Interprovincial Biathlon

The following Union biathletes represented the Eastern Province at the 25th EP Interprovincial on, Sunday, 30 October, in Gqeberha, where they ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™ ๐™–๐™œ๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™๐™ก๐™š๐™ฉ๐™š๐™จ ๐™›๐™ง๐™ค๐™ข ๐™Ž๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™ฃ ๐™๐™ง๐™š๐™š ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š, ๐˜ฝ๐™ค๐™ง๐™™๐™š๐™ง ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™€๐™™๐™š๐™ฃ. These learners have shown such grit and determination in both their training and their racing, and weโ€™re thrilled to see the fruits of their labour paying off.

Union extends a heartfelt ๐—ช๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—— ๐—ข๐—™ ๐—ง๐—›๐—”๐—ก๐—ž๐—ฆ to their coach, Mrs Claire Lemke, and the parents of these learners who supported their children in both the holiday training schedule and the long distances that they travel in order to cheer the whole team on.

Senior Tennis vs Harvest Christian School

UHS first senior boys’ and girls’ tennis teams had a most enjoyable morning’s tennis against a visiting Harvest Christian School from Gqeberha today, Saturday, 22 October.

๐™๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™–๐™ก๐™ก 16 ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™˜๐™๐™š๐™จ ๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™–๐™ฎ๐™š๐™™, however, many individual matches were closely contested and tennis of a good standard was played overall.

The encounter was concluded with a quick dip in Union’s newly lengthened swimming pool.

U/12 Interprovincial Rugby

๐—ข๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜…๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป, a Grade 6 learner at Union High School โ€“ was recently selected to be part of the Eastern Province rugby teams that participated at the 2022 u/12 Interprovincial Rugby Tournament held at Oakdale Landbouskool in Riversdale from 29 September to 1 October.

Owen served as vice-captain of his team โ€“ the EP Elephants โ€“ who took the field against the Western Province, Boland and SWD during the course of the tournament.

Rising Star Tennis Tournament

This past Saturday, 1 October, Unionโ€™s u/16 girlsโ€™ tennis team, consisting of ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ ๐—™๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ, ๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ต-๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต ๐—ž๐—ผ๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด, ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜‡๐—ฎ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น and ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ฑรฉ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜† participated in the Eastern Cape Provincial Finals of the Tennis South Africa, BNP Paribas Rising Star Tennis Tournament, hosted by Kingswood College.

The Girlsโ€™ draw consisted of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet, Despatch High, Stirling High, Clarendon High and Kingswood College. ๐™€๐™–๐™˜๐™ ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™ฌ๐™ค ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ก๐™š๐™จ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š ๐™™๐™ค๐™ช๐™—๐™ก๐™š๐™จ ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™˜๐™.

Our girls performed admirably and after a wonderful day of tennis โ€“ and what turned out to be the closest provincial tournament in recent memory – our girls finished 5th overall.

๐—•๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ง ๐—ข๐—™ ๐—Ÿ๐—จ๐—–๐—ž to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet rugby player, Keanu Linch, who has been selected to represent the Eastern Province as part of their u/13 7s team that is currently competing in the National u/13 Sevens Tournament, which kicked off on Thursday, 29 September and will continue until Saturday, 1 October at Hoรซrskool Sentraal in Bloemfontein.

Five Wicket Haul for Jude!

๐—–๐—ข๐—ก๐—š๐—ฅ๐—”๐—ง๐—จ๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ง๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก๐—ฆ to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet cricketer, Jude Langmead, on walking away with the match ball after his first five wicket haul for the school’s first cricket team during a recent encounter against Hoรซrskool Brandwag.

The match saw Jude bowl 9 overs, taking 5 wickets for 20 runs with no extras.

Cricket: U/13 vs Muir

On Saturday, 24 September, Union High Schoolโ€™s ๐—จ/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—” ๐—–๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—–๐—ž๐—˜๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ hosted Muir College for a 40-over encounter.

Union lost the toss and was sent to bowl first. Muirโ€™s batsmen got off to a very decent start, managing a run-rate of about 10 an over for the better part of their innings. Union’s bowlers, however, managed to bring that down by taking wickets at regular intervals, resulting in Muir making a total of 155.

Unionโ€™s best bowlers were ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐— ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜† (2 wickets), ๐—ข๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜…๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป (2 wickets) and ๐—๐—ผ๐—ต๐—ป-๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด (3 wickets).

The Union side then went in to bat, but got off to a bad start, losing their top order with only 24 runs on the board.

The great thing about biathlon is that the participants may run with several different age groups, but it is their OWN time that is important, not winning or losing a particular race. This first event allowed Union’s biathlon team to get both a running and swimming time on record in order for them to now try and beat that time at every following event.

๐™๐™๐™š ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ฌ๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™ข๐™š๐™™ “๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™ซ๐™š๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ข” ๐™™๐™ž๐™™ ๐™๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ช๐™™, with great manners and sportsmanship, and fantastic running results, most notably Luvela Makaula and Qhama Solomon who ran fantastic times to take first and second place respectively in the u/15 boys running category.

๐™๐™๐™š ๐™œ๐™ž๐™ง๐™ก๐™จ ๐™–๐™ก๐™ก ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™š๐™จ and mention must be made of Miley Burger and Samantha Gilfillian who, for the first time, had to run 800m – a hard sprint twice around the track!

The swimming was held at Brylin – Independent Learning Centreโ€™s 50m indoor pool, and our athletes did very well considering they haven’t been able to train throughout the winter. They held their own, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, with two of our athletes improving on their past times (Ben and Taylor)!
