Camdeboo Eisteddfod 2024

The Welsh word ‘๐—˜๐—œ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—˜๐——๐——๐—™๐—ข๐——’ is formed from the Welsh morphemes: eistedd โ€“ meaning โ€˜sitโ€™ and fod โ€“ meaning โ€˜beโ€™ – culminating in the definition, โ€œsitting togetherโ€.

As strange as this sounds, when one considers that the earliest form of the eisteddfod was a competitive meeting between bards and minstrels, it does make perfect sense! In centuries gone by, the winner was chosen by a noble or royal patron.

The vision of Union High School, Graaff-Reinetโ€™s Cultural Department is ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฐ, ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฑ. This yearโ€™s Camdeboo Eisteddfod was an astonishing celebration of exactly that.

The Eisteddfod took place over three busy days. An increase in entries this year led to logistical and administrative challenges, but thanks to an online entry platform using Google Forms and an extensive set of guidelines, the programme was effectively streamlined.

As each item was performed โ€“ be it a song, piano piece, dance or prose โ€“ it was immediately judged, a comment written and a certificate completed. This could not have happened without the invaluable assistance of Union moms, Marie-Louise Oosthuizen and Marsha Bouwer.

Mrs Sharon Krige printed hundreds of certificates and the technical assistance of Johan du Plessis and Muhamad Ahmed were also greatly appreciated. The Eisteddfod committee is especially grateful to Mr Donald Kingwill and his team who really went beyond the call of duty from dawn until dusk, fetching, cleaning, carrying and re-arranging during a very busy week.

As the Camdeboo Eisteddfod drew to a close late on the Friday afternoon, the organisers (๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š๐™™ ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™š) consisting of Ms Zelda Oosthuizen, Mrs Sanette Brink, Mrs Tracy-Lee Chutu and Mrs Bronwen Langmead breathed a collective sigh of satisfaction that it had been a resounding success for the Cultural Department of Union.

Interschools 2024 – Results

๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ๐—–๐—›๐—ข๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐—ฆ is more than just an annual event; itโ€™s a tapestry woven with deep emotions, fierce competition and unforgettable memories. Every year, this special occasion seems to draw out the very best and, at times, the worst in us. But this duality is not something to be feared or resented – it’s reflection of our deep passion and unwavering commitment to our children. We cheer with all our might when they excel and we feel every stumble as if it were our own.

The intensity of our emotions during Interschools stems from a place of love, pride and an earnest desire to see our children succeed. Itโ€™s in these moments that our true selves are revealed, for better or for worse. We find ourselves in the joyous highs of victory, but also in the quiet moments of reflection after a loss.

This ebb and flow of emotions is not new.
