Union’s annual speech competitions concluded recently with outstanding performances from our talented learners.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Joy Merifield and Asive Dwane, as well as Amber Bezuidenhout and Zusange Phehlukwayo, on coming out tops.

𝘑𝘰𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 11 𝘢𝘯𝘥 12 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴. 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 8, 9 𝘢𝘯𝘥 10 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘈𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘡𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴.

These four exceptional learners will proudly represent Union in the annual Speech Competition during this year’s 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗦’ week.

This week, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet had the privilege of hosting Nicolas Tisdale, an ex-professional rugby player turned dedicated and driven professional rugby coach.

𝙏𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩, 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧.

With a background spanning all levels of age group and adult rugby through clubs, schools and professional sports clubs, he has a proven track record of success. His expertise has helped nurture professional players, achieve league promotions and facilitate schools in succeeding at national competitions both in the UK and in South Africa.

𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴:

• Head of Rugby at Malvern College in Worcester, England, United Kingdom
• Scottish Exiles coach and regional manager for the Scottish RFU
• Coaching consultant for various South African schools such as St Stithians College and Michaelhouse School
• Elite Player Development Coach at Worcester Warriors RFC / Midland West Academy

Throughout his week at Union, 𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. His guidance was instrumental in enhancing the skills and understanding of the young athletes, who greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn from such a distinguished professional.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 𝗘𝗖𝗢 𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗕 recently concluded a three-week educational theme focused on the benefits of healthy, seasonal fruits and vegetables, emphasizing their nutritional values.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴.

During the second week, the club organised an insightful visit to Pick n Pay. Here, 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙫𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙨, 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙨 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨.

In the final lesson, the learners applied what they learned by calculating the cost and contents of healthy lunch boxes. This exercise helped them grasp practical aspects of meal planning, ensuring their choices were both nutritious and economical.

To cap off the theme, the Eco Club members created a vibrant poster showcasing everyone’s efforts and choices. This poster not only highlighted the students’ newfound knowledge but also served as a visual representation of their commitment to healthy eating.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Grade 11 Geography learners recently had the opportunity to visit the local water purification plant and pump station as part of their curriculum.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀.

During the visit, learners were given a comprehensive tour of the facilities, where they observed the various stages of water purification and the mechanisms involved in pumping water to the community.

This week, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗕 experienced an enriching visit to the studio of renowned artist David Langmead.

The visit was a unique opportunity for the budding artists to gain insights from a professional, and it proved to be an unforgettable hour.

During their time at the studio, Mr Langmead generously shared his expertise on various crucial aspects of art, including composition, perspective and painting techniques.

Representing your school is always a major honour, but reaching the milestone of 50 first team caps is something that does not come around too often.

Five members of the Union High School, Graaff-Reinet 1st hockey team received the incredible honour of taking the field in their 50th match for their school!

Prior to their encounter against Framesby this afternoon, Friday, 10 May, 𝗔𝗺𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄, 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮, 𝗧𝘆𝗿𝗮 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝗔𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲 and 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹 were presented with their official 50 cap certificate as well as a small gift on behalf of the team in which they have so valiantly served for the past two years.

Amy, Tara, Tyra, Aaminah and Kenza have been true ambassadors of the 1st XI and we could not be prouder of them.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet is buzzing with anticipation as several exciting construction projects are currently underway – from modernizing classrooms to improving facilities for essential services, the school is investing in its infrastructure to better serve its learners and staff.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, where the old Book Room is undergoing a complete overhaul. This once humble space is being completely gutted and reimagined as a state-of-the-art mathematics classroom – equipped with the latest technology and designed to foster collaborative learning, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴.

• In addition to enhancing academic facilities, Union is also prioritizing the well-being of its learners and staff by establishing 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗶𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺. This dedicated space will not only serve as a hub for first aiders to administer care on derby days, but also provide a tranquil environment for individuals in need of assistance during sports encounters.

• Recognizing the invaluable contributions of its ground staff, Union is also embarking on the construction of 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺. This space will offer a welcome retreat for the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to maintain the school grounds – complete with modern amenities and comfortable furnishings, the break room will provide a well-deserved respite for these valued members of the school community.

The 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗬 for the newly elected u/14, u/16 and u/18 EP hockey sides took place at Pearson High School in Gqeberha this past Sunday, celebrating the talent and dedication of the province’s young hockey players.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet is excited to announce that we are making space for several new AstroTurf advertising boards this year.

The support of local businesses has been instrumental in the success of our AstroTurf project from its inception, with their annual contributions playing a big role in our ability to resurface our facility recently.
