It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of ๐ ๐ฟ ๐ฆ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ต๐ผ๐๐ a cherished member of the Union Schools community today.

He was a true pillar of our community and his absence will be deeply felt.
Our hearts go out to his wife, Trudi, their beloved daughters, Amber and Chantรฉ, and the rest of his extended family. We offer them our deepest condolences and pray for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
During Term 2, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Primary English Department (Grades 5, 6 and 7) embarked on an exciting educational journey by hosting a spelling contest designed to enhance the vocabulary and comprehension skills of their learners.
The contest began with the distribution of spelling lists at the start of the term. Learners were instructed to mark off a few words each week, which they were required to learn for homework every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ณ๐๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐, ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ต๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ป๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐. Alongside learning the correct spellings, learners were also tasked with understanding the meanings of these words, thereby integrating language skills with their overall academic curriculum.
The highlight of this term-long endeavour was the spelling contest, where learners showcased their learning and competed for top honours. The competition culminated in recognizing the best spellers in each grade, with winners receiving well-deserved cash prizes.
We are extremely pleased to be able to utilise our brand-new ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ง ๐๐๐ room for the first time. ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป and care for our sportsmen and women, ensuring their health and safety are prioritized at all times.
On Saturday the 25th of May 2024, Union’s 1st XV travelled to Uitenhage ( Kariega) to play against Bergsig.
Bergsig got off to a flying start by scoring the first try and taking the lead. Union got a penalty and decided to take the three points. Bergsig however managed to break the Union defence on several more opportunities and extending their lead. Bergsig won the game by 3-45.

Two big chess tournaments are coming up soon in Graaff-Reinet!
The 3rd round of the Sarah Baartman Chess Trials will will be held at Union High School on Saturday 1 June. We encourage chess players of all ages to enter.
Cash prizes and medals will be awarded to the winners in each category.
On 11 June Laer Volkskool will be hosting the Graaff-Reinet Circuit All Ages School’s Chess Tournament where the best 5 chess players in each age group in Graaff-Reinet will be selected to compete in a triangular tournament against the other districts.

These five learners demonstrated exceptionally diverse subject knowledge to secure the top scores in the competition.
Their success has earned them the honour of representing Union at the upcoming ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐น’๐ ๐๐๐น๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด, where they will compete in the Quiz competition.
๐ช๐๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ก๐ to Gerda Clark, Cayla Newton and Alex Hunter who emerged as the top scorers among the Grade 8 and 9 learners in Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s recent ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ competition.
These four exceptional learners will proudly represent Union in the annual Speech Competition during this year’s ๐๐ก๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐๐ข๐ข๐๐ฆ’ week.
Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior sports teams faced off against a visiting Herbert Hurd side this past Saturday.
The ๐/๐ญ๐ฏ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ด๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐บ secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 15-10. The ๐/๐ญ๐ฏ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ด๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐บ gave it their all until the very last minute but, despite their impressive efforts, they narrowly lost to the Herbert Hurd side with a score of 17-24.
Switching gears to hockey, Union’s ๐/๐ญ๐ฏ๐ and ๐/๐ญ๐ฏ๐ teams displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship, although they both faced tough opponents and were narrowly defeated with a score of 0-1 in each match.
The ๐/๐ญ๐ฏ๐ and ๐/๐ญ๐ฏ๐ hockey teams delivered outstanding performances, bringing home two victories for Union. The u/13B team dominated the field with an impressive 6-0 win, while the u/13A team showcased their skills and secured a solid 2-0 victory.
Fourteen junior and senior chess players from Union High School, Graaff-Reinet are representing their school with pride at the 2024 ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ง๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ being held in Jeffrey’s Bay this weekend.
