Union High School, Graaff-Reinet has always been closely tied to the scouting movement in Graaff-Reinet.

The Graaff-Reinet Scout Troop was established in 1910 and is recognised throughout South Africa for its high calibre of Scouts that go out into the world.

Scouts offer boys of Union High School and beyond (from Grade 5 to 12) 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙢.

The Scout Troop will hold its 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟲 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆, from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Chookie Geard Scout Hall, where skills such as outdoor survival, first aid, citizenship, leadership as well as teamwork are learned.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮!

Congratulations to the Class of 2022, who achieved a 96.6% pass rate, with 57 out of 59 learners passing the NSC examination.

While disappointed that we did not achieve a 100% pass rate, we are delighted in the overall excellent performance of our learners.

A special word of congratulations goes to our top candidate 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 on achieving six subject distinctions and an average of 85%, as well as 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 (five subject distinctions and an average of 83,14%), 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲 (five distinctions and an average of 82,57%), 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 (3 distinctions and an average of 79,86%), 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘆 (4 distinctions and an average of 79,25), 𝗧𝗮𝗺𝘀𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 (4 distinctions and an average of 78,29%), 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗰𝗡𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 (1 distinction and an average of 73,71%), 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗿𝘆𝗻 𝗢𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗮𝗹 (2 distinctions and an average of 73,14%), 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘆𝗹𝗲 (2 distinctions and an average of 72,82%) and 𝗖𝗵𝗹𝗼𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 (1 distinction and an average of 71,86%).

Thirty-nine (66%) of the learners qualified for Bachelor Studies, while eighteen (31%) qualified for Diploma studies.

𝘼 𝙩𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙛 54 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙗𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙.

Our sincerest thanks go to a very dedicated team of educators, who assisted these learners in reaching their full potential, as well as to all stakeholders in this community for their tremendous support of our efforts to maintain excellence in education and academics in particular.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to senior music student, 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁é 𝗢𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗳𝘀𝗲𝗻, who successfully passed her Rockschool Contemporary Practical Examination with assurance!

Brigetté played a Contemporary Rockschool Grade 7 Graded Certificate Examination and achieved 83% (Merit).

A Contemporary Rockschool Graded Certificate examination plots the student stylistic specialism, helping them to develop an in-depth understanding of the type of music that appeals to them mostly, whether it is pop, rock, metal, blues, country, funk, latin, jazz, reggae or film and musical theatre.

Brigetté mastered the key skills up to Grade 6 and developed notable security of appropriate technique, use of expressive devices, rhythmic complexity, fluency and musical understanding. She has mastered the ability to improvise with conviction and personality plus demonstrate strong musical form as well as structure. Her performances showed mature and authentic stylistic awareness, with developing individuality and communication.

According to Ms Zelda Oosthuizen, her music educator, Brigetté showed exceptionally diligent work, especially for keeping in mind that Brigetté takes music as an additional module while still achieved subject music standard.

Fraser Davis and Robert Wallace from Salisbury Cathedral School in the UK will be joining us in Grade 7 for the duration of Term 1, after which two Union learners, Zoë Mills and Brett Kenmuir, will be heading to Salisbury for Term 2.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 and we cannot succeed without the generosity of supporters like Advanced Irrigation.

The kit – which includes a new set of whites and a T20 top – looks amazing and the boys can’t wait to get onto the field.

Today, we 𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘 our Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learners back to our campus for the 2023 academic year.

For just over a century, we have taught girls and boys with 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 and 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. We look forward to another year of growth!

𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬, 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴!

2023 𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗬 𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 students, Fraser Davis and Robert Wallace, have arrived in South Africa!

The pair was picked up from the airport on Saturday, 14 January, after which they spent a sunny couple of days in Plettenberg Bay with Grade 7 learner Brett Kenmuir and his family.

While in Plett, the boys were treated with a visit to the Elephant Sanctuary and Monkeyland, which they enjoyed very much.

On Tuesday, 17 January, they were settled into Union’s Herby Arnott House by the Kenmuir and Mills families, who will be taking care of them this term.
