The following Union biathletes represented the Eastern Province at the 25th EP Interprovincial on, Sunday, 30 October, in Gqeberha, where they 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙣 𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝘽𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙀𝙙𝙚𝙣. These learners have shown such grit and determination in both their training and their racing, and we’re thrilled to see the fruits of their labour paying off.

Union extends a heartfelt 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to their coach, Mrs Claire Lemke, and the parents of these learners who supported their children in both the holiday training schedule and the long distances that they travel in order to cheer the whole team on.

Congratulations to cricketers, 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 and 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗶, on being selected to represent the Eastern Province at the Inter-Regional Tournament, being held from 2 to 7 December in Johannesburg.

𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 (left) has been included in the u/13B side and 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 (right) in the u/13A side.

UHS first senior boys’ and girls’ tennis teams had a most enjoyable morning’s tennis against a visiting Harvest Christian School from Gqeberha today, Saturday, 22 October.

𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙡 16 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙙, however, many individual matches were closely contested and tennis of a good standard was played overall.

The encounter was concluded with a quick dip in Union’s newly lengthened swimming pool.

Top 3 Junior tennis girls played an away encounter against Somerset East’s Gill Primary School this afternoon, Wednesday, 12 October.

𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻, a Grade 6 learner at Union High School – was recently selected to be part of the Eastern Province rugby teams that participated at the 2022 u/12 Interprovincial Rugby Tournament held at Oakdale Landbouskool in Riversdale from 29 September to 1 October.

Owen served as vice-captain of his team – the EP Elephants – who took the field against the Western Province, Boland and SWD during the course of the tournament.

This past Saturday, 1 October, Union’s u/16 girls’ tennis team, consisting of 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮, 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝘁𝗮𝗵-𝗟𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗞𝗼𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴, 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹 and 𝗦𝗮𝗱é 𝗠𝗮𝘆 participated in the Eastern Cape Provincial Finals of the Tennis South Africa, BNP Paribas Rising Star Tennis Tournament, hosted by Kingswood College.

The Girls’ draw consisted of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet, Despatch High, Stirling High, Clarendon High and Kingswood College. 𝙀𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙬𝙤 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝.

Our girls performed admirably and after a wonderful day of tennis – and what turned out to be the closest provincial tournament in recent memory – our girls finished 5th overall.

𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗨𝗖𝗞 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet rugby player, Keanu Linch, who has been selected to represent the Eastern Province as part of their u/13 7s team that is currently competing in the National u/13 Sevens Tournament, which kicked off on Thursday, 29 September and will continue until Saturday, 1 October at Hoërskool Sentraal in Bloemfontein.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet cricketer, Jude Langmead, on walking away with the match ball after his first five wicket haul for the school’s first cricket team during a recent encounter against Hoërskool Brandwag.

The match saw Jude bowl 9 overs, taking 5 wickets for 20 runs with no extras.

On Saturday, 24 September, Union High School’s 𝗨/𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 hosted Muir College for a 40-over encounter.

Union lost the toss and was sent to bowl first. Muir’s batsmen got off to a very decent start, managing a run-rate of about 10 an over for the better part of their innings. Union’s bowlers, however, managed to bring that down by taking wickets at regular intervals, resulting in Muir making a total of 155.

Union’s best bowlers were 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 (2 wickets), 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻 (2 wickets) and 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻-𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 (3 wickets).

The Union side then went in to bat, but got off to a bad start, losing their top order with only 24 runs on the board.

𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 managed to build a few partnerships, but the Union side eventually fell short by 43 runs with 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 being the best batsman, scoring 50 not out.

This past Saturday, 24 September, Union had a strong team of 14 𝗕𝗜𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗦 participating in the second meet of the season in Gqeberha.

𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 ‘𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘰 𝘬𝘪𝘥𝘴’ 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘹𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

The great thing about biathlon is that the participants may run with several different age groups, but it is their OWN time that is important, not winning or losing a particular race. This first event allowed Union’s biathlon team to get both a running and swimming time on record in order for them to now try and beat that time at every following event.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙬𝙡𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙚𝙙 “𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙢” 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙙, with great manners and sportsmanship, and fantastic running results, most notably Luvela Makaula and Qhama Solomon who ran fantastic times to take first and second place respectively in the u/15 boys running category.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙧𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 and mention must be made of Miley Burger and Samantha Gilfillian who, for the first time, had to run 800m – a hard sprint twice around the track!

The swimming was held at Brylin – Independent Learning Centre’s 50m indoor pool, and our athletes did very well considering they haven’t been able to train throughout the winter. They held their own, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, with two of our athletes improving on their past times (Ben and Taylor)!
