๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ took 5 wickets for 4 runs in just 3 overs against Newton Park Primary School.๐ก๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฝ๐ took 7 wickets for a mere 3 runs in just 3.5 overs against Laer Volkskool.๐๐ผ๐๐ต๐๐ฎ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐๐ถ๐น๐น showcased his all-around abilities by taking an impressive 5 for 15 in 4 overs against the Homeschoolers, as well as making his first century against Gill Primary School.๐ฆ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ took 5 wickets for 44 runs against a formidable opponent, Paarl Boys’ High School

On Wednesday afternoon, 25 October, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Grade 8 to 12 athletes participated in the annual Senior Interschools Athletics event held at Hoรซr Volkskool.
In a tightly contested afternoon, the final scores saw Union accumulate 742 points to Volkskoolโs 731 points. ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐จ๐ณ๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฏ๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ข๐ต๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ๐ด ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ฐ ๐ฑ๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ช๐ฑ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต!
We would like to recognise Camran Swartz as Unionโs ๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐๐ ๐๐๐ฌ. Camran managed to secure first places in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Additionally, he also claimed third place in the Long Jump event. Well done, Camran!
Weโd also like to acknowledge the performances of Qhama Solomon, Luvelo Makaula and Xavier Barlow, who achieved numerous podium positions and contributed significantly to Union’s success.
On the girls’ side, Charlize Vorster deserves special recognition for her outstanding contribution of points, which played a crucial role in Union’s victory. We also applaud Tara Ferreira, Joy Merifield and Ambesiwi Tokwe for making their mark and showcasing their talent.

This past weekend saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Top 4 junior girls and boys tennis players participating in the annual ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น๐๐ป ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐ ๐ง๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ in Graaff-Reinet.
The girls’ team competed against formidable opponents from Stellenbosch, Worcester and Cradock in the group stage, emerging victorious in all their encounters to finish at the top of their group.
๐๐ค๐ซ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐ค ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ก, ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ก๐จ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ฉ๐ค๐ช๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ฉ ๐พ๐ค๐ก๐ก๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐. Despite their valiant efforts, they narrowly missed out on a win, settling for a well-deserved second place in the tournament.
The junior boys’ team faced opponents from Stirling, Stellenbosch C and Cradock in the group stages. They managed to secure a commendable second place in their group.
In the battle for third and fourth place, the boys engaged in an encounter against Stellenbosch B. Although they fought gallantly, they narrowly missed out on claiming the third spot, ultimately securing a respectable fourth place in the competition.
The recent Interschools’ athletics meet, contested by the Grade 1 to 7 learners of Union and Volkskool on Monday afternoon, 23 October, saw several records being broken.

– Boys u/11 Shotput: ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐รฉ ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ surpassed the previous record of 8.77 meters by achieving a remarkable throw of 9.46 meters.
– Girls u/11 100m and High Jump: ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐พ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ-๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ฎ proved her versatility in both sprinting and high jump. She improved the 100m record from 14.57 seconds to an impressive 14.44 seconds. Additionally, she raised the bar in the High Jump from 1.12 meters to a height of 1.15 meters.
– Girls u/12 100m and Long Jump: ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ set two new records. She bettered the 100m record from 14.28 seconds to 14.15 seconds. Furthermore, she excelled in the Long Jump, surpassing the previous record of 3.84 meters with an impressive jump of 4.22 meters.
– Girls u/13 High Jump: ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ฎ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ฝ improved the previous record of 1.27 meters to a height of 1.31 meters.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet had the pleasure of hosting Newton Park today for a match between the schools’ respective u/13A sides.
Union lost the toss and were asked to bat first.
Initially, Union encountered difficulties, losing four wickets with only 36 runs on the scoreboard. ๐๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ, ๐ข๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐๐ฑ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ฝ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฝ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ต๐ณ ๐ฟ๐๐ป๐, allowing Union to finish their innings with a total of 133 runs for the loss of four wickets.
Paxton demonstrated impressive play, scoring 61 runs off 50 balls, while Hudson contributed 43 runs off 45 balls.
In the second half, Union’s performance was outstanding as they successfully bowled out Newton Park for a mere 20 runs.
Murray Hope delivered an exceptional spell, taking five wickets for only four runs in three overs. Keenan Jafta also contributed greatly, securing three wickets for 11 runs in three overs.
The Union High School’s 1st XI cricket team once again had the privilege to attend the prestigious Cape School’s Cricket Week hosted by Paul Roos Gymnasium from the 29th of September until the 3rd of October 2023.
Unfortunately the first game against Paarl Gymnasium was called off due to a wet pitch and outfield. The boys then spent some time in the Paul Roos indoor centre for a practice session.
On Sunday we played our 1st match again Paarl Boy’s High School. Paarl went into bat first and managed to score 143 runs after being bowled out. Special mention must be made of Shaakir Kazi who took 5 wickets. Union then went in to bat and could only managed to put 40 runs on the board. We lost the game by 103 runs
Our second game was against Parel Vallei High School from Somerset West. Union went in to bat first and set a target of 96 after getting off to a brilliant start but a continuous loss of wickets led us to not being able to put a defendable score on the board. Union managed to get five wickets before Parel Vallei eventually managed to get the score. Union lost the game by 5 wicketsย
Our third and final match was against Bishops from Cape Town. Union were put in to bat first once again and only managed to score 49. Bishops passed the target with the loss of no wickets. Union lost the game by 10 wickets.
A lot of valuable lessons were learnt throughout the week. We will definitely return as a stronger team next year.

These four talented individuals took to the field for the very last time as part of Union’s 1st XI at the prestigious 2023 edition of the annual Cape Schools’ Cricket Festival.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learner ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป competed in the Paardepoort Rally, the second round of the Algoa Rally Club’s regional championship, on Saturday, 30 September.
Assisting her father Deon as navigator in his speedy Toyota Etios, Demi performed exceptionally well.

Participating in this exciting 2-day race, covering 82km of fast-flowing, technical river, is no easy feat and requires not only speed and fitness but also excellent river skills.
This past weekendโs cricket matches between Union High School, Graaff-Reinet and Kingswood College, South Africa, contested in Makhanda, saw Unionโs u/11A and u/13A teams achieve mixed success in a series of entertaining and closely contested games.
โข On Friday, 22 September, Unionโs u/11 team displayed their impressive bowling skills as they bowled Kingswood out for a score of 63 runs. The following day, the u/11 team won the toss and chose to bat first. However, the team struggled to get going and were eventually bowled out for 80 runs in just 17.5 overs. ๐ก๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฒ๐น ๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฝ๐ and ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ถ were Union’s best performers, batting steadily with 14 and 8 runs respectively. Kingswood passed the target with just one wicket down.
โข The Union u/13 team found themselves in a similar position on Friday, losing the toss and being asked to bowl first. Kingswood scored an impressive 127 runs, with ๐๐ผ๐ต๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด and ๐๐ผ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฉ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ each taking three or more wickets. Union struggled in the initial stages of their innings, finding themselves 49 for 5 down in the 10th over. Saturday was a different story for the u/13 team, as they bowled first and their bowlers demonstrated outstanding skill. ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐๐ฎ emerged as a brilliant performer, taking four wickets, while the team bowled Kingswood out for a score of 115. In reply, Union chased down the target with 7 wickets down. ๐๐ผ๐ต๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด anchored the innings with a well-played 33 that ensured ๐จ๐ป๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฏ๐ ๐ฏ ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฒ๐๐.
