Boarding is a happy and contented way of life for many of our learners.

The Union Schools’ offers co-educational boarding from Grade 1 right through to Grade 12, with options for weekly, termly and casual boarding.

Grade 1 - 4 boarders are accommodated in Max Kroon House, Grade 5 - 12 Weekly boarders in Herby Arnott House and Grade 5 - 12 Termly boarders in Arthur Kingwill House.

All three houses have separate boys’ and girls’ wings with spacious common rooms, game rooms and extensive grounds and sports facilities that provide the necessary break-out spaces for busy and active children.

An experienced and dedicated team of boarding staff creates a warm and caring atmosphere across all three boarding houses, offering round the clock support to ensure the learners feel at home.

Each house has been structured in such a way that it offers its boarders a comfortable home-away-from-home where they can feel a sense of belonging, make friends and enjoy their school years fully immersed in Union's vibrant campus life. This enables learners to flourish at a time in their life when they are making great leaps in their academic, physical and emotional development.

A brief history

In 1939 an important milestone was reached at Union High when Mr Bernie Pitman started a hostel at 83 Somerset Street, the first official school hostel for boys. This attracted more boys to the School, resulting in increased stability, and UHS started burgeoning forth as a force with which to be reckoned.

Prior to this, boys had boarded privately with firstly, the Hillyard's at 40 Cradock Street and then in Stockenstroom Street, the Roberts's in Market square, the Fouche's and the Mackay's.

Mr. Dodd took over from the Pitman's when they left in 1946, and was followed by Mr. Arnott. The latter spent all his time in the hostel, and moved with the boys to Arthur Kingwill House when it was constructed in memory of past learners who served in World War II in 1953, a momentous event in the life of the School. Hoffie Hofmeyr ran a small hostel in Bourke Street (Atholl House).

In 1959, Herby Arnott House was built to serve as a boarding establishment for girls at the school.

Between then and 2020, the two boarding establishments, Arthur Kingwill House and Herby Arnott House, served the school as its girls’ hostel and the school’s boys’ hostel respectively.

In what has been one of the most significant developments at Union High School in recent times, the school officially reopened its two boarding houses as co-ed establishments on Monday, 1 March 2021 - Herby Arnott House as a Grade 5 - 12 co-educational weekly boarding house and Arthur Kingwill House as a termly co-educational boarding house for Grade 5 - 12 learners.

Both boarding houses now offer Union High School’s boarders a modern, vibrant and age-appropriate co-ed experience.
