Union High School held its annual prizegiving ceremony for its Primary Department (Grade 5 to 7 learners) on Wednesday morning, 20 October.
The event is one of the most important days in the schoolโs calendar which is long-awaited by everyone – educators and learners alike.
Before learners were presented with different awards as per their performance and achievement, they were addressed by the departmental head of the Primary Department, Mrs Evette Cloete.
In her address, Mrs Cloete emphasized that the prizegiving ceremony is a significant moment in which to celebrate the assiduousness and hard work of the learners across all subjects and extra-mural activities.
โThe schoolโs annual prize-giving ceremony is that moment of the year in which we recognise our top achievers as well as encouraging others to take their studies seriously, so that next year they could be counted amongst outstanding learnersโ, said Mrs Cloete.
The event also featured delightful performances by two of the primary departmentโs pianists, Taegen Hamid and Katelyn Trollip.
Then came the moment that everyone had been waiting for – the presentation of awards.
Although the ceremony saw numerous awards presented to learners across all subjects and grades, the climax of the event was the presentation of the Old Unionite Shield for the Dux learner which was this year awarded to Grade 7 learner, Katelyn Trollip, who received a big round of applause from her peers and all present in the hall.
It is our firm hope that the time following the prizegiving ceremony will be well-spent by learners and educators alike, as they conclude the yearโs work.
Alexandra Imrie, a Grade 11 learner at Union High School, recently donated a whopping 70cms of her golden locks to the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association to be made into wigs for those suffering from cancer.

The members of Union High School’s Art Club managed to escape the searing heat this week and spent a cool, contemplative time in the Hester Rupert Art Gallery Graaff Reinet.
During this time they were shown some of the national treasures that are exhibited in this gallery, including original works by Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, Alexis Preller and Walter Battis.
The young artists looked at works from various art movements such as Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism and Post Modernism.
They also saw works in different mediums including oil paint, watercolour, sculpture and various printing techniques.
We are so fortunate to have a collection such as this in Graaff-Reinet, and the Art Club came away with a new appreciation of the visual arts.

On Monday evening, 11 October, the Grade 8 to 12 boarders at Unionโs Arthur Kingwill House enjoyed their annual house dinner and awards evening on the fields in front of the Tony Burrell Union.
The weather played along beautifully for this auspicious event, themed โUnder the Starsโ, with fairy lights and great camaraderie creating a wonderful ambiance.
The event was an opportunity for the boarding houseโs staff and learners to reflect back on the year, to celebrate and recognize the immense growth each boarder experienced in this time, as well as to say farewell to the matric group.
It was a delight to see the learners dressed in their finery – they represented themselves very well and enjoyed a truly memorable evening.
To start the evening, Mr Donald Kingwill, Superintendent of Arthur Kingwill House, welcomed the guests and thanked all those who had contributed to the success and happiness of the past year, particularly the 2021 Grade 12s and prefect body. They have led the boarding house with quiet dignity and a passion for the school which doesnโt go unnoticed.
