B Age Gala – Results

Several of our Union High School, Graaff-Reinet swimmers represented the school at the recent 𝗕 𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔, delivering a series of determined and encouraging performances across the various age groups.

Notable highlights included a superb 1st place finish for 𝗔𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 in the Girls u16 50m Freestyle, along with strong podium finishes from 𝗭𝗼ë 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 and 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 and an excellent 1st place in the Girls 17 & Over 100m Breaststroke for 𝗘𝘀𝗲𝘁𝗵𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮. 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗼𝗻 also impressed with multiple top 5 finishes in a highly competitive Boys u13 age group.

Beyond the podium, every Union swimmer contributed to a proud showing, with many achieving personal milestones and gaining valuable race experience.

Swimmers such as 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗨𝘇𝗶𝗮𝗵 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲, 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁, 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘇𝗮 and 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲 are to be commended for their dedication and willingness to give their best.

Goals For Good

Graaff-Reinet has always been a town that rallies behind its own. This year, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s 1st team hockey girls are inviting our community to be part of something truly special, 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘢𝘧𝘧-𝘙𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘵.

As our girls prepare for an exciting 2026 season, they won’t just be playing for results on the scoreboard. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁.

We are proud to launch our 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 pledge campaign – a heartfelt partnership between our Union hockey girls, local businesses and the charities that serve our town.

Here’s how it works:

Local businesses pledge R100 (𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮 𝘙20) per goal scored by our 1st hockey team throughout the season, with the option to 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽 for the season.

At the end of the season, the total pledge is calculated – and then the following happens:

• 𝟱𝟬% 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗡𝗣𝗢) 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲

• 𝟱𝟬% 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 – supporting equipment, coaching travel and player development

That means every single goal scored in 2026 becomes a goal for our community too.

But we’re not stopping there.

Each sponsor and their chosen NPO will receive 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 – because we want to celebrate the businesses who back our girls and shine a light on the incredible organisations doing life-changing work in Graaff-Reinet and beyond.

Even more importantly, our girls will make it their mission to personally connect with the NPOs during the year. They want to visit, learn serve and give back where they can. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁.

This initiative is about more than fundraising.

It’s about raising young women who understand gratitude.

It’s about strengthening the bond between school and town.

It’s about turning sport into service.

Some matches may end goalless. Others may see the scoreboard light up. But whatever the result, we know this:

Every goal will stand for something greater.

PE Oval Sarah Baartman Athletics – Results

Three of our junior learners proudly represented the school at the Oval in Gqeberha during the Sarah Baartman Athletics Day on Saturday, 14 February, and delivered strong performances.

𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 soared to an impressive 3rd place in the Girls u11 High Jump, while 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗵 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 secured a commendable 5th place in the Girls u12 High Jump. In the field events 𝗚𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 achieved a strong 5th place in the Girls u12 Shot Put.

Junior Cricket Vs Herbert Hurd – Results

What a fantastic weekend of cricket for Union’s juniors against a visiting Herbert Hurd.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝟭𝟭𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 across both days, starting on Friday with a thrilling three-wicket win after chasing down 52 in a tightly contested 20-over match.

Callan Strydom (3/11) and Jac Jacobs (1/3) set the tone with disciplined bowling and the team kept their nerve to reach 53/7 in 18 overs, sealing the victory with a calm finish under pressure.

On Saturday, the boys proved their resilience again, defending a modest total of 32/8 in a rain-shortened 10-over clash. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, with Lucko Pehlo (1/2), Mark Copeman (1/4) and Owam Kotishini (1/7) applying relentless pressure to restrict Herbert Hurd to 22/3. Two gritty, hard-fought wins highlighted the team’s growing confidence and outstanding teamwork.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵.

On Friday, they powered their way to a commanding 102-run victory after posting 135/6, thanks to a superb unbeaten 53 off 31 balls from Edwin Holmes, well supported by Kari Stern’s 31.

The bowlers then took control, dismissing Herbert Hurd for just 33, with Holmes (3/7), Uthman Steele and Kevin de Klerk leading the charge. 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝟭𝟬 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁, but Union adapted brilliantly. Holmes once again anchored the innings with an unbeaten 33 as Union posted 74/5, before the bowlers produced another clinical display.

Ben Wormald (3/6), Uthmaan Steele (2/3) and Raydon Hendricks (1/1) ensured a convincing 40-run victory.

Union High School learner 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗼𝗻𝘀 participated in the Victoria West Show this past weekend, 6 to 7 February, competing in the Saddle Horse competition.

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘚𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺.

Emma achieved an outstanding 1st place in the Park Horse division for riders under 18, as well as a commendable 2nd place in the Equitation Class for riders under 18.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘂𝘁 – a wonderful start to what promises to be an exciting journey ahead!

