Hoërskool Pearson High School in Gqeberha is hosting its 15th annual 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 as of today, Thursday, 7 September.

The 2023 edition will once again see 25 of the top cricket-playing schools in the province in action, including Union High School, Graaff-Reinet.

Union is already on the field in a 𝗧𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 against Westering which kicked off at 09:00 this morning. This encounter will be followed by another T20 against Muir this afternoon.

Tomorrow will see the boys facing Stirling in a 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲-𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵, while Saturday will have them take to the pitch against DF Malherbe in a 𝟱𝟬-𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵.

The Union High School, Graaff-Reinet 𝗨𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧 team enjoyed a great start to their season on Friday, 1 September, by securing a convincing T20 victory against Sonop Laerskool.

Losing the toss, Union was put in to bat and managed to score 130 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙊𝙬𝙚𝙣 𝙋𝙖𝙭𝙩𝙤𝙣, 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 67 𝙧𝙪𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙛 60 𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨. Paxton’s outstanding partnership with Joubert Vorster, which contributed 86 runs for the 5th wicket, was a key factor in Union’s success.

In the bowling department, Union displayed exceptional skills and managed to bowl out Sonop for just 69 runs, securing a 61-run victory. 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮, 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗵𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮 𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵.

On Saturday, 2 September, Union faced Sonop once again in a 40-over match. Sonop stepped in to bat first, with Union’s bowlers restricting them to a mere 103 runs all out, thanks to a stellar bowling performance led by Owen Paxton with 4 wickets and the contribution of 2 wickets by Aidan Ferreira.

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 in the 24th over, with Brett Kenmuir scoring 20 runs, Owen Paxton 21 runs, and Joubert Vorster, 25 runs.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s senior tennis players, 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹, 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝗰𝗟𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗻, 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗴, 𝗦𝗼𝗯𝘂𝗵𝗹𝗲 𝗡𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗶, 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮, 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝘁𝗮𝗵-𝗟𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗞𝗼𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴, 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻 and 𝗦𝗮𝗱é 𝗠𝗮𝘆, took part in the annual Marco Wasserman tennis tournament, contested in Middelburg this past weekend.

Over the course of the two days, the players competed in a Round Robin doubles and mixed doubles format in the competition’s B-League, securing the following results:

• vs Cradock B: 48-16
• vs Kingswood B: 45-19
• vs Hoër Volkskool B: 39-25
• vs Middelburg B: 50-14

Despite facing tough competition, the Union learners performed exceptionally well, displaying their skills and 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. They left the tournament having gained valuable insights from the experience.

As the Union High School senior tennis programme enters a rebuilding phase with nine of its top 12 players matriculating this year, the new members of the team certainly demonstrated their potential during this tournament.

This past week saw twelve talented Union High School, Graaff-Reinet junior tennis players showcasing their abilities over three days of intense competition at the 2023 Spar Cradock Primary Tennis Tournament held in Cradock.

𝘽𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨’ 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙤𝙮𝙨’ 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙖𝙙𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙮, 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨.

The boys – consisting of 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻-𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗵, 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮, 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗺𝘂𝗶𝗿, 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗱𝘀𝗼𝗻 and 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘇 – delivered a commendable performance against formidable opponents (the likes of Tjokkies, Paarl Boys and Merrifield College among other), ending 8th overall out of 12 participating teams.

The girls’ team – consisting of 𝗠𝗶𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗮, 𝗡𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆, 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗔𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽, 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 – demonstrated their mettle by defeating Clarendon Primary, Victoria Park Primary and Cradock Primary. Despite their best efforts, the girls narrowly missed out on victories against Fichardt Park and De Aar, securing a commendable fourth-place finish out of the nine participating schools.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet Grade 6 learner, Jordan Maritz, who has been selected to represent the Eastern Province at the u/12 Southern Regional Rugby Tournament to be hosted in Riversdal from 28 to 30 September.

This tournament forms part of the u/12 talent identifications process in aid of identifying talent for the 2024 u/13 Craven Week side.

We were incredibly privileged this morning, to present seven Union High School, Graaff-Reinet 1st team hockey players – Mecoli Vorster, Leigh-Ann Murray, Misha Newton, Caytah-Leigh Koeberg, Anna Pringle, Sarah Jacobs and Sade May – with their well-deserved 𝟱𝟬𝗧𝗛 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗦 before the highly anticipated Interschools clash against Volkskool.

These exceptional athletes have shown unwavering commitment to the team since donning their 1st team kit for Union and 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙮 at the school on such a momentous occasion with a small token of our appreciation.

Season Overview
Union first hockey team had an exceptional hockey season during the 2023 season. The girls’ demonstrated exceptional grit and resilience, refusing to back down even in the face of tough challenges posed by tough opponents. They fought for every inch of the pitch, displaying remarkable determination and a never-say-die attitude. This unwavering spirit was the driving force behind their success.

Team Strategy
The success of the first team during the hockey season can be attributed to a well-executed team strategy, which emphasized the following elements:

Strong Defense: The team emphasized on a solid defensive structure, limiting the opponent’s scoring opportunities and providing a solid foundation to outlet from: Musa Zweni; Caytah-Leigh Koeberg; Anna Pringle; Sarah Jacobs; Tara Ferreira; Kenza Neill; Leigh-Ann Murray.

Counter-attacking Principles: we demonstrated impressive attacking options, combining skillful plays and quick transitions to create quality goal scoring opportunities: Brigette Oelofsen; Leah Marais; Sade May; Micole Vorster; Misha Newton; Lana Bouwer; Aaminah Steele Charlize Vorster.

Team Cohesion: The players exhibited a high level of chemistry and understanding on and off the field, which enhanced their ability to work together as a unit and support each other throughout the season.

The excellent hockey season is a testament to the players’ talent, hard work, and dedication. Their remarkable achievements, both individually and as a team, have brought pride to the School and joy to our supporters. we look ahead to the next season, it is evident that UNION FIRST HOCKEY TEAM will continue to be a force to be reckoned with, and their success will serve as an inspiration for future generations of hockey players at the school.

Sport Results

This past Friday afternoon, 28 July, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st team hockey girls took the field against a visiting York High School.

They put up a fantastic fight, playing with incredible teamwork and passion throughout the game. However, in a nail-biting finish, York managed to secure a narrow victory with a score of 2-1 in the last couple of minutes.

𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴!

In addition to the 1st team match, our 𝘂/𝟭𝟲𝗔 team and 𝘂/𝟭𝟰𝗔 team also demonstrated their talent and sportsmanship. The u/16A team faced a tough challenge, but their resilience and dedication were truly commendable. Although they lost with a score of 6-0, their spirit remained unbroken. Similarly, our u/14A team fought hard and showcased their skills, unfortunately losing with a score of 2-1.
