Learners were acknowledged at this morning’s Assembly for achievements in cricket.

Josh took 𝟱 𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗦 for 19 runs in 8 overs in a match against Frans Conradie while representing the u/13A team, he then claimed another 𝟱 𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗦 in a match against Laer Volkskool.

𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗧 to junior cricketer Sintayo Kaitro who claimed 𝟱 𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗦 for 30 runs in 7 overs in a recent encounter against Herbert Herd

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to Grade 5 learner Grant Murray, who was acknowledged this morning for a recent achievement in cricket.

Grant took 𝟱 𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗦 for 11 runs in 4 overs in a match against Frans Conradie while representing the u/11A team.

In a fun showdown earlier this afternoon, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet hosted Gill Primary School for a set of junior cricket matches.

First up, it was Union’s u/11B side taking on Gill’s u/11A side. Gill won the toss and decided to bat. They made 8 runs and with the 21 wides conceded, Gill’s innings came to an end at 29 runs in 14 overs. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 emerged as Union’s standout bowler, consistently troubling the Gill batsmen.

In the second innings, Union came out with great confidence. They chased down the target of 30 runs in just 6 overs, securing a well-deserved victory.

Next up, it was Union’s u/13B side facing off against Gill’s u/13A side. Union won the toss and elected to bat. However, they faced some tough competition from Gill’s bowlers and were eventually bowled out for 44 runs in the 16th over. 𝗞𝘄𝗲𝘇𝗶 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗮 contributed 10 runs, while 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗯 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗱 added 9 runs to Union’s total.

Gill surpassed Union’s score in the 11th over, but not without some resistance from Union’s bowlers. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗺𝗻𝗮 𝗤𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼 was the star performer, taking 3 wickets for 17 runs, followed by 𝗖𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝘀𝗼𝗻 who claimed 2 wickets for 14 runs. Despite their efforts, Gill emerged victorious, winning the match by 5 wickets.

Earlier this afternoon, the Top 6 junior boys and girls of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet and Laer Volkskool converged for an exciting afternoon of tennis.

In a very close finish, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨’ 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 with a score of 5-4 against their Volkskool counterparts.

On the boys’ side, despite a valiant effort, the 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩 with a score of 7-2 against Volkskool.

This past Saturday, 24 February, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior cricketers travelled to Komani to compete against Laerskool Hangklip Primary.

In the 𝘂/𝟭𝟭𝗔 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺’𝘀 match, Union won the toss and decided to bat first.

𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯’𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘴𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮’𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 144.

Hangklip, despite losing an early wicket, managed to build a strong partnership that kept them in the game. Union’s bowlers, however, showcased patience and discipline, ultimately restricting Hangklip to 132 runs in their allotted 35 overs.

Initially, Union seemed to be in a strong position at 109-4. However, a sudden collapse saw them lose 6 wickets for just 8 runs, resulting in a total score of 117 before being bowled out.

Hangklip’s batting innings began with a fantastic start, reaching 45 runs without any loss. 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘝𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥.

Joubert Vorster showcased his exceptional form by claiming 4 wickets for 16 runs, while Aidan Ferreira contributed significantly with 5 wickets for 29 runs.

On Monday, 26 February, our Top 6 boys’ and girls’ tennis players traveled to Middelburg for an afternoon fixture against Hoërskool Middelburg.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟵-𝟱.

In the girls’ singles matches, Union dominated, winning 5 out of 6 matches. The girls’ doubles matches also went in favour of Union, with a clean sweep of 3-0.

In the boys’ singles matches, Union secured 4 victories out of 6. The boys’ doubles matches were closely contested, with Union winning 2 out of 3 matches.

Lastly, in the mixed doubles matches, Union continued their winning streak, securing a convincing victory of 5-1.

On Friday, 23 February, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s rugby boys participated in Hoër Volkskool’s 2024 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘦ë 𝘋𝘳𝘶𝘬 𝘈𝘢𝘯𝘥 – a pre-season tournament that allows rugby teams the opportunity to effectively finalise their pre-season preparations in a competitive yet relaxed and accommodating environment.

While some of our players had to sit this one out due to cricketing commitments, the rest of the boys who have been putting in the hard yards with their pre-season training, valued the opportunity to take the field again.

We extend our 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗙𝗨𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to Volkskool for inviting us to participate and giving our boys the opportunity to play. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all involved

A total of 80 swimmers represented the Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet and Union High School, Graaff-Reinet at the annual 𝗞𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗢 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔 held at Hoër Volkskool on Wednesday, 21 February.

In addition to Union’s spirited participants, teams from Gill, Cradock, Volkskool, Marlow and a group of dedicated home-schoolers showcased their skills in the pool.

The high standard of swimming at this event continues to amaze 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

As always, competition was fierce in all events – 106 in total – but Union’s swimmers never gave in, giving their best in all their races.

In the primary school category, Laer Volkskool secured victory with 408 points, while Union’s Grade 1 to 7 swimmers secured a commendable second place with 346 points. Gill, the Homeschoolers and Cradock Primary School followed closely behind.

Moving to the senior section, Union High School triumphed in the Girls’ section and secured a strong second position in the Boys’ section. Special recognition goes to 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗸𝗲 for his outstanding performance earning him the title of ‘Victor Ludorum’.

Union is 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗗 of all our swimmers who committed and gave their time to swim for their school and would like to thank them for their efforts.

Ben claimed a commendable 2nd place in the run within his age group, and placed 3rd in the swim event, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲.

As always, his representation of Union filled him with pride, and he eagerly anticipates the upcoming South African Championships in Bloemfontein in April, where he will compete as an Eastern Cape representative.
