This past Saturday, 20 January, the Union u/13A cricket team took part in a 𝗧𝟮𝟬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 held at Woodridge College.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙩. 𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚’𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙥, where Union won the toss and opted to bat first.

Although Union lost an early wicket, it paved the way for an outstanding 161-run partnership for the second wicket between 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 and 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹.

Mills contributed a commendable 63 runs, while Kingwill showcased his skills with a 66-run knock. Union concluded their innings with a formidable total of 169/1.

In response, the Union bowlers came out firing and managed to contain St. George’s, limiting them to 85/6. 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗩𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 and 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 proved to be the standout performers, each taking two wickets apiece.

𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 84 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘴.

The second game of the day saw Union facing off against Muir College. Union took their turn to bat first, but faced some tough opposition and were restricted to a total of 99/6 in their allotted 20 overs. 𝙐𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙙𝙢𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝.

Muir College ultimately emerged as the winners, achieving the required total with six wickets in hand. However, Union’s spirited fight was evident until the second last over when Muir secured the victory. 𝗥𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 excelled with the ball, claiming two crucial wickets for Union.

Although Union suffered a loss in this second game, their performance and fighting spirit certainly left a lasting impression. The team showcased great sportsmanship and never gave up until the final ball was bowled.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙪/13𝘼 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨! We eagerly anticipate seeing their continued growth and success in future competitions.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to Union learners 𝗞𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗮𝗿𝘀𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗱 (Grade 5) and 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 (Grade 7) who have been selected for the ECHS u/13 invitational hockey team, which will see them represent their school and country as they embark on an exciting tour to the Netherlands later this year.

𝙄𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧, 𝙆𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙩 𝘼𝙢𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙢, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙖𝙜𝙪𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙖𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙩. During their time there, they will not only compete against renowned hockey clubs but also attend coaching clinics led by esteemed international coaches. This experience will undoubtedly enhance their skills and further nurture their passion for the sport.

This past weekend, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet proudly saw 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗸𝗲 represent the school in the u/17 boys category at the 5th Biathlon League event held in Gqeberha.

The day kicked off with an exhilarating 800m sprint, where Ben lined up alongside nine other athletes. With an explosive start and a thrilling finish, Ben showcased his talents and claimed a well-deserved second place. Clocking in at an impressive Personal Best time of 2:16.01, he narrowly missed out on first place (2:15.71).

Next on the agenda was the 100m freestyle swim, which took place in the Newton Park Swimming Pool. Ben crossed the finish line in an outstanding time of 1:05.64, finishing just behind the leading time of 1:02.56.

When the final scores were tallied, a total of 2043.78 points saw Ben emerge as the overall champion of the boys u/17 event.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learner 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 recently participated in the Waterlea Endurance Ride.

Mounted on his horse, Mahdeeva, who had completed all her novice stages, Tristan took on the challenge of his first competitive 80km ride.

𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙨𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨, 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙨.

He claimed the coveted 1st place in the young riders category and an impressive 2nd place overall. Completing the endurance ride in a commendable time of 4 hours, 15 minutes, and 21 seconds, Tristan demonstrated his dedication and passion for the sport.

Tristan’s was also presented with the Photographers Choice Award. This award recognises his incredible progression and unwavering commitment over the past year. Tristan’s positive attitude and unwavering spirit have truly set him apart.

At Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s final assembly for 2023 on the last day of school, young Grade 7 cricketer 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻 was congratulated on taking 5 wickets for 12 runs in 5 overs in a recent encounter against Frans Conradie.

On Wednesday afternoon, 25 October, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Grade 8 to 12 athletes participated in the annual Senior Interschools Athletics event held at Hoër Volkskool.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀.

In a tightly contested afternoon, the final scores saw Union accumulate 742 points to Volkskool’s 731 points. 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵!

We would like to recognise Camran Swartz as Union’s 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬. Camran managed to secure first places in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Additionally, he also claimed third place in the Long Jump event. Well done, Camran!

We’d also like to acknowledge the performances of Qhama Solomon, Luvelo Makaula and Xavier Barlow, who achieved numerous podium positions and contributed significantly to Union’s success.

On the girls’ side, Charlize Vorster deserves special recognition for her outstanding contribution of points, which played a crucial role in Union’s victory. We also applaud Tara Ferreira, Joy Merifield and Ambesiwi Tokwe for making their mark and showcasing their talent.

This past weekend saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Top 4 junior girls and boys tennis players participating in the annual 𝗝𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 in Graaff-Reinet.

The girls’ team competed against formidable opponents from Stellenbosch, Worcester and Cradock in the group stage, emerging victorious in all their encounters to finish at the top of their group.

𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙚. Despite their valiant efforts, they narrowly missed out on a win, settling for a well-deserved second place in the tournament.

The junior boys’ team faced opponents from Stirling, Stellenbosch C and Cradock in the group stages. They managed to secure a commendable second place in their group.

In the battle for third and fourth place, the boys engaged in an encounter against Stellenbosch B. Although they fought gallantly, they narrowly missed out on claiming the third spot, ultimately securing a respectable fourth place in the competition.

The recent Interschools’ athletics meet, contested by the Grade 1 to 7 learners of Union and Volkskool on Monday afternoon, 23 October, saw several records being broken.

Six of these new records were set by Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s Grade 5 to 7 athletes.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to the following new 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦:

– Boys u/11 Shotput: 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁é 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 surpassed the previous record of 8.77 meters by achieving a remarkable throw of 9.46 meters.

– Girls u/11 100m and High Jump: 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗞𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮-𝗞𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘇𝗮 proved her versatility in both sprinting and high jump. She improved the 100m record from 14.57 seconds to an impressive 14.44 seconds. Additionally, she raised the bar in the High Jump from 1.12 meters to a height of 1.15 meters.

– Girls u/12 100m and Long Jump: 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 set two new records. She bettered the 100m record from 14.28 seconds to 14.15 seconds. Furthermore, she excelled in the Long Jump, surpassing the previous record of 3.84 meters with an impressive jump of 4.22 meters.

– Girls u/13 High Jump: 𝗔𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 improved the previous record of 1.27 meters to a height of 1.31 meters.

Sport Results

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s impressive chess players on their outstanding achievements at the recent Eastern Province Chess Championship held in Jeffreys Bay!

In the u/16 Boys’ category, 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲 secured a well-deserved silver medal in the team competition. Great job, Neelon!

In the u/16 Girls’ category, 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗲 (who captained the Sarah Baartman chess team), along with 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘁𝗮, demonstrated remarkable talent and earned silver medals in the team competition.

In the u/18 Girls’ category, 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘁 captained the Sarah Baartman team and brought home a gold medal in the team competition. Congratulations, Sarah!
