As of Tuesday, 11 October, Union High School boasts probably the most modern science classroom in the Eastern Cape.

The recently refurbished classroom was unveiled to learners and staff at the start of the 4th term and, going forward, will help create many a โ€œwow momentโ€ in education for Unionโ€™s learners.

As the schoolโ€™s Physical Sciences classroom and laboratory was decades old, ๐™– ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™Ÿ๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™จ ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™ ๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ง๐™ฉ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ฎ๐™š๐™–๐™ง, ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™˜๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š ๐™– ๐™˜๐™ก๐™–๐™จ๐™จ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ค๐™ข ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™จ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™ซ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ช๐™–๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ช๐™ก๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, ๐™—๐™ช๐™ฉ ๐™™๐™š๐™จ๐™ž๐™œ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™™ ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™จ๐™ช๐™˜๐™ ๐™– ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฎ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™ก๐™š๐™–๐™ง๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ง๐™จ ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ก๐™š๐™–๐™ง๐™ฃ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฌ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™š ๐™™๐™š๐™ข๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ก๐™จ ๐™˜๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™—๐™š ๐™™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ ๐™š๐™–๐™จ๐™š.

โ€œOur dream was to convey the study of chemistry and science with as much enthusiasm as possible. It is so much easier with the right tools, technology and infrastructure,โ€ said Mr Langmead, Unionโ€™s Governing Body vice-chair. โ€œWhat we now have is a visually stimulating high-tech space, where we can place special emphasis on experimental learning, enriched by media and electronic support.โ€

Odyssey Completed!

The next time you drive the 54kms between Graaff-Reinet and Nieu-Bethesda, take cognisance of just how far the distance is and how long it takes in a car. Then imagine walking this distance (in fact โ€“ walking 65km), carrying all you need to survive on your backs for 5 days!

This yearโ€™s instalment of this annual adventure saw 61 excited, well equipped Grade 10s journey by foot down the Gats River Canyon between Nieu-Bethesda and Graaff-Reinet carrying all they needed to survive on their backs. Upon conclusion of the five days, they emerged as stronger, wiser young adults on the other side, having learned so much along the way.
