This past weekend, the Union High School boys affiliated to the Graaff-Reinet Scout Troop participated in one of Scouting’s best known and most loved traditions – camping!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

They honed their survival skills by learning how to build shelters, tried their hand at backwoods engineering and told stories around a crackling campfire, all under the watchful guidance of their seasoned scout leaders.

𝘈𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦, 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.

Today, Union High School’s Scouts are proudly wearing their scarves to school in celebration of 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗙 𝗗𝗔𝗬.

𝘖𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘯 1 𝘈𝘶𝘨𝘶𝘴𝘵, 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘧 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵-𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘢 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 1907 – 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.

The Scout scarf, introduced by Lord Baden-Powell in 1908, has since become far more than just part of a uniform. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦. 𝘌𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘧 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 – 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰.

𝗔𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗿 – a simple yet meaningful reminder of their identity and the global community they’re part of.

During the 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗔𝗙𝗙-𝗥𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗧 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗣’s final get-together of the term, a special moment was shared as all the new Scouts were officially inducted into the troop.

𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀!

This marks the beginning of an exciting journey filled with adventure, learning, leadership and lifelong friendships.

𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 – 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 – 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦.

This term, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗕 explored the rich visual language of the Australian First People’s dot art, focusing on the fascinating tradition of ‘Songlines’ or ‘Dreamings.’

Inspired by her recent visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Mrs Bronwen Langmead brought back fresh ideas and insights that ignited their creative journey.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲-𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁.

It has been a meaningful way to honour an ancient tradition while making their own mark as young artists.

𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵!

This past Thursday and Friday evening, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s Primary Department (our talented Grade 5 to 7 learners) waddled into the spotlight to perform a delightful production of 𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘵, the musical!

With toe-tapping tunes, our young performers brought the Antarctic to life – complete with dazzling dance moves, heartwarming harmonies and an inspiring message about being true to yourself.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Their ability to memorise lines, perform full musical numbers and embrace the spotlight is nothing short of exceptional!

𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥.

Our junior choir and marimba band also deserved their moment in the sun (or should we say snow?) – their performances added rhythm, richness and a touch of magic to an already spectacular production.

𝗢𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲, 𝗻𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Avrille Putter and Mrs Sanette Brink, as well as their dedicated team, for managing everything from sound and lights to curtains, tech and set design.

𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘦!

Next year, it’s the seniors’ turn to take the stage – and if this performance was anything to go by, 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄!