Thank You, Mrs Putter

As preparations for this year’s school production of 𝘠𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘺 continue in full swing, it feels only right to pause and give credit where it is truly due.

𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝘃𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, quietly and masterfully guiding the cast through rehearsals, is once again bringing her remarkable gift for theatre to life on our stage.

First invited to become involved in school productions back in 2004 as choreographer, Mrs Putter soon became an essential creative force, going on to direct alternating middle and high school productions year after year.

𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹’𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 – from the unforgettable 𝘓𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨, with its stage stretching into the audience, to more recent colourful favourites such as 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘥, 𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘵, 𝘚𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 and 𝘌𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘰.

What makes Mrs Putter’s productions so special is the joyful energy and creativity that radiates through every detail. An avid seamstress, she designs and makes the costumes herself, often contributing to backdrops as well, alongside the long-standing support of Mrs Janet Kingwill, who has assisted with backdrops faithfully over the years.

𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺, 𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 – she never flusters, even when dress rehearsals feel like pure chaos. Somehow, by opening night, everything comes together seamlessly and the singing, acting and dancing are always nothing short of incredible.

𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥, 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦.

Union High School is truly fortunate to have someone like Mrs Putter at the heart of its cultural life. Her dedication, creativity and steady presence have enriched the school community for over two decades, leaving lasting memories not only for audiences, but for the many children whose confidence and talents she has nurtured along the way.

Her productions are more than performances – they are celebrations of colour, joy and teamwork – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗱.

Interschools Gala – Results

𝗔 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗮 unfolded between Volkskool and the Union Schools on Monday, 9 February, with races marked by respectful competition and steady enthusiasm from the spectators.

As if scripted to perfection, the heavens opened and rain poured down to beautifully cap off the event, creating a truly memorable and special moment for all swimmers, supporters and staff who shared in the experience.

Union High School’s 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝟭 𝘁𝗼 𝟳 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, finishing on a total of 525 points to Laer Volkskool’s 522.

Well done to both schools 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 to the day’s Victrix Ludorum, Union’s Taylor Jacobs and the Victor Ludorum, JJ van Schalkwyk (Laer Volkskool).

The high school events provided an exciting afternoon of competition with outstanding performances from both Union and Hoër Volkskool.

Volkskool emerged as the winners of this section, finishing with a total of 366 points, while Union followed closely behind on 317 points in a strong showing from our swimmers.

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀, with Volkskool’s Kate-Lynn Kruger awarded Victrix Ludorum after an exceptional performance, while Union’s Ben Lemke claimed the Victor Ludorum title with 30 points.

It was especially rewarding to see both schools celebrating success, with each taking home a section win and top swimmer award on the day – 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗮.

Senior Cricket Vs Marlow – Results

Due to bad weather Friday’s T20 games were called off.

Union 2nd XI vs Marlow
Union batsmen were bowled out for 63 in 17 overs.
• Liyabona top-scored with 15 runs off 25 balls, striking three fours, before being run out.
• Qhama added 9 runs off 15 balls, including one boundary.
Marlow started aggressively in their chase, needing 64 runs for victory, and dominated from the start.
Marlow won with 10 wickets.

U/15 match was called off when rain interrupted.

1St XI Match Report
Union High School produced an excellent bowling performance to dismiss Marlow for 74 runs.
The standout bowler was Yaaseen Kazi, who delivered an outstanding spell of 5 wickets for 14 runs in 7 overs, including 2 maiden overs, putting Marlow under significant pressure.
In reply, Union High School struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at crucial stages. Despite a promising start with the ball, Union could not maintain composure during the chase, eventually falling short.
Result: Marlow won the match by 22 runs.

Senior Tennis – Van Niekerk & Koen Tennis Tournament Results

On Friday, 8 of our senior tennis players travelled to Burgersdorp to take part in the Van Niekerk & Koen tennis tournament, where they competed against Burgersdorp High School, Cradock High School, De Aar High School, and Hoërskool Jim Fouché from Bloemfontein.

Having looked forward to this fixture since the start of term, our players were excited and in good spirit. This translated into magnificent matchplay as the players started off with doubles and then moving into mixed doubles. After an intense day on the courts, Union was in a very good position, claiming victory over Burgersdorp and Jim Fouché, whilst drawing against Cradock. After De Aar High School took the trophy last year, our players knew their fifth round on Saturday would be a tough one. However, their determination and skilful tactics on the court pulled them through, beating De Aar with 6 matches to 2, making Union the winners of the doubles and mixed doubles tournament.

The final round of the tournament was completed with singles matches deciding the overall result. Although the team had shown strong performance in earlier rounds, the players struggled to maintain the same level of competitiveness during the last round. Union ended the tournament with a 3^rd place overall.

Despite the disappointing results, the tournament provided a valuable learning opportunity. Improving mental preparation and confidence in individual play will be important areas of focus for future tournaments.
