In the blink of an eye, we’ve shifted gears from the excitement of sport to the celebration of culture, as our much-anticipated Camdeboo Eisteddfod officially kicked off today.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 𝗼𝗳 𝟯 set the tone beautifully, with energetic and heartfelt dance performances.

𝘌𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥.

What a wonderful start to this festival of talent – and 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 of music, drama and expression still to come.

When an event of this scale takes place, words often fall short in trying to capture the depth of our gratitude.

From 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, who immediately saw the value in the occasion and came onboard as main sponsor, to 𝗢𝗩𝗞, who tirelessly drove trailer after trailer to provide the perimetre fencing around our rugby field and 𝗛𝗼ë𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝗸𝘀𝗸𝗼𝗼𝗹, who so generously allowed us the use of their spectator stands – we are humbled.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to 𝗜𝗦𝗨 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗹 for supplying skips and rubbish bins, to 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘆 for sponsoring the special treats enjoyed by our junior teams, to our 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 and 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 who manned the gates with a smile, to the 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 and 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 who provided a steady stream of encouragement throughout and to our 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 for ensuring everything ran smoothly and safely.

Behind the scenes, our 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 once again showed their pride and dedication in preparing our grounds so beautifully, while our 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 stood by our learners every step of the way. To the 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝘀 who quietly baked, arranged flowers and hosted, the 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 who managed the endless administration and the 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 of both Union High School, Graaff-Reinet and Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet who gave their constant encouragement – we are deeply thankful.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 and we are working hard to ensure everyone receives the recognition they deserve.

This past weekend was nothing short of unforgettable as we proudly hosted our annual 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹 – for the first time since 1971.

𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥, 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘩 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵.

Union is incredibly proud to have claimed the overall Interschools trophy this year with a final score of 64-42!

But more than the score, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

To us, Interschools has never been about one team or one game – 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁.

It is chess, speech, tennis, hockey, rugby, cross country and so much more.

𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳, 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩, 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴.

This win is a true testament to our learners – their dedication, resilience and pride in their school.

To them, we say: 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨. You have made us all so very proud.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻.

What stood out most wasn’t just the roar of the crowds, the triumphs and heartbreaks on the fields, or the sea of colours filling every corner of our campus – it was a simple but powerful comment: “𝘐𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘺, 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭.”

And that, perhaps, says it all.

Beyond the scoreboards and results, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹.

It was laughter, cheers, embraces and memories that will last a lifetime.

As you step through the Bruce Maree Gates and into Union High School you are now greeted by something new – and profoundly meaningful.

An elegant cast iron signpost stands proudly at the entrance, its directional fingers not pointing to places, but to principles: 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆.

This is more than just a beautiful addition to our campus – 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻. Each word has been carefully chosen, representing the ideals we strive to live by, both in and out of the classroom.

At Union, we believe education extends far beyond academics. It is about shaping character, fostering compassion and instilling a strong moral compass that will serve our learners for a lifetime. This morning marked a very special first for Union High School, Graaff-Reinet, as our u/13A hockey and rugby starting line-up for Interschools were treated to their very own junior scarf ceremony – 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀.

In front of their peers, the teams were proudly announced before being presented with their very own Interschools scarves by our senior 1st team captains.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 – 𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘤𝘺.
