Class Of 2021 Valedictory

The annual Valedictory Speech – which was this year delivered by Union High School’s outgoing Head Boy, Kyle-Luke du Preez – was a goodbye speech, but also a โ€œLook at what weโ€™ve doneโ€ moment.
And what our Class of 2021 have done has been nothing short of miraculous.
From the start of their Grade 11 year, to the end of their Grade 12 year, their schooling experience was masked and distanced, tracked and tested, and always a small coronavirus outbreak away from everyone being sent home.
So, yes, ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ to all that. But also . . . look at what theyโ€™ve done.
As uncertainty swirled around them, they stayed focused. They adapted their learning. They finished their assignments. They passed their tests. They supported one another. They gutted and gritted it out even when the end seemed out of reach.
Off into the future you go. Your minds filled with academic knowledge eager to acquire more and share your skills with others. Your hearts brimming with compassion, patience, understanding, kindness, humility and faith.
We are sad to say goodbye but grateful that our paths have crossed and hopeful for what you will become. Strive to bring joy and comfort to those you meet on your journey through life because when you serve and uplift othersโ€ฆ you will find contentment and joy.
Matrics, your education is only beginning.
Live in this world with an open heart to embrace others with compassion; live in this world with an open mind willing to learn new things; live in this world to end oppression; live in this world with a grateful heart and live in this world with open eyes to see the splendours of God’s creation.

Union High School held its annual prizegiving ceremony for its Primary Department (Grade 5 to 7 learners) on Wednesday morning, 20 October.
The event is one of the most important days in the schoolโ€™s calendar which is long-awaited by everyone – educators and learners alike.
Before learners were presented with different awards as per their performance and achievement, they were addressed by the departmental head of the Primary Department, Mrs Evette Cloete.
In her address, Mrs Cloete emphasized that the prizegiving ceremony is a significant moment in which to celebrate the assiduousness and hard work of the learners across all subjects and extra-mural activities.
โ€œThe schoolโ€™s annual prize-giving ceremony is that moment of the year in which we recognise our top achievers as well as encouraging others to take their studies seriously, so that next year they could be counted amongst outstanding learnersโ€, said Mrs Cloete.
The event also featured delightful performances by two of the primary departmentโ€™s pianists, Taegen Hamid and Katelyn Trollip.
Then came the moment that everyone had been waiting for – the presentation of awards.
Although the ceremony saw numerous awards presented to learners across all subjects and grades, the climax of the event was the presentation of the Old Unionite Shield for the Dux learner which was this year awarded to Grade 7 learner, Katelyn Trollip, who received a big round of applause from her peers and all present in the hall.
It is our firm hope that the time following the prizegiving ceremony will be well-spent by learners and educators alike, as they conclude the yearโ€™s work.
