Cricket Results: U/13A T20 Festival

This past Saturday, 20 January, the Union u/13A cricket team took part in a ๐—ง๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ ๐—™๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—”๐—Ÿ held at Woodridge College.

๐™๐™๐™š ๐™™๐™–๐™ฎ ๐™—๐™š๐™œ๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ ๐™– ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™˜๐™ ๐™–๐™œ๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™Ž๐™ฉ. ๐™‚๐™š๐™ค๐™ง๐™œ๐™š’๐™จ ๐™‹๐™ง๐™š๐™ฅ, where Union won the toss and opted to bat first.

Although Union lost an early wicket, it paved the way for an outstanding 161-run partnership for the second wicket between ๐——๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜€ and ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น.

Mills contributed a commendable 63 runs, while Kingwill showcased his skills with a 66-run knock. Union concluded their innings with a formidable total of 169/1.

In response, the Union bowlers came out firing and managed to contain St. George’s, limiting them to 85/6. ๐—๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐—ฉ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ and ๐—”๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—™๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ proved to be the standout performers, each taking two wickets apiece.

The second game of the day saw Union facing off against Muir College. Muir College ultimately emerged as the winners, achieving the required total with six wickets in hand. However, Union’s spirited fight was evident until the second last over when Muir secured the victory. ๐—ฅ๐˜†๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ป ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ฒ excelled with the ball, claiming two crucial wickets for Union.

Although Union suffered a loss in this second game, their performance and fighting spirit certainly left a lasting impression. The team showcased great sportsmanship and never gave up until the final ball was bowled.

Hockey: ECHS Invitational Team

Biathlon

This past weekend,ย Union High School, Graaff-Reinetย proudly saw ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ธ๐—ฒ represent the school in the u/17 boys category at the 5th Biathlon League event held in Gqeberha.

The day kicked off with an exhilarating 800m sprint, where Ben lined up alongside nine other athletes. With an explosive start and a thrilling finish, Ben showcased his talents and claimed a well-deserved second place. Clocking in at an impressive Personal Best time of 2:16.01, he narrowly missed out on first place (2:15.71).

Next on the agenda was the 100m freestyle swim, which took place in the Newton Park Swimming Pool. Ben crossed the finish line in an outstanding time of 1:05.64, finishing just behind the leading time of 1:02.56.

When the final scores were tallied, a total of 2043.78 points saw Ben emerge as the overall champion of the boys u/17 event.

Endurance Riding – Well done Tristan

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learner ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—›๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ recently participated in the Waterlea Endurance Ride.

Mounted on his horse, Mahdeeva, who had completed all her novice stages, Tristan took on the challenge of his first competitive 80km ride.

He claimed the coveted 1st place in the young riders category and an impressive 2nd place overall. Completing the endurance ride in a commendable time of 4 hours, 15 minutes, and 21 seconds, Tristan demonstrated his dedication and passion for the sport.

Tristan’s was also presented with the Photographers Choice Award. This award recognises his incredible progression and unwavering commitment over the past year. Tristan’s positive attitude and unwavering spirit have truly set him apart.

Senior Interschools Athletics

On Wednesday afternoon, 25 October, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Grade 8 to 12 athletes participated in the annual Senior Interschools Athletics event held at Hoรซr Volkskool.

We would like to recognise Camran Swartz as Unionโ€™s ๐—”๐—ง๐—›๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ง๐—˜ ๐—ข๐—™ ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐——๐—”๐—ฌ. Camran managed to secure first places in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Additionally, he also claimed third place in the Long Jump event. Well done, Camran!

Weโ€™d also like to acknowledge the performances of Qhama Solomon, Luvelo Makaula and Xavier Barlow, who achieved numerous podium positions and contributed significantly to Union’s success.

On the girls’ side, Charlize Vorster deserves special recognition for her outstanding contribution of points, which played a crucial role in Union’s victory. We also applaud Tara Ferreira, Joy Merifield and Ambesiwi Tokwe for making their mark and showcasing their talent.

Jocelyn Marais Tennis Tournament

The girls’ team competed against formidable opponents from Stellenbosch, Worcester and Cradock in the group stage, emerging victorious in all their encounters to finish at the top of their group.

The junior boys’ team faced opponents from Stirling, Stellenbosch C and Cradock in the group stages. They managed to secure a commendable second place in their group.

In the battle for third and fourth place, the boys engaged in an encounter against Stellenbosch B. Although they fought gallantly, they narrowly missed out on claiming the third spot, ultimately securing a respectable fourth place in the competition.

Junior Interschools Athletics

The recent Interschools’ athletics meet, contested by the Grade 1 to 7 learners of Union and Volkskool on Monday afternoon, 23 October, saw several records being broken.

Six of these new records were set by Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s Grade 5 to 7 athletes.

– Boys u/11 Shotput: ๐——๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜รฉ ๐— ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜€ surpassed the previous record of 8.77 meters by achieving a remarkable throw of 9.46 meters.

– Girls u/11 100m and High Jump: ๐—”๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—ž๐˜†๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ-๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‡๐—ฎ proved her versatility in both sprinting and high jump. She improved the 100m record from 14.57 seconds to an impressive 14.44 seconds. Additionally, she raised the bar in the High Jump from 1.12 meters to a height of 1.15 meters.

– Girls u/12 100m and Long Jump: ๐— ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ set two new records. She bettered the 100m record from 14.28 seconds to 14.15 seconds. Furthermore, she excelled in the Long Jump, surpassing the previous record of 3.84 meters with an impressive jump of 4.22 meters.

– Girls u/13 High Jump: ๐—”๐—น๐˜†๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฝ improved the previous record of 1.27 meters to a height of 1.31 meters.

EP Chess Championship
