Staff Awarded For Commitment And Long Service

We were very fortunate to be able to start our year off by celebrating some of our staffโ€™s long-service milestones.
While we continue to reiterate that the commitment, dedication and hard work by all staff is noticed, greatly appreciated and worthy of recognition, in this particular event we honoured members of staff who have been with Union for 10 years (2 awardees), 15 years (1 awardee) and 20 years (1 awardee).
Over the years, these loyal colleagues have helped to make this institution and the Union community who we are today.
Please join us in congratulating Mr ๐™ƒ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ค ๐™Ž๐™ฅ๐™–๐™ง๐™ง๐™ž๐™ช๐™จ (10 years), Mrs ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™๐™ฎ ๐™‹๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ก๐™š (10 years), Mr ๐™…๐™ค๐™จ๐™š๐™ฅ๐™ ๐™Š๐™ค๐™ง๐™ข๐™š๐™ฎ๐™š๐™ง (15 years) and Mrs ๐™‰๐™š๐™ก๐™ž๐™– ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™™ (20 years).

Virtual Music Showcase

Over the past two years, Union High Schoolโ€™s music students have continued to make steady progress on the piano despite the many disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
As they’ve been deprived of the opportunity of performing in front of a live audience for quite some time, our Music teachers, Mrs Sanette Brink and Ms Zelda van Rooyen, dead set on sharing their studentsโ€™ talents with the Union community, asked all their pianists to carefully prepare a piece for a virtual music showcase at the end of 2021.
Please take the time to watch our fabulous performers!
The showcase includes performances on the piano by all our pianists and includes beginner piano pieces through to advanced.
Thank you to all of our performers for taking the time to video and share your beautiful music.
We look forward to the day that our Music Department can host their Annual Music Evening in person on the Union stage again just like in years past.

“As the 2021 academic year draws to a close, we are, as always, extremely grateful to our Headmaster, Mr. W.E. Pringle and the Union High School staff.
The commitment and determination of our teachers and non-teaching staff ensured successful navigation of the schoolโ€™s affairs amidst many challenges in the education sector, but also in our day-to-day lives.
Whilst the scale of the Covid-19 pandemic amplified, our staff remained steadfast and they excelled under difficult circumstances.
With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the resolve of our school has been tested to the limit, but the Union community saw it through and performed marvellously in trying circumstances.
In line with our commitment to quality education, Union continued teaching on online platforms during the lockdown period, and was the first school in the region to resume normal in-person classes for all our grades.
The new members of the schoolโ€™s Governing Body were inducted approximately four months later than expected, but each member has taken to his/her portfolio with excitement and enthusiasm. We are certainly blessed to have a team of governors with a wealth of skills, qualities and dedication that will benefit the school immensely. In the limited time up to the present, the SGB has tackled several exciting and ground-breaking projects.
The governors and staff have a shared view of keeping Union at the cutting edge of advancement, staff development, modern education methods and superior facilities/equipment, with particular emphasis being placed on language literacy, science and mathematics.
With the generous support of a corporate sponsor, we are in a position to invest in advanced staff enrichment, classroom modernisation, hi-tech wireless connectivity and the like.

We also owe our gratitude to you as parents and guardians. Parents make up a very important component of the Union family. Without your support and resilience, Union would have faced an uphill battle to keep the ship afloat. You have shown that the hardship faced by society did not deter you from giving your child the support needed to get the best education in our region. The school is dependent on our parents and guardians to achieve success in its mandate to provide quality education.
We would, therefore, like to encourage all parents to remain closely involved with your childโ€™s education and we will always welcome your inputs and suggestions.
As we all prepare to take time out to recharge our batteries, we would like to wish you all a peaceful and blessed festive season with your loved ones.
Be safe and be kind.”

Matrics Donating Shoes To Those Less Fortunate

As soon as they put down their pens after writing their last exam on Wednesday morning, 1 December, Union High Schoolโ€™s 2021 matrics โ€“ the schoolโ€™s newest alumni โ€“ put their school shoes on their desks to be donated to those less fortunate.
This has become a popular way for Unionโ€™s Grade 12s to give back at the end of their high school careers.
As we watched the matriculants leave the school in high spirits – either barefoot, in flip flops, or wearing only their socks – our hearts swelled.
At Union, we strive to cultivate a culture of giving among our learners and seeing so many pairs of shoes and knowing the importance they hold for the underprivileged, make us very proud of our learners.
