On Saturday the 25th of May 2024, Union’s 1st XV travelled to Uitenhage ( Kariega) to play against Bergsig. 

Bergsig got off to a flying start by scoring the first try and taking the lead. Union got a penalty and decided to take the three points. Bergsig however managed to break the Union defence on several more opportunities and extending their lead. Bergsig won the game by 3-45.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior sports teams faced off against a visiting Herbert Hurd side this past Saturday.

The 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗕 𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 15-10. The 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 gave it their all until the very last minute but, despite their impressive efforts, they narrowly lost to the Herbert Hurd side with a score of 17-24.

Switching gears to hockey, Union’s 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗗 and 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗖 teams displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship, although they both faced tough opponents and were narrowly defeated with a score of 0-1 in each match.

The 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗕 and 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗔 hockey teams delivered outstanding performances, bringing home two victories for Union. The u/13B team dominated the field with an impressive 6-0 win, while the u/13A team showcased their skills and secured a solid 2-0 victory.

Fourteen junior and senior chess players from Union High School, Graaff-Reinet are representing their school with pride at the 2024 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 being held in Jeffrey’s Bay this weekend.

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘩 𝘉𝘢𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯.

The Union team is composed of some of the school’s top chess talent, spanning both junior and senior grades.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s rugby teams traveled to Woodridge College in Gqeberha this past Saturday for their annual rugby derby, a much-anticipated event following last year’s narrow defeat.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 1𝙨𝙩 𝙓𝙑 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝, 𝙖𝙨 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙒𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚’𝙨 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩-𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚.

The match started with Woodridge College taking the lead, scoring 19 points by halftime despite Union’s dominance in possession and territory. 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 0-19 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬.

However, the second half saw a remarkable turnaround for Union’s 1st XV. They tightened their play, executing their structure and set pieces effectively. This newfound cohesion led to Union’s first points through a maul try. Momentum built, and Union scored three more tries. Despite failing to convert these tries, Union’s tally reached 20 points, overtaking Woodridge’s 19 points.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝟮𝟬-𝟭𝟵 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.

Other matches saw mixed results for Union:

• U16: Union 15 – 12 Woodridge

In a nail-biting encounter, the Union High Schools U16A rugby team faced off against Woodridge College. The game was closely contested, with both teams giving their all. As the clock ticked down, Union found themselves trailing by just four points. Woodridge College was on the attack, putting immense pressure on the U16A defence. In a dramatic turn of events, we managed to regain possession of the ball. With determination and skill, they orchestrated a beautiful try. Josh Arends ran a brilliant line, crossing the try line to secure victory for the team. Similo Mvandaba sealed the deal with a drop kick conversion.

The final whistle blew, and the team celebrated their hard-fought win. It was a testament to their teamwork, resilience, and unwavering spirit.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet extends heartfelt congratulations to u/13 hockey players Logan Marais, Abonani Matushe and Maribel April for their outstanding achievement of being selected to represent the 𝗘𝗣 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗦.

Logan and Abonani have earned their places in the A side, meanwhile, Maribel’s selection for the B team underscores her prowess on the field.

As they embark on this exciting journey, representing both their province and school in the forthcoming interprovincial tournaments, we wish them the very best.

On Saturday 11 May Union High School’s 1st XV rugby travelled to Burgersdorp for our annual rugby fixture against Hoërskool Burgersdorp. It is always a tough game against the hosts and Saturday’s game proved it again. Union took the lead by converting a penalty kick after applying pressure on Burgersdorp. The opposition then managed to score to a try through a mistake and poor defense from the Union team. Union managed to once again slot two more penalty kicks and Burgersdorp scored one more try in the 1st half going into the half-time break 9-12 in favour of Burgersdorp. 

In the 2nd half the Union team managed to put the opposition under pressure through good structural play but we could just not get any more points on the board. Burgersdorp scored two more tries and won the match 9- 26.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet was buzzing with excitement on Friday afternoon as we welcomed Framesby’s hockey girls to our campus for an afternoon of fierce competition.

In a closely contested encounter, the 𝘂/𝟭𝟰𝗔 teams drew 1-1, while the 𝘂/𝟭𝟲𝗔𝘀 match was equally intense, with the Union side putting up a valiant effort but ultimately falling short with a 2-3 loss against Framesby.

However, it was the 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 that truly stole the show, proving themselves to be a force to be reckoned with. 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 with a commanding 4-1 win over Framesby’s 1st team.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior rugby teams had an outstanding morning as they faced off against Kingswood Junior School at home.

The 𝘂/𝟭𝟭𝗔 team enjoyed a 37-5 victory, while the 𝘂/𝟭𝟯𝗔 team also delivered a strong performance, securing a 33-5 win.

The u/13B team secured a fantastic 2-0 victory, while the u/13A team put on an impressive display, to beat their opponents 3 – 0.

Today saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st hockey team participating in the regional leg of the 2024 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗚𝗜𝗥𝗟𝗦’ 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗘 contested at Kingswood College, South Africa in Makhanda.

Facing formidable opponents, the girls showcased their prowess right from the onset.

Their first encounter of the day against 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸 got them off to a good start with a 3-0 victory.

They squared off next against 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, the intense match resulting in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

The Union team then engaged in a riveting clash against 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱, with both sides showcasing their mettle, ultimately concluding in a deadlock, with the scoreboard frozen at 0-0.

In what turned out to be their last match of the day – a valiant effort against 𝗗𝗦𝗚 in the semi-finals – saw the girls narrowly missing out on a spot in the final, the match concluding with a close 2-1 scoreline in favour of DSG, the eventual champions.
