Senior Interschools Athletics

On Wednesday afternoon, 25 October, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Grade 8 to 12 athletes participated in the annual Senior Interschools Athletics event held at Hoër Volkskool.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀.

In a tightly contested afternoon, the final scores saw Union accumulate 742 points to Volkskool’s 731 points. 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵!

We would like to recognise Camran Swartz as Union’s 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬. Camran managed to secure first places in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Additionally, he also claimed third place in the Long Jump event. Well done, Camran!

We’d also like to acknowledge the performances of Qhama Solomon, Luvelo Makaula and Xavier Barlow, who achieved numerous podium positions and contributed significantly to Union’s success.

On the girls’ side, Charlize Vorster deserves special recognition for her outstanding contribution of points, which played a crucial role in Union’s victory. We also applaud Tara Ferreira, Joy Merifield and Ambesiwi Tokwe for making their mark and showcasing their talent.

𝙊𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣, 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨. You have represented Union with pride and we couldn’t be happier!

Jocelyn Marais Tennis Tournament

This past weekend saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Top 4 junior girls and boys tennis players participating in the annual 𝗝𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 in Graaff-Reinet.

The girls’ team competed against formidable opponents from Stellenbosch, Worcester and Cradock in the group stage, emerging victorious in all their encounters to finish at the top of their group.

𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙚. Despite their valiant efforts, they narrowly missed out on a win, settling for a well-deserved second place in the tournament.

The junior boys’ team faced opponents from Stirling, Stellenbosch C and Cradock in the group stages. They managed to secure a commendable second place in their group.

In the battle for third and fourth place, the boys engaged in an encounter against Stellenbosch B. Although they fought gallantly, they narrowly missed out on claiming the third spot, ultimately securing a respectable fourth place in the competition.

This incredible opportunity will take Chanté and Aidan on an unforgettable journey to England, where they will immerse themselves in a new culture and educational experience.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 2023 Head Girl 𝗖𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 on emerging victorious in the Grade 12 English Home Language division of the national final of The South African Literacy Association’s Public Speaking Competition.

Philosophy Club 2023

“The Philosophy Club is an ever-growing community of free-thinking learners, with a leadership framework that tends to take a laissez-faire approach to engaging in thought provoking discussions about various topics within philosophical parameters.

More than anything else, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮 𝘾𝙡𝙪𝙗 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙄 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙢𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 and am glad that I have had the privilege of actively contributing and being commended for my service to the club through various means.

I am the first recipient of the prestigious Philosophy Club team award, and it is an honour to wear the inaugural scroll on my blazer, but that is dwarfed by the meaning of the Philosophy Club in my life.

Many factors have impacted how my character has been moulded over my very few years within the Union Schools, but most of those factors would be miniscule in comparison to the Philosophy Club’s impact on my life.

The Philosophy Club’s approach to assertively and clearly expressing your opinions whilst being respectful and understanding of others, has come to shape how I interact with anyone I speak to and will speak to for the rest of my life.

The privilege of being able to speak your mind freely with the intention of providing value to a discussion has been a platform I have needed multiple times in my life and stumbling my way into this incredible community at the age of 14 may have been the most relevant moment of my ongoing life at Union Schools.

𝘼 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙅𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙍𝙤𝙨𝙚-𝙄𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙖𝙭 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮 𝘾𝙡𝙪𝙗’𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙨 𝙫𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙚, and paving the way for me to be the current president of this club. An even warmer message of gratitude must be given to Mrs Hanli Rose-Innes for her efforts in upholding the structures and initial purposes of the club from its inception up until this point and always being willing to offer a helping hand.

The Philosophy Club is and will continue being one of the most innovative communities in the history of the Union schools, and having been part of helping to add even more structure onto the creation of some of the smartest thinkers I have ever met has been nothing short of a privilege.”

Cancer Awareness

𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿

This week has seen Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s learners supporting the national cancer awareness drive associated with the month of October, by purchasing ribbons representing different cancers and pinning them to the school’s notice boards in honour of loved ones affected by the disease.

Junior Interschools Athletics

The recent Interschools’ athletics meet, contested by the Grade 1 to 7 learners of Union and Volkskool on Monday afternoon, 23 October, saw several records being broken.

Six of these new records were set by Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s Grade 5 to 7 athletes.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to the following new 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦:

– Boys u/11 Shotput: 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁é 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 surpassed the previous record of 8.77 meters by achieving a remarkable throw of 9.46 meters.

– Girls u/11 100m and High Jump: 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗞𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮-𝗞𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘇𝗮 proved her versatility in both sprinting and high jump. She improved the 100m record from 14.57 seconds to an impressive 14.44 seconds. Additionally, she raised the bar in the High Jump from 1.12 meters to a height of 1.15 meters.

– Girls u/12 100m and Long Jump: 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 set two new records. She bettered the 100m record from 14.28 seconds to 14.15 seconds. Furthermore, she excelled in the Long Jump, surpassing the previous record of 3.84 meters with an impressive jump of 4.22 meters.

– Girls u/13 High Jump: 𝗔𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 improved the previous record of 1.27 meters to a height of 1.31 meters.

Primary Department Prizegiving 2023

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet held its annual prizegiving ceremony for its Primary Department (Grade 5 to 7 learners) on Wednesday morning, 18 October.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡’𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 – 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚.

Before learners were presented with different awards as per their performance and achievement, they were addressed by the departmental head of the Primary Department, Mrs Yvette Cloete.

In her address, Mrs Cloete emphasized that the prizegiving ceremony is a significant moment in which to celebrate the assiduousness and hard work of the learners across all subjects and extra-mural activities.

“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘦-𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘺, 𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴”, said Mrs Cloete.

The event also featured delightful performances by Antonia Adams who performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘Für Elise’ on the piano, and the school’s junior choir, who sang ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragons.

Then came the moment that everyone had been waiting for – the presentation of awards.

Although the ceremony saw numerous awards presented to learners across all subjects and grades, the climax of the event was the presentation of the 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘅 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 which was this year awarded to Grade 7 learner, Isabella Hulleman who received a big round of applause from her peers and all present in the hall.
