Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s ๐ฆ๐๐ก๐๐ข๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐ฃ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฉ๐๐ก๐๐ก๐ saw eight accomplished speakers from Grade 10 to 12, presenting their prepared speeches to convivial audience in The Tony Burrell Union.
Adjudicators Mrs Belinda Grewar, Mrs Tess Neill and Miss Rebecca Langmead provided positive feedback, recognizing the exceptional performances of the speakers.
The final results were extremely close with ๐๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ taking a well-deserved second place for his speech on the topic, “๐๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ข๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ข๐ถ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ช๐ค ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ข ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ญ๐ฅ ๐ง๐ถ๐ญ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ๐ด,” which he delivered with passionate intensity.
๐๐ผ๐ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฒ๐น๐ฑ’s speech, based on the quote, “๐ ๐ธ๐ช๐ด๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ด ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ค๐ข๐ถ๐ด๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ข๐ด ๐ด๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ด๐ข๐บ, ๐ข ๐ง๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ญ ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ด ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ค๐ข๐ถ๐ด๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ข๐ด ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ด๐ข๐บ ๐ด๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ,” displayed a good dose of humour coupled with wisdom and authenticity.
Overall, the quality of the speeches was excellent, with remarkable growth evident in our young orators.

In addition, the ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ข๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐ฃ๐๐๐๐ competition held earlier in the term yielded outstanding results. Azile Mqhamkana (Grade 9) secured first place, followed by Zusange Phehlukwayo (Grade 9) in second place and Konke Gawula (Grade 8) in third place. These young speakers showed tremendous promise and impressed the audience with their abilities.

Brogan Koeberg, Nombulelo Ncombo, Jemae-Mari Davids, Viwe Ngxekisa, Lina Tadesse, Taegen Hamid, Ciara Kivedo, Milani Pongoma, Lolwethu Dayimani and Sarah Jacobs successfully completed their ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ญ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ง ๐๐๐ ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ in February, for which they were presented with a certificate during a recent school assembly.

On Thursday, 22 February, a group of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet Grade 12 learners, accompanied by Mrs Bronwen Langmead and Mrs Tess Neill, had the privilege of attending a panel discussion led by Professor Jonathan Jansen at the ‘๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐น๐ฑ’ ๐ฒ๐ ๐ต๐ถ๐ฏ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป held at the Feathermarket Centre in Gqeberha.

Professor Jansen’s engaging and humorous presentation left the learners with thought-provoking reflections. ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐๐๐จ๐๐ฏ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ค๐ง๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐ค๐ ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ช๐ข๐๐ก๐, the value of academic achievements, the significance of giving their best efforts, the importance of passion for their work, readiness to adapt their careers and the essence of showing vitality in their pursuits, rather than being stagnant.
Following the panel discussion, the floor was opened for questions, where Sarah Wilmot and Na’eem Mahomed raised insightful queries.

The highlight of their experience was a 3-hour game drive, during which they were fortunate to see a lot of wildlife.
Early morning walks immersed them in the serenity of the reserve, while quiet moments around the bonfire provided the perfect setting for bonding and reflection.
As night fell, the sound of elephants grazing and trumpeting near their accommodation created goosebump-inducing moments, adding a touch of magic to the experience.
Brain breaks filled with excitement, scrumptious meals that tantalized the taste buds, and engaging sessions around the table fostered camaraderie and personal growth among the prefects.

In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit,ย Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Representative Council of Learners (RCL) and Interact Club joined forces throughout 2023 to raise an amount of R5 000 for the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association.

The RCL and Interact organised various functions that not only brought the school community together but also served as platforms to raise funds for this noble cause. Dances, bake sales and civvies days were among the activities that captured the enthusiasm and participation of the learners. One particularly noteworthy event was the October Cancer Drive, which included a civvies day where learners were encouraged to dress up in support of cancer awareness. Additionally, a Remembrance Board for Ribbons for Cancer was created to honour those who have fought against this formidable disease. The highlight of the drive was Dr. Van Gensen’s Cancer Awareness speech, which dealt with the impact of smoking as a factor in the development of certain cancers as well as the prevention and treatment thereof.
The culmination of these efforts was marked by a heartfelt handover ceremony. Lisakhanye Zonke, an executive RCL member in 2023 and the current Chairperson of the RCL, had the privilege of presenting the raised funds to Mrs Maxie van Aswegen of the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Senior Department also welcomed two new additions to its staff this year!
Firstly, we are delighted to welcome back ๐ ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐, who has previously taught at Union and will now be the Class Teacher for Grade 8B. ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ด ๐ข ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ต๐ฉ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฆ๐น๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฆ๐ข๐ฎ. Mrs Botes will be teaching Geography to our Grade 10, 11, and 12 learners, Social Sciences to our Grade 8 and 9 students, as well as Life Orientation and PE for our Grade 8 and 9 learners.
Secondly, we are excited to introduce ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฐ๐ต, a fresh new face at Union. Miss Bosch joins us as the Class Teacher for Grade 9B. ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ช๐ด ๐ฑ๐ข๐ด๐ด๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ค๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ด ๐ข ๐ง๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด๐ฉ ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ค๐ต๐ช๐ท๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ค๐ญ๐ข๐ด๐ด๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฎ. Miss Bosch will be teaching Afrikaans FAL to our Grade 11 and 12 students, Life Orientation to our Grade 11 and 9 learners, and she will also be responsible for Life Orientation and PE for our Grade 12, 10, 9 and 8 learners.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Junior Department was excited to welcome two ๐ก๐๐ช ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ฅ๐ฆ to its compliment of staff at the beginning of the year.
๐ ๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ has seamlessly settled into her role and is providing excellent instruction to our learners. In addition to being the class teacher for Grade 7M, she is teaching a diverse range of subjects such as Life Skills and Art for the Grade 5 learners, Afrikaans and Natural Sciences and Technology for the Grade 7s and Life Orientation and PT for the Grade 6 girls.
We are also thrilled to have ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐-๐๐ฒ๐ฒ ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น๐ on our team. Her dedication and passion for teaching is evident in her work. Miss Abels is the Class Teacher for Grade 6A and is teaching mathematics for our Grade 5s and 6s, as well as Life Orientation and PT for the Grade 5 and 6 boys.
