.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱.

The team kicked off the festival with some tough competition, facing off against Collegiate and DSG. Although they put up a valiant effort, they unfortunately fell short in both encounters. Undeterred, they returned the next morning to take on Woodridge, but luck was not on their side as they suffered another loss.

The team’s fortunes, however, began to change as they faced Brandwag in a thrilling match that ended in a goalless draw. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵-𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺.

Determined to turn things around, the team showed great resilience and determination in their subsequent matches. Despite battling through the pouring rain, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙉𝙞𝙘𝙤 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣, 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙗𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙍𝙞𝙚𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙂𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨, with a scoreline of 2-0 in each match.

Overall, the team’s performance at the Pearson festival showcased their perseverance and ability to adapt to different playing conditions. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧-𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚-𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learners, sisters Jenelle and Shana Theron, as well as little Reece Gibbons, who participated and did exceptionally well at the recent 𝗦𝗻𝗲𝗲𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗹 𝗠𝗧𝗕 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲.

The 25km Girls’ category, saw Jenelle, a Grade 11 learner, emerging as the frontrunner, securing the 1st place position. Not far behind was Shana, a Grade 5 learner, who claimed 2nd place. Reece Gibbons, also a Grade 5 learner, secured the 3rd place spot.

In addition to winning the Girls’ category, Jenelle also secured the 1st place overall among all the competing women, while Shana and Reece claimed the 1st and 2nd spot, respectively, in the u/12 age group.

The Union High School, Graaff-Reinet u/13A hockey team returned from Bloemfontein today, after participating in the 𝗘𝗖𝗛𝗦 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 over the past four days.

On 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭, the girls got off to a great start by defeating Paarl’s Panorama Primary School u/13B side with a score of 6-0.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮 brought an exciting match against Laer Volkskool, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Union then faced off against ECHS Marco and secured a victory with a 1-0 score.

Unfortunately, the girls had a challenging game against ECHS Recta and lost by a margin of 5-0.

On 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯, the team faced another tough opponent, Paarl Gimnasium, and suffered a narrow defeat of 1-0. They followed this with a 0-0 draw against Panorama Primary School’s u/13A side.

In their final match of the tournament on 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟰, Union faced off against Panorama Primary School’s u/13A side – once again – for the 3rd and 4th place.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st hockey team who emerged as the champions of the highly-anticipated ECHS hockey tournament held in Bloemfontein this past Easter weekend.

𝘖𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 12 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴, 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘴, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.

During the 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀, they faced off against Hoërskool Heidelberg and secured an impressive 4-1 win. Although they suffered a setback with a 0-3 loss to ECHS Invitational, they showcased their resilience by holding Randburg High School to a dynamic 0-0 draw.

Moving into the 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆-𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, the Union team faced formidable opponents. Despite a challenging match against Hoërskool Hugenote resulting in a 0-2 loss, they rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Hoërskool Upington. The team continued their winning streak, defeating Potchefstroom Gimnasium 1-0 and holding the ECHS Invitational team to a gripping 0-0 draw. Their journey to the finals was sealed with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Hoërskool Transvalia.

The 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 saw the Union girls face off against Hoërskool Hugenote once again. The match ended in a nail-biting 0-0 draw, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. However, it was the Union side who ultimately emerged victorious during an exhilarating shootout, showcasing their nerves of steel and unwavering determination.

Our 1st XV wrapped up their festival with a 17-10 victory over Elspark High School from Germiston this afternoon!

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to the boys on their outstanding performance and well-deserved win. 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥!

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st hockey team delivered an outstanding performance at the school’s 35th annual 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 & 𝗛𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹, contested from 21 to 24 March.

This year’s 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 & 𝗛𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 is truly unique and special as, for the first time ever, the hockey side of the festival has adopted a tournament format.

The team began their tournament by dominating their first match against 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝟮, securing a resounding 6-0 victory. Building on their momentum, they faced off against 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀’ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 and triumphed with a commanding 5-0 win.

Undeterred by their early successes, the girls continued to excel, showcasing their skill and determination in a 9-0 victory against 𝗭𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. Their exceptional form carried them through to the next challenge, a thrilling encounter against the formidable 𝗝𝗶𝗺 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵é side. Special mention must be made of Leigh-Ann Murray and Caytah-leigh Koeberg who showed their mettle in this match.

In a hard-fought battle, Union’s 1st hockey team emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 scoreline, securing their place in the finals against 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹.

The final match proved to be a momentous occasion as the Union side delivered an exceptional performance, defeating Westering with a well-deserved 1-0 win.

