RCL Training – Global Leadership Consultants

On 13 March 2019 the RCL had a training session with Global Leadership Consultants.

There are not many things that warm the heart of an educator more than when a past pupil ploughs back into the very community which shaped him or her. This was what could be sensed when Luphumlo Joka conducted training with the Representative Council for Learners of Union High School at Profcon yesterday.

The vision of Global Leadership Consultants is to build authentic leaders to effectively change society generationally. The values of the company, excellence, integrity, passion, discipline and stewardship was really the golden thread throughout the session.

Global Leadership Consultants was officially started in 2015 by founder Luphumlo Joka whilst he was studying Law at Nelson Mandela University. GLC was birthed out of genuine love and passion for the development of organizations and high performance individuals.

The team specializes in strategic management and leadership development and business leadership support. Their competitive advantage is in their new approach to leadership development birthed by our young innovative team of professionals.

A fun-filled, jam-packed half day session addressing topics like the purpose of leaders, the ultimate leader-shift and the duty of authentic leadership was enjoyed by fifteen excited leaders. We are looking forward to see our leaders finding their purpose and expanding their sphere of influence even further.

We are grateful to Global Leadership Consultants for this invaluable experience which our Representative Council of Learners thoroughly enjoyed!

Gr 10 Tourism: Drostdy Excursion

DROSTDY EXCURSION

On 21 February the Grade 10 Tourism class of Union High School visited the Drostdy Hotel. The learners were welcomed by the Food and Beverage manager, Mr Izak van Rooyen. He gave them a tour of the 5-star facility and enriched them with information about the history of the hotel. The in-room technology of this establishment was something that the learners had only seen in books. The key-card gives access to all facilities in the room and it switches everything off within 10 minutes of leaving the room. The heated towel rails were just one of the luxuries that stood out in the bathrooms. Learners were informed of what is needed to qualify for 5-star grading by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. The facilities and surrounding areas are of the finest quality. This was a wonderful experience. Many learners hope to be in the position to stay at or maybe even own a hotel like this one day.

Elevate Education

Each year, over 120 schools across South Africa choose Elevate Education to run their study skills seminars and workshops for one key reason: each programme actually works! Elevate’s study skills workshops are designed to achieve behavioural change amongst students. The challenge in any study skills programme is getting students to use and apply the skills they learn. Elevate gets students using the skills from its workshops through an integrated process that works.

“I ne…ver knew that studying could be so much fun” leads a report from one of Union High School grade 6 boys, at the end of their study skills seminar on 7th February.

The corridors rang with cheering as learners used mnemonics as part of their demonstrations on how to make studying fun. It was evident from learners’ expressions and renewed energy in their step, that the session, led by young, vibrant presenters from Elevate Education, was a much needed addition to already exceptional focus on learning.

We are looking forward to more of these sessions and even more to seeing how the skills learnt will allow for further refinement of our learners’ skills repertoire.

Top Matric in GRT

Union is very proud to announce that Amanda Brink has been awarded the Johan Rupert Achievement Award for being the TOP MATRIC in Graaff-Reinet for 2019!

Amanda receives a generous cash prize which will be paid towards her studies. Amanda has just arrived at Stellenbosch University where she has been accepted to study Occupational Therapyl

Top Level Club

The top level club opening function for 2019 was held in the Tony Burrel Union on 16 January 2019 at 18h00.
A short motivational videoclip for teens on how to achieve success, formed the introduction on the topic on “How do we perceive success”. Top levelers shared their ideas on what will inspire them as individuals.
The objectives of the Top level club was discussed and the evening concluded by sharing a light supper.

2018 Matric Results

It is our pleasure to announce a NSC 2018 pass rate of 96,9%. Sixty one out of sixty three learners managed to pass their final examination for 2018. Whilst disappointed that we could not manage to maintain a 100% pass rate, we are delighted in the overall excellent performance of our learners. We wish to congratulate our Top Achievers and thank them on their commitment to making Union High School proud.

Our Top 3 performers,  Kelly Rose-Innes, Amanda Brink and Rebecca Langmead, all achieved an overall A-aggregate performance (above 80%) in this final NSC examination for 2018. A special congratulations goes to:

Accounting National Olympiad

During term 2 and 3 the following learners took part in the SAIPA National Accounting Olympiad:

Grade 12 learners: Amanda Brink, Loren Mackelina, Kelly Rose-Innes and Kirsten Van Den Berg.Round 1 took place on 16 May 2018. The marking was done by SAIPA and after round 1 Zintle Maki and Amanda Brink qualified to participate in round two. Round two took place on the 1 August 2018 and after the marking process was completed we were informed that Zintle Maki was placed 8th in the Eastern Cape. Well done on this fine achievement Zintle, may this performance inspire all our Accounting learners!

Senior Prizegiving

The annual Union High School Prizegiving was held in the school hall on Friday 19 October. The guest of honour, Mrs Moira Light, who graciously presented the prizes to those being recognised, was introduced by Head of Department, Mrs Nelia Read. Mrs Light has two children, Rebecca and Matthew, who have matriculated at Union High, and is married to Derek, who is Chairman of the Union High Development Trust.

Mr David Langmead, Chairman of the School Governing Body, presented his welcoming speech and reported on the activities of the Governing Body after which the Headmaster, Mr W.E. Pringle, presented his annual report.

It was a glittering occasion where the many achievements and triumphs, and those who simply work hard behind the scenes, throughout the year were recognised. In addition, a number of Grade 12 learners who intend studying at tertiary institutions next year received bursaries for further studies.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the head prefects of the school for 2019. The entire Union community was unanimous in their support for Peter Watermeyer(Headboy), Jenna McNaughton (Headgirl), Khanya Butshingi (Deputy Headboy) and Zintle Maki (Deputy Headgirl).
