Early this morning, Friday, 1 September, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet congregated on the sportsfields to partake in a special assembly marking Arbor Day.
This year’s event centred around the ceremonial planting of a Camdeboo Stinkwood tree, chosen for its significance and contribution to the local ecosystem.
The assembly began with a captivating devotion led by the passionate members of the schoolโs Eco Club, who highlighted the intrinsic value of trees and their profound impact on the environment. The school body attentively listened as the Eco Club recited inspiring passages, urging everyone to take care of the natural world.
(The annual Arbor Day celebrations at Union High School not only serves to beautify the campus but also enriched the school’s environmental legacy. The newly planted Camdeboo Stinkwood serves as a symbol of growth, resilience and the schoolโs unwavering commitment to sustainability.)

Union Grade 12 learners, Arno Nell and David Kinghorn, recently enjoyed the extraordinary opportunity of being flown from Graaff-Reinet to Gqeberha in a Sling 4 aircraft, to participate in an educational excursion geared towards young minds aspiring to explore the realm of aviation.
Upon their arrival in Gqeberha, the learners were warmly welcomed to the Air Traffic Control Tower at the Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport. The dedicated team from the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) graciously took the time to explain to Arno and David the intricacies of air traffic control operations. Witnessing the team’s enthusiasm for their work left an indelible impression on the learners, inspiring them to explore potential careers in this field.
