Union High School boasts an exceptional musical programme, embodied by its stunning Blüthner Patent Grand Piano, Model 7.

The story of Blüthner pianos begins with Julius Blüthner, who was born in Falkenhain, Germany, in 1824. Initially a cabinet-maker, Blüthner founded his piano-making business in 1853. His dedication and innovation quickly garnered attention; his pianos were showcased at the Industrial Exhibition in 1854 and later adopted by the Leipzig Conservatory. By the turn of the 20th century, Blüthner had become Europe’s second-largest piano manufacturer, producing both grand and upright models that were celebrated worldwide.

𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗹ü𝘁𝗵𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Zelda Oosthuizen, the school’s senior music teacher, enlisted the expertise of Mark Davis from Mark Davis Piano Service in Cape Town to restore the instrument’s mechanism. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟰 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟱𝟮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

The restoration focused on revitalizing components that had experienced wear and tear over the decades. Worn cloth, felt and leather were replaced with new materials, including key mortise bushings, backcheck leather, and various felt components.

Additionally, new hammer shanks, flanges and hammerheads were installed, with all center pins replaced to optimize friction and mechanical performance. Each friction point and surface was carefully lubricated, ensuring smooth operation, before the action was reassembled and regulated for optimal performance.

𝘛𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰’𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘴 𝘑𝘢𝘩𝘯 𝘗𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘣𝘦𝘭 𝘗𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘎𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺. Mark Davis took great care to replace only those materials that had suffered significant deterioration, preserving the unique character of the Blüthner while restoring it to excellent playing condition.

In an additional effort to accommodate the local climate, the piano was pitch-corrected and tuned to A442. This tuning choice considers Graaff-Reinet’s humid summer climate, preventing the pitch from dropping too far during the drier winter months. By tuning to A442 in summer, the piano maintains an optimal pitch range throughout the year, ensuring that its musical integrity remains intact.

We are thrilled to announce a landmark moment in the history of Union High School – for the first time since 1971, the entire Interschools festival will be hosted on the Union campus!

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵-𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗳.

For years, the rugby games have been held at the Botanics Sports Grounds, but after much debate, careful negotiation and meticulous planning, it has been decided that Interschools 2025 will bring all the action back to the Union Schools’ campus. This is a monumental occasion for the Union community, one that promises to elevate the Interschools experience to new heights!

The atmosphere at Union during Interschools is electric and this time around, watching the rugby matches from the comfort and familiar surroundings of The Union will undoubtedly take the event to another level. The stands will be packed, the crowds will be roaring and the spirit of the Union Schools will be alive like never before.

This momentous occasion is not only for the current learners, staff and families, but we also want to invite all Old Unionites from near and far to join us for the festivities.

Whether you’re a recent matriculant or someone who walked the halls decades ago, Interschools 2025 will be an event to remember – one that binds generations of Union alumni in celebration of the school that has shaped us all.
The Union spirit is timeless, and we look forward to seeing as many Old Unionites as possible returning to their alma mater for this historic event.

This past year, Union High School has made significant strides in improving its grounds and buildings, marking a commitment to providing a 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 for all learners.

From the resurfacing of the AstroTurf to the installation of closed-circuit television cameras and the revamping of classrooms, the initiatives have created a more vibrant and secure educational setting.

𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗜𝗗 𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠

We were extremely pleased to be able to utilise our brand-new First Aid Room for the first time during this year’s winter sports programme. 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗙

One of the highlights of the year was the official opening of the newly resurfaced AstroTurf during the school’s annual Founders’ Weekend celebrations. The highly anticipated event brought together hockey players, parents, staff, friends of the school and Old Unionites to celebrate the milestone. The ceremony, filled with excitement and pride, culminated in the ceremonial cutting of the red ribbon, symbolizing a new chapter for sports at the School. 𝗖𝗖𝗧𝗩 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

In line with its commitment to safety, the school installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in all junior school classrooms and the quad area. This crucial initiative aims to create a protective environment for learners, staff and visitors. The strategically placed cameras cover essential areas, including entrances, hallways and classrooms, ensuring thorough surveillance of the school’s primary department. 𝘉𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘴. The proactive approach to campus security reflects the school’s dedication to nurturing a safe learning environment.

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠𝗦

In addition to the transformation undergone by the old bookroom into a stunning state-of-the-art teaching space, the hardworking groundsmen undertook significant renovations during the fourth term to the Life Sciences classroom and the Lecture Room. These vital spaces received special attention to create engaging and inspiring environments conducive to learning. The commitment to excellence at the school extends beyond the curriculum; it encompasses providing an atmosphere where curiosity and a love for learning can flourish. 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗩𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹.

Mrs Vorster joined Union High School in 1999 and since that day, she has embraced every opportunity to engage with the school community. Her passion for education and commitment to her learners have been evident in her multifaceted involvement – coaching tennis, golf and hockey, as well as supporting numerous musicals and Interact fundraisers. Her dedication to the arts and sports has enriched the lives of countless learners, fostering a spirit of teamwork and creativity.

As a teacher, Mrs Vorster brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to her learners. Many matriculants can attest to the invaluable insights gained from her Grade 7 Afrikaans notes, which have become a trusted resource in preparation for their final NSC Afrikaans examination. 𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲.

In crafting this tribute, we find it fitting to blend the past and present tenses as Mrs Vorster’s attributes remain timeless; they continue to shine brightly even as she steps into a new chapter of her life. She has left an indelible mark on Union High School, gracefully navigating the waves of change while always prioritizing the well-being of her learners and colleagues.

Empathy has been a constant companion for Mrs Vorster, guiding her interactions and creating a nurturing classroom environment. Many young lives have been touched by her unwavering support and compassion, which have fostered a sense of belonging and encouragement among her learners.

Life’s challenges are universal, and Mrs Vorster has faced her own with courage and resilience. In times of personal setbacks, she has leaned on her faith, drawing strength from the One who supports us during our darkest hours. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲.

As we reflect on her time at Union High School, we do so with tremendous fondness. Aunty Louise, as she is affectionately known, leaves us equipped with her talent, wisdom and a heart full of love. 𝙒𝙚 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮, 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚.

Mrs Vorster’s association with Union High School has been a fruitful season and as she prepares to embrace new adventures, we know she does so with her feet firmly planted on the Word of God, eagerly anticipating the blessings that lie ahead. While she may be retiring from her official role, her influence and legacy will forever remain woven into the fabric of our school community.
