The u/13B team secured a fantastic 2-0 victory, while the u/13A team put on an impressive display, to beat their opponents 3 – 0.

1st Hockey Team – Spar Challenge Results

Today saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st hockey team participating in the regional leg of the 2024 ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—”๐—ฅ ๐—ฆ๐—–๐—›๐—ข๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐—š๐—œ๐—ฅ๐—Ÿ๐—ฆ’ ๐—›๐—ข๐—–๐—ž๐—˜๐—ฌ ๐—–๐—›๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ก๐—š๐—˜ contested at Kingswood College, South Africa in Makhanda.

Facing formidable opponents, the girls showcased their prowess right from the onset.

Their first encounter of the day against ๐—–๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ got them off to a good start with a 3-0 victory.

They squared off next against ๐—ฉ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—š๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—น๐˜€, the intense match resulting in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

The Union team then engaged in a riveting clash against ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ, with both sides showcasing their mettle, ultimately concluding in a deadlock, with the scoreboard frozen at 0-0.

In what turned out to be their last match of the day – a valiant effort against ๐——๐—ฆ๐—š in the semi-finals – saw the girls narrowly missing out on a spot in the final, the match concluding with a close 2-1 scoreline in favour of DSG, the eventual champions.

Mountain Bike League

This past Sunday, 5 May, saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learners Jenelle and Shana Theron participating in the Nelson Mandela Bay School District Series mountain bike league.

๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป, competing in the Sprog u/11 category, pedaled her heart out on the challenging course. Her focus, agility and sheer determination propelled her to an impressive second-place finish.

๐—๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป, riding in the Youth u/15 category, faced stiff competition from other talented cyclists. Undeterred, she pushed herself to the limit, navigating the twists and turns of the course with finesse. Jenelleโ€™s dedication paid off as she clinched a well-deserved second-place position.

Senior Rugby Results – HVS Festival

Union High School’s 1st XV rugby was privileged to be invited to the first rugby festival hosted by Hoรซr Volkskool from 1 – 4 of May 2024. 

On the first day of play, Union faced Hoรซr Middelburg from Middelburg (Eastern Cape). Poor defence and a lack of energy allowed Middelburg to put points on the board. Union however managed to score a try and we went into the half-time break 5-20 in favour of Middelburg. The second half was a different story and the Union boys finally decided that they wanted to play some proper rugby. Union managed to score an unanswered 34 points in the second and did not allow the hosts to put any points on the board. Union won the game by 39-20. 

On the last day of the Festival, Union played against Langenhoven Gymnasium from Riversdale. The boys picked up from where we left off on the first day and scored 17 points playing into a very strong wind in the first half of the game. In the second half we could only manage to score one more converted try to end the match with a 24-0 victory.ย

Their campaign kicked off on Thursday with a resounding victory over Riverdal’s Hoรซrskool Langenhoven, securing a convincing 23-12 win.

Building on this momentum, they clinched another win on Saturday, defeating Hoรซrskool Kathu with a score of 26-14.

The u/14A team secured a commanding 5-2 victory, while the u/16A side followed suit with a stellar 3-1 win. Meanwhile, the second team delivered a fantastic performance, dominating their match with an impressive 12-0 triumph.

Senior Rugby vs Muir College – Results

1St XVI MATCH REPORT

On Saturday 27 April 2024 Union’s 1st XV played against Muir College in our annual derby day. Union playing with the wind in the first half looked good on attack but could not get any points on the scoreboard in the first half. Muir however scored two tries just before half-time, taking the lead by 0-12. 

What made matters even worse for Union is that they then had to play into a strong wind in the secondย half. Muir got off to a flying start by scoring within the first minutes of the second half. Poor defence from the Union side led to Muir College scoring more tries. Union lost the game by 7-45.ย

Junior Tennis vs Karel Theron – Results

In a fun home fixture earlier this week, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 2nd junior tennis team took to the courts against Middelburg’s Karel Theron Primary School.

The Union players dominated the court, securing victories in 11 out of the 12 matches played.

First Team match report:
Unfortunately, our team struggled to adapt to this defensive approach, resulting inย numerous 50/50 ball situations. Within the first 5 minutes, Stirling was awarded aย penalty stroke due to poor defence. The girls demonstrated resilience, bouncing back with aย beautiful team goal.

The half-time score stood at an even 1-1. 

Second and Third Chukka: Despite creating numerous attacking opportunities, the first team faced formidable resistance from Stirlingโ€™s defence. Stirlingโ€™s goalkeeper played a pivotal role in keeping the ball out of the goal box. Stirling created 3 counter-attack opportunities, scoring 2 goals during this period.

In a highly anticipated annual rugby fixture, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st XV clashed with Stirling this past Saturday, 20 April, in East London.

1st XV vs Stirling:
The match kicked off with Union’s 1st XV showing immense vigour and determination, eager to secure a victory. However, a costly mistake early on allowed Stirling to pounce, securing their first try of the game and putting Union on the backfoot.

The game continued to be a seesaw battle, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for dominance. Another try by Stirling, due to a lapse in concentration, pushed the score to 17-29. Yet, Union’s spirit remained unbroken, as evidenced by Peter Michaels’ second individual try, bringing the final score to 22-29 in favour of Stirling.
