Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s ๐—ฆ๐—˜๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—˜๐—–๐—› ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ก๐—œ๐—ก๐—š saw eight accomplished speakers from Grade 10 to 12, presenting their prepared speeches to convivial audience in The Tony Burrell Union.

Adjudicators Mrs Belinda Grewar, Mrs Tess Neill and Miss Rebecca Langmead provided positive feedback, recognizing the exceptional performances of the speakers.

The final results were extremely close with ๐—”๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐——๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ taking a well-deserved second place for his speech on the topic, “๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด,” which he delivered with passionate intensity.

In addition, the ๐—๐—จ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—˜๐—–๐—› competition held earlier in the term yielded outstanding results. Azile Mqhamkana (Grade 9) secured first place, followed by Zusange Phehlukwayo (Grade 9) in second place and Konke Gawula (Grade 8) in third place. These young speakers showed tremendous promise and impressed the audience with their abilities.

This past Saturday, 24 February, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior cricketers travelled to Komani to compete against Laerskool Hangklip Primary.

On Monday, 26 February, our Top 6 boys’ and girls’ tennis players traveled to Middelburg for an afternoon fixture against Hoรซrskool Middelburg.

In the girls’ singles matches, Union dominated, winning 5 out of 6 matches. The girls’ doubles matches also went in favour of Union, with a clean sweep of 3-0.

In the boys’ singles matches, Union secured 4 victories out of 6. The boys’ doubles matches were closely contested, with Union winning 2 out of 3 matches.

Lastly, in the mixed doubles matches, Union continued their winning streak, securing a convincing victory of 5-1.

On Friday, 23 February, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s rugby boys participated in Hoรซr Volkskoolโ€™s 2024 ๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆรซ ๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ – a pre-season tournament that allows rugby teams the opportunity to effectively finalise their pre-season preparations in a competitive yet relaxed and accommodating environment.

While some of our players had to sit this one out due to cricketing commitments, the rest of the boys who have been putting in the hard yards with their pre-season training, valued the opportunity to take the field again.

We extend our ๐—š๐—ฅ๐—”๐—ง๐—˜๐—™๐—จ๐—Ÿ ๐—ง๐—›๐—”๐—ก๐—ž๐—ฆ to Volkskool for inviting us to participate and giving our boys the opportunity to play. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all involved

A total of 80 swimmers represented the Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet and Union High School, Graaff-Reinet at the annual ๐—ž๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ข๐—ข ๐—š๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—” held at Hoรซr Volkskool on Wednesday, 21 February.

In addition to Union’s spirited participants, teams from Gill, Cradock, Volkskool, Marlow and a group of dedicated home-schoolers showcased their skills in the pool.

In the primary school category, Laer Volkskool secured victory with 408 points, while Union’s Grade 1 to 7 swimmers secured a commendable second place with 346 points. Gill, the Homeschoolers and Cradock Primary School followed closely behind.

Moving to the senior section, Union High School triumphed in the Girls’ section and secured a strong second position in the Boys’ section. Special recognition goes to ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ธ๐—ฒ for his outstanding performance earning him the title of ‘Victor Ludorum’.