The tournament saw Katelyn Trollip being hailed as the Union side’s top defender, Leigh-Ann Murray stood out as the best midfielder, captain Sadé May proved to be the most outstanding forward, while vice-captain Caytah-Leigh Koeberg was recognized as Union’s MVP, demonstrating exceptional talent throughout the competition.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Invitation hockey side enjoyed great results at Union’s 35th annual Senior Rugby & Hockey Festival.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗸𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀. They started on a high note, defeating Dirkie Uys’ 1st team with an impressive score of 3-0. However, they faced a tough challenge in their next match against the Jim Fouché 1st team, resulting in a 0-4 loss. Undeterred by their setback, the team fought valiantly against Nico Malan’s 1st team, but unfortunately fell short with a score of 1-3.

𝗢𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆-𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿. The match ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw, leading to an intense 8-second rule shoot-out. The shoot-out ended in a 2-2 tie, but Union emerged victorious in the sudden death round. Goalkeeper Zanana Speelman demonstrated exceptional skills during this nail-biting phase. Leshay Fourie, Farronique Booysen and Xarah Hoffman were the heroes of the shoot-out, executing their skills flawlessly in the 8-second time limit.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘋𝘚𝘎 2𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘮. Displaying their determination and teamwork, Union emerged triumphant with a score of 2-1. This victory secured them the 9th position overall out of the 17 participating teams.

𝘼 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝, 𝙈𝙧𝙨 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙚 𝙆𝙚𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙧. Their hard work, dedication and outstanding performance in the festival have made us immensely proud. Congratulations on a job well done!

Last week, at the start of the March school holiday, the Union Schools’ u/11A rugby team took part in the annual 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘆 & 𝗥𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 hosted by Clarendon Park Primary School in Gqeberha.

The team’s resilience was clearly evident as they bounced back from the initial loss, gaining confidence and building strong cohesion, which ultimately led to improved performances throughout the festival.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱-𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀: a challenging 29-5 loss against Clarendon, convincing wins of 14-0 against CPPS invitation and 24-7 against Summerwood, hard-fought draws of 7-7 against Herbert Hurd and 12-12 against Charlo, and a narrow, but well-deserved, 12-10 victory over Lillyfontein.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙡 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 7-𝙖-𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨, 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨.

In their first match, the Union team defeated Herbert Hurd with an impressive score of 4-0. The team continued their winning streak in the 7-a-side match against Summerwood, securing a 3-0 victory.

In a highly competitive full-field match against Westering, Union managed to secure a hard-fought draw with a score of 0-0.

𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮’𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭.

The team then faced a challenging 7-a-side match against Stirling, where they fought valiantly but unfortunately lost with a score of 2-4. In another full-field match, the Union girls faced tough competition from Hudson Park and suffered a 0-2 loss.

Continuing their full-field matches, the team faced Clarendon Park and experienced a close defeat with a score of 0-1. In the subsequent 7-a-side match against Hudson Park, Union faced a strong opponent and lost with a score of 3-1.

Despite these setbacks, the team displayed their resilience and determination in the 7-a-side match against St Georges, securing an impressive victory with a score of 10-0.

However, in their final full-field match against Stirling, the team suffered another 0-4 loss.

Ending the festival on a positive note, the team secured a well-deserved victory with a score of 3-1 in the final 7-a-side match against Clarendon Park.

Overall, participating in the Alan Lones Hockey & Rugby Festival provided the young Union side with valuable experience early in the season. The team’s performance throughout the festival demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement and highlighted areas for growth.

The past Friday, 16 March, was a day filled with excitement and determination as Union High School’s senior rugby players travelled to Makhanda to participate in the annual Graeme Day.

The u/16A team kicked off the day’s proceedings with a challenging match against Daniël Pienaar. Despite their best efforts, the Union side faced a tough defeat with a score of 36-5. However, this match served as a valuable learning experience, highlighting key areas for improvement that will undoubtedly contribute to their future success.

The main event of the day for the Union supporters featured Union’s 1st XV rugby team taking on the formidable Daniël Pienaar side.

The game started off on a promising note, with Union displaying great skill and determination in the first quarter. Unfortunately, a quick turnover by Daniël Pienaar led to their first try, setting the tone for the rest of the match. While Union had opportunities to score tries, luck was not on their side.

At halftime, the score stood at 6-19 in favour of Daniël Pienaar. Despite the wind at their backs in the second half, Union struggled to put points on the board, while their opponents continued to capitalize on their chances. The final score of the game was 6-48 in favour of Daniël Pienaar.

Although the outcome may not have been what Union High School desired, there were many positive aspects to take away from the match. The team showed great tenacity and resilience, and their performance serves as a valuable learning experience moving forward.

With a festival on the horizon this weekend, there is much anticipation and excitement for the future matches to come.
