Sport Results

In Union’s T20 against Daniël Pienaar, the visiting side was first to bat, setting a target of 110. Union then took to the field and, unfortunately, only managed a total of 86. Top scorers for Union were Jude Langmead (21) and Laythan Carelse (10). Our best bowlers were Shaakir Kazi (4/15 in 3 overs) and Yaaseen Kazi (2/9 in 2 overs). Daniël Pienaar won by 25 runs.

Union’s declaration match against Lilyfontein on Thursday, 12 January, saw Union winning the match by 65 runs. Union’s top scorer was Joshua Horne with 39 runs. Best Union bowler for the day was Shaakir Kazi who took 6 wickets in 14 overs for 48 runs.

This past Saturday, 14 January, saw many of Union’s young hockey players (from prep school through to high school) learning from experienced national and provincial players during a 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗢𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗖 presented by the Karoo Hockey Club at the Union High School, Graaff-Reinet AstroTurf.

Facilitators included (among other) Protea player Cornelle Holtzhausen, provincial player Arijana Botha, as well as Old Unionites Micela Loock, Jannien van Jaarsveld, Union’s own Joy Merifield and former Volkskool 1st team captain Inge van Rooyen.

In addition to working on their technical skills, the youngsters were taught hockey-related exercises and given sound advice which they can take to the field this coming hockey season.

During the holidays some of our Union tennis players competed in the 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗣𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 in Graaff-Reinet.

A big congratulations to Union’s 1st XI vice-captain Shaakir Kazi on his 𝟲-𝗪𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗨𝗟 against East London’s Lilyfontein during Union High School’s Annual Senior Cricket Festival.

He ended with the figures: 14 overs – 6 wickets – 48 runs.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learner 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗸𝗲, who completed his very first triathlon successfully this past weekend.

Hosted in Gqbergha on Saturday, 14 January, the Nelson Mandela Bay Triathlon Championships saw Ben compete in the Youth Category, which entails a 350m sea swim, a 10km cycle, and finally, a 2.5km run (sprint!).

Afterwards he claimed to find the sea-swim ‘exhilarating’ and his body ‘exhausted’, but he would definitely do it again!

Several of our Union High School, Graaff-Reinet junior swimmers competed in the 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥-𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗦 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔 on Tuesday, 1 November, where the top swimmers in the Karoo, Albany and Amathola districts gather annually to test their mettle in the water.

𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘥, 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘻𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘴. They were awarded their medals at this morning’s whole-school assembly.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼:

• 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻 – 3rd in both Girls u/11 50m Backstroke and Breaststroke, 1st in Girls u/11 4x50m Medley Relay and 2nd in Girls u/11 4x50m Freestyle Relay.

• 𝗔𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗮𝗿𝘀𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗱 – 2nd in Boys u/11 50m Freestyle and 1st in both Boys u/11 4x50m Medley and Freestyle Relays.

• 𝗭𝗼ë 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 – 3rd in both Girls u/12 4x50m Medley and Freestyle Relays.

• 𝗔𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 – 2nd in Girls u/12 50m Butterfly, 3rd in both Girls u/12 4x50m Medley and Freestyle Relays.

• 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻 – 3rd in Boys u/12 50m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle, 1st in Boys u/12 4x50m Medley Relay and 2nd in Boys u/12 4x50m Freestyle Relay.

For generations, the traditional derby days between Union High School, Graaff-Reinet and Hoër Volkskool Graaff-Reinet that conclude the winter and summer sporting seasons have served as the annual highlights of friendship, rivalry and competition for these two schools.

• A special word of 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 goes to Ben Lemke who set a new record of 2:24,89 in the Boys u/14 800m event!

On Saturday, 29 October, the Union Schools attended the first B Age Group Gala of the swimming season in Gqeberha, with 17 of our prep, middle and high school swimmers competing.

Taking into consideration that they have only had two practices in the school’s newly renovated swimming pool to prepare themselves, they delivered some fine results and finishes.

This past weekend saw some of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s top junior boys and girls tennis players represent their school at MatchPoint Tennis Academy’s annual 𝗝𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗬𝗡 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 contested in Graaff-Reinet.

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙖𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙗𝙤𝙨𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙡𝙤𝙚𝙢𝙛𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙬𝙤 𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙨.

As is always the case at this tournament, the competition was very strong, but all our players rose to the challenge and played very good tennis. It was a great experience and the players certainly benefitted by being exposed to tennis of such a high standard.

Both teams ended 5th upon conclusion of play.
