Union High School proudly hosted the 2026 ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ข๐ฅ ๐๐ก๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐๐ข๐ข๐๐ฆ ๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฆ meet yesterday afternoon, welcoming Volkskool for a good old-fashioned afternoon of school sport.
Our sports grounds were filled with excited young athletes, lined up to compete and giving their best in every race and event, while families and friends cheered them on from the sidelines.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet proudly acknowledges the outstanding achievement of one of our young chess players, ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ต.
In December 2025, Caron represented his province at the Mzansi Inter-Regional Youth Chess Championship (MIYCC), where he competed against 125 of the countryโs top u14 chess players. Through consistent focus over the course of the tournament, Caron achieved an impressive 12th place finish, earning him a position in the prestigious Grand Prix Top 20.
๐๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐น๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ, Caron has been invited to participate in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship (SAJCCC), which will take place from 28 March to 2 April in Rustenburg. He will be the only u14 player representing the Eastern Province at this national event.

We are proud to see so many Union boys actively involved in the 1st Graaff-Reinet Scout Troop and taking part in special traditions such as the annual ‘Trestle Race’.

The Dr Beyers Naudรฉ Local Municipalityโs ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐ง๐ผ๐ฝ ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ ceremony, held on Monday morning, 26 January, celebrated the outstanding achievements of the regionโs top learners.
Union High School, Graaff-Reinetโs top matric candidate from the 2025 NSC examinations, ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ๐๐น๐, had the honour of addressing an audience of fellow achievers, parents, politicians and officials from both the municipality and the Department of Education.
During the ceremony, Erin was announced as the highest-achieving matric in the municipal region, with fellow Union learner ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ ๐ฃ๐ผ๐ป๐ด๐ผ๐บ๐ฎ proudly claiming second place.
Our Top 6 boysโ and girlsโ tennis players took to the courts in challenging, windy conditions as they competed in both singles and doubles against a visiting Cradock High School this afternoon.

๐๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ produced a superb spell against Stirling High School, claiming an impressive 5 wickets for just 30 runs in his 7 overs. ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ was simply sensational against Westering High School, taking a remarkable 7 wickets for only 18 runs in 7 overs. Adding to the accolades, ๐๐ผ๐๐ต ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐๐ถ๐น๐น delivered a true all-round performance against Westering, finishing with 5 wickets for 18 runs in 9.3 overs and then backing it up with a well-earned 56 runs with the bat.

1st TEAM REPORT
Union High School 1st XI faced the Old Boys in a 50-over match. The Old Boys set a formidable total of 396, with standout batting from Jonathan Crankshaw (155) and Michael Biggs (106). Best Union High bowling came from Yaaseen Kazi (10 overs, 2 maidens, 38 runs) and Sibabalwe Mbutye (3 wickets).
In reply, Union High struggled against disciplined bowling, but young Callum Jacobs showed great determination, scoring 88. Old Boysโ Carl Bezuidenhout impressed with 3 wickets for just 10 runs in 5 overs.
U15 REPORT
Union bowled first and managed to restrict the Old boys to 187. A good bowling performance by all the bowlers. Union then went in to bat and made a good chase managing to come with in 30runs of the target.ย But unfortunately fell short.
Union lost by 27 runs. Special mention to Dante Mills 29, Ryan collet 19.

2nd Team Report
The Old Boys posted a commanding 303 all out in 37.4 overs, driven by a strong top-order performance. For Union High, Warren Barlow (2/46) and Carl Veriel (3/36) provided the key breakthroughs, briefly slowing the scoring.
In reply, Union High 2nd XI struggled to build momentum and were dismissed for 80. A special mention goes to Qhama Jacobs for his determined 25 runs.

Our 1st hockey team had the wonderful opportunity to ๐ฑ๐๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐๐๐ this past Friday afternoon with a friendly match against the 2026 Foundersโ team.

Our girls rose to the challenge and secured a solid 7-0 win against a formidable side, making it a lovely and encouraging start to the year for our hockey team.
During the prizegiving ceremony at the end of the day’s play, the award for the day’s best defender went to Katelyn Trollip, with the best goal being awarded to Leigh-Ann Murray.
