There are some businesses in a town that become part of the rhythm of everyday life – the places people pop into for the essentials, the familiar faces behind the counters, the stores that quietly help keep homes running and communities connected. For around 30 years, SPAR has been one of those constants in Graaff-Reinet.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet is deeply grateful to continue our 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 series by recognising the support of 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘂 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥 and 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥.

Today the stores are owned by 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗸𝗶𝗲 and 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗲𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗲, whose leadership reflects a deep commitment not only to good business, but to the wellbeing of the community around them. Together, the two stores employ 115 people from Graaff-Reinet – 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘰 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴; 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴, 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯.

Recently, Union hockey girls 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲 and 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻 popped in to personally thank the SPAR team for coming on board in support of the girls’ journey through Goals for Good.

What makes this partnership especially touching is the charity SPAR has chosen to support: the 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. For 53 years, this remarkable local association has been serving cancer patients and their families with compassion, dedication and quiet strength. Made up of volunteers, the organisation walks alongside patients on what can be an incredibly difficult journey, offering practical help such as meals and linen, while qualified counsellors provide emotional and psychological support when it is needed most.

They also assist with travel and accommodation for patients who need to leave town for treatment – easing some of the burden during an already overwhelming time. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱, 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁.

That is what makes the Goals for Good campaign so special. It is about more than goals scored on a hockey field. It is about linking the energy and determination of young sportswomen with the generous hearts of local businesses and the important work of charities that care for the people of Graaff-Reinet.

On behalf of Union High School and our 1st team hockey girls, we extend our 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗙𝗘𝗟𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to Frikkie and Martinette Coetzee, and to the teams at Spandau SuperSPAR and Camdeboo SPAR, for their generosity, their faith in our girls and their continued investment in the community we are so proud to call home

If you’ve lived in Graaff-Reinet for any length of time, chances are you’ve walked through the doors of Xipe Totec Technologies (XTT Graaff-Reinet) at some point – perhaps to stock up on school stationery or even (for those who remember!) buy a stack of blank CDs back in the day.

What many people may not realise is that this trusted local business is celebrating a remarkable milestone this year: 𝟮𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Union High School is delighted to continue our 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 series by recognising the generous support of XTT – a business that, much like our own schools, has grown and adapted alongside the community it serves.

Founded a quarter of a century ago, XTT has witnessed enormous changes in both technology and retail. From the days when thousands of blank CDs flew off the shelves to the modern digital world we live in today, the business has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of its customers. Throughout it all, one thing has remained constant: 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀.

Stationery has always been at the heart of the business, making XTT a familiar stop for countless Union learners and families over the years. More recently, the store has expanded its offering to include a range of premium cleaning chemicals suitable for homes, businesses, and schools – another example of how the team continues to innovate and respond to the needs of the community.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘟𝘛𝘛 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Through their pledge, XTT is supporting Clean Trade, a registered Public Benefit Organisation founded by Graaff-Reinet locals Elaine Stanley and Tia-Mari Jacobs. Clean Trade is doing important work in our town by tackling environmental pollution while also helping to address hunger – a powerful reminder that community upliftment can take many forms.

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗫𝗧𝗧 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 and warmly encourage locals to visit their modern new store at 𝟴𝟵 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 – where friendly service, sound advice and a genuine commitment to Graaff-Reinet continue to define this trusted local name.

Some supporters don’t just cheer from the sidelines – they are part of the journey long before the first whistle blows. For many of Union’s hockey girls, the familiar faces of the team at Dentists at Health – Graaff-Reinet are just as likely to be seen supporting them at the astro as they are welcoming patients at their practice.

𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟰, the practice has steadily grown into a trusted name in dental care, known for combining professional expertise with genuine care for the wellbeing of its patients.

The accomplished team at the practice is led by 𝗗𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝘇𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗭𝘆𝗹, 𝗗𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗲𝘀 and 𝗗𝗿 𝗘𝗹𝗿𝗶ë𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝘆𝘀𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻, whose dedication to their patients has made Dentist@Health a familiar and reassuring presence in the community.

The girls had an extra reason to smile – quite literally – as 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁@𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵, their trusted dental practitioners.

Through their involvement in the campaign, Dentist@Health has chosen to support ACVV Huis van de Graaff, a local home for the aged that provides care and dignity to elderly residents in our community. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲’𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁.

On behalf of Union High School and our 1st team hockey girls, 𝘄𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 to the entire Dentist@Health team for their generosity, their community spirit and their continued support of both the girls on the field and the people of Graaff-Reinet.

Some businesses keep a town moving in ways that people hardly even notice – quietly ensuring that every school run and family journey begins safely.

For many motorists in Graaff-Reinet, that reassurance has long come from the familiar team at Supa Quick Tyre Experts Graaff Reinet.

Union is proud to continue our 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 series by acknowledging the generous support of this well-known family business, which has been part of the fabric of the town for decades.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆. The business was originally purchased in 1974 by Mr Putter’s father from Mr Taylor-Freeme, grandfather of Noel Taylor-Freeme. In 1977, Mr Putter’s late older brother Wilhelm took over the reins, continuing to grow the business with dedication and care.

In 1986 the business became one of the first SupaQuick dealers in South Africa and this year SupaQuick Graaff-Reinet proudly celebrates 40 years as part of the SupaQuick network – 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺-𝘳𝘶𝘯 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴.

At the heart of the business is a simple philosophy: “𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦”. Built on values of integrity, engagement and genuine care, SupaQuick has created a place where clients often become friends.

Through the Goals for Good initiative, SupaQuick Graaff-Reinet has chosen to support Clean Trade – a local organisation doing important work to promote recycling, reduce pollution and help address food insecurity in our community.

On behalf of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet and our 1st team hockey girls, we extend our 𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to Mr Dawie Putter and the entire SupaQuick Graaff-Reinet team for their generosity, their long-standing service to our town and their support of a campaign that continues to bring our community together

Some connections to a school never truly fade.

Even when careers and paths lead in different directions, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗱 – and a continued desire to support the place where so many young lives are shaped.

That is certainly true for 𝗠𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗱, a short-term insurance broker at the GBG Group (Graaff-Reinet), who has chosen to support our 1st team hockey girls’ 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 initiative.

Many within the Union community are familiar with Mr Lombard from his years at the school, where he served as both an educator and sports administrator. Although his career has since taken him into the world of insurance, we are grateful that the Union learners still holds a special place in his heart. 𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭.

Pictured here with team newcomers 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 and 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲, Mr Lombard’s involvement is a reminder that the Union family extends far beyond the school gates.

In a fitting reflection of his compassion for the wider community, 𝗠𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 the Graaff-Reinet Animal Welfare Society ( GRAWS ) – an organisation that works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned, neglected and stray animals in Graaff-Reinet.

𝘖𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 1𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴, 𝘸𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘔𝘳 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘺 𝘎𝘙𝘈𝘞𝘚
