Thinking Outside The Building

Outdoor learning isnโ€™t a new concept. Teachers at Union have long enjoyed taking their learners outside for lessons and teaching in the outdoors.
Earlier this year, however, it was decided to formalise the โ€œoutdoor classroomโ€ concept at Union for the benefit of learners and educators alike.
We are therefore extremely excited to be able to announce that construction recently began on our first designated outdoor classroom space, which will be ready for use at the start of the 2022 academic year.
The space will be fully equipped to move indoor learning outside without sacrificing the necessary resources to teach or the comfort of learners.
This space will provide a new alternative to traditional classrooms by removing walls and windows to optimize ventilation, while creating a sustainable, dynamic learning experience for learners.
This is the first of several such spaces planned for the Union campus.
We hope you will share in our excitement, knowing what an asset these spaces will be for our campus and how much enjoyment our learners will get from them.

Gr 4s Meet Their Leaders

Union High Schoolโ€™s newly elected Head Prefects for 2022, Matthew Basson, Kendall Krige, Sisipho Arnols and Asa Matross are a team of talented and enthusiastic learners, eager to uphold the morale and camaraderie of the school while serving as positive role models for the younger learners of the school.
This was evident during these four learnersโ€™ visit to Union Preparatory Schoolโ€™s Grade 4 classes earlier today, Tuesday, 2 November.
Making the move the Union High Schoolโ€™s Middle School is a daunting one, and Unionโ€™s Head Prefects wanted to make sure that the little Grade 4s โ€“ who will be making the move in 2022 โ€“ feel welcomed and reassured about this big step in their schooling career.
โ€œThe prefects set the tone, which then carries on to the rest of the school. Itโ€™s important that we create a welcoming and positive environment,โ€ said Head Girl, Kendall Krige.
โ€œBeing recognised by younger learners as Head Girl, Head Boy, or a prefect means itโ€™s easier for them to approach us. And a friendly, familiar face encourages new learners to chat to us if theyโ€™re nervous, need advice or even just some company.โ€

Union High Schoolโ€™s boarding house prefects for 2021/22 were announced during Arthur Kingwill Houseโ€™s recent hostel supper.

These learners were elected by their fellow boarders to provide them with leadership and guidance during the upcoming year.

Being a house prefect is the ultimate honour given in any school boarding establishment and means a great deal to all who are chosen.

With the honour of being a boarding house prefect comes great responsibility, but the badge presented to them is a symbol in the faith bestowed upon them by the school community and we are sure they will all do an excellent job!

Class Of 2021 Valedictory

The annual Valedictory Speech – which was this year delivered by Union High School’s outgoing Head Boy, Kyle-Luke du Preez – was a goodbye speech, but also a โ€œLook at what weโ€™ve doneโ€ moment.
And what our Class of 2021 have done has been nothing short of miraculous.
From the start of their Grade 11 year, to the end of their Grade 12 year, their schooling experience was masked and distanced, tracked and tested, and always a small coronavirus outbreak away from everyone being sent home.
So, yes, ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ to all that. But also . . . look at what theyโ€™ve done.
As uncertainty swirled around them, they stayed focused. They adapted their learning. They finished their assignments. They passed their tests. They supported one another. They gutted and gritted it out even when the end seemed out of reach.
Off into the future you go. Your minds filled with academic knowledge eager to acquire more and share your skills with others. Your hearts brimming with compassion, patience, understanding, kindness, humility and faith.
We are sad to say goodbye but grateful that our paths have crossed and hopeful for what you will become. Strive to bring joy and comfort to those you meet on your journey through life because when you serve and uplift othersโ€ฆ you will find contentment and joy.
Matrics, your education is only beginning.
Live in this world with an open heart to embrace others with compassion; live in this world with an open mind willing to learn new things; live in this world to end oppression; live in this world with a grateful heart and live in this world with open eyes to see the splendours of God’s creation.
