Union High School’s 1st senior hockey team enjoyed a strong and encouraging campaign at this year’s 𝗥𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗥𝗨𝗚𝗕𝗬 & 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟, finishing as runners-up on home turf.

As hosts, the girls settled into the tournament well and showed steady growth across the weekend.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟭-𝟬 𝘄𝗶𝗻 over Brandwag, setting an early rhythm with good structure and consistent attacking pressure. The team moved the ball effectively through midfield and created a number of circle entries, with the forwards making the most of their opportunities.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗙 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗲, where a 13-0 result reflected their ability to control possession and use the width of the field to create space. Their short corner routines also began to show good organisation and execution.

𝗔 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟭-𝟬 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆. Quick ball movement around the circle and improved decision-making in the final third led to a range of scoring opportunities, with a mix of field goals and set pieces contributing to the result.

The semi-final against Pearson Inv presented a more physical and competitive encounter. Union responded well, maintaining their structure and composure to 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝟰–𝟭 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹.

𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘫𝘦 𝘔𝘦𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘬𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 2𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭-𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦. Union created several opportunities through structured build-up play and earned multiple short corners, but were unable to convert. Oranje made good use of their chances to secure a 2-0 result in their favour.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺, with encouraging attacking play, good combination work and a growing understanding within the group.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥, 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭, 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥.

UHS Invitation Hockey Side

As always, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 2nd senior hockey side was invited to participate in the 𝗥𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗥𝗨𝗚𝗕𝗬 & 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 – an opportunity the team embraced with great enthusiasm.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in Cradock, Pearson Inv, Brandwag, DF Malherbe and Outeniqua Inv, gaining valuable match experience throughout.

A hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brandwag stood out, while their first play-off against DF Malherbe ended 0-0, leading to a tense 8-second shootout. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲, captain Chavene Lamont and vice-captain Xarah Hoffman secured a 2-1 victory to take the team through.

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘥, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯.

The festival provided an important foundation as they build towards the months ahead and the players leave feeling encouraged and motivated.

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, the team ultimately finished 10th out of 15 – a solid result and a promising start to their campaign.
