𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to our 1st XV on winning their encounter against Woodridge College & Preparatory School 29-10!

The match was a big arm wrestle from the start. Every scrum, line-out and ruck was an intense battle with the Union boys refusing to back down.

Woodridge scored the first try of the match through a rolling maul taking a 0 – 5 lead. A lot of unforced errors and pressure from Woodridge kept Union scoreless for most of the 1st half.

The Union team, however, found a bit of rhythm just before half time. Sustained pressure and good discipline led to a driving maul try scored by 𝗜𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆, taking the score to 5-all at half time.

The second half started with Woodridge scoring the first try, resulting in them taking a 5 – 10 lead. This was short lived, however, as Union responded almost immediately with a try through 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗱 after some slick handling from the backs and a dominant scrum by the forwards.

The boys then ran in a further three tries through 𝗔𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼 𝗖𝗲𝗸𝗶𝘀𝗼, 𝗦𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗼 𝗔𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗹𝘀 and 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗼 𝗦𝗶𝘀𝗵𝘂𝗯𝗮.

𝗛𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗶 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝗽𝗲 converted two tries.

𝗥𝗨𝗚𝗕𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧: 𝗨𝗛𝗦 𝘃𝘀 𝗞𝗶𝗿𝗸𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱

This past weekend, Saturday, 7 May, Union High School’s 1st XV played at home against Hoërskool Kirkwood.

Despite rainy and wet conditions, it was lovely for all the players to play at home, after having played their previous two fixtures away. Union started the match on a positive note, putting Kirkwood under a lot of pressure. Unfortunately, final passes being knocked on, stopped Union from scoring a few early tries.

Kirkwood took advantage of Union’s mistakes and, after a sequence of penalties conceded, claimed an early 0 – 7 lead.

Union, however, stuck to their guns. Their line-outs were much improved from the previous fixture and this was used well as an attacking platform. After a line-out deep in Kirkwood territory, Union set up a couple of phases, and, after Kirkwood got sucked in, Union played wide and scored their 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝘼𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙤 𝘾𝙚𝙠𝙞𝙨𝙤.

𝘼 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙧𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙗𝙮 𝘽𝙪𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙞 from the restart ensured Union made no unnecessary errors and retained ball possession. After continuous pressure, Union was awarded a penalty. 𝘼 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡-𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙈𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚 𝙃𝙡𝙤𝙮𝙞 resulted in Union leading 10 – 7 at half time.

Union started the second half much the same as they did the first, but the wet conditions made handling tough and knocked a few balls on with open try lines.

After sustained pressure, Union scored their 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙎𝙞𝙮𝙖 𝘽𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙬𝙚, which was 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙃𝙡𝙖𝙠𝙞 𝙎𝙠𝙚𝙥𝙚. Hlaki also slotted a penalty on the stroke of final play. Union won the match 20 – 7.

RUGBY RESULTS: Union High School’s 1^st XV vs Cradock – 23 April

This past weekend, Saturday, 23 April, Union High School’s 1^st XV travelled to Cradock to play against Cradock High School.

In rainy, wet and cold weather conditions, the Union team had to change the way they play their game.

Cradock crossed the white wash after early dominance in the match to take a 7-0 lead.

The Union boys settled and started putting phases together that put Cradock under pressure.

Sisipho Arnols slotted two penalty kicks to narrow the deficit to one point, resulting in Union trailing 7-6 at half-time.

Union started the second half well, dominating most facets of the game, particularly the scrums where Bubele Thibini and Mihan Campbell scrummed exceptionally well, but were unfortunately not rewarded.

Union then had four clean breaks, but could not capitalise. It was certainly a match of missed opportunities for Union.

Cradock scored their second try with about ten minutes to go.

The Union boys kept on fighting until the final whistle, trying to score a winning try, unfortunately, they were unsuccessful and lost the match 12-6.

Well done to Cradock on winning the match.

Other results:

u/14A won 26 – 0;

u/15A won 38 – 3;

u/16A lost 10 -15 and;

2^nd Team lost 5 – 15.

The match started at a frantic pace, where possession was often exchanged by the two sides.

The Union boys exerted ample pressure which led to a kickable penalty slotted by Sisipho Arnols resulting in Union taking a 3-0 lead. Muir College bounced back quickly, scoring the first try of the match to take the score to 3 – 7.

Muir then scored another converted try extending their lead to 3 – 14. The Union boys started to fight back just before half-time, but a brilliant cover tackle by the Muir College full back kept Union at bay. Muir led 3 – 14 at half-time.

Union started the second half well, putting their bodies on the line, refusing to back down. Muir College received a yellow card which the Union boys capitalized on, to score a driving maul try through Ivan Murray, closing the deficit to six points.

Union created a few more scoring opportunities but failed to convert, in turn, Muir ran in another try in the last minute of the match to take the spoils 8 – 19.

Well done to Muir College on winning the match.
