Senior Hockey vs Collegiate & Victoria Park

UHS vs Collegiate

It was a challenging outing for our girls against Collegiate this past weekend. The First Team went down 10 – 0, but the scoreline does not fully reflect the character and resilience shown on the field. After a very tough start, finding themselves 5 – 0 down after the first chukka and 7 – 0 at halftime, the girls could easily have dropped their heads. Instead, they showed grit, never giving up and continuing to fight until the final whistle. Their determination and refusal to quit in the face of adversity is something to be proud of and will serve them well going forward.

Other results:
U/16A lost 10 – 0
U/14A lost 5 – 1

UHS vs Victoria Park

On Saturday, the First Team delivered a much-improved performance. Despite a slow start, they managed to hold a narrow 1 – 0 lead by Mecoli Vorster for the first three chukkas. The girls created numerous scoring opportunities but struggled to convert. However, their persistence and pressure eventually paid off in the final chukka, where they added four more goals to secure a convincing 5 – 0 win. It was a great display of unity, teamwork and dominance.

Other results:
U/14A lost 12 – 0
U/16A lost 4 – 0
U/16B lost 5 – 1
U/16C lost 3 – 0

Overall, it was a tough weekend at the office. There is clear work to be done and the focus now shifts back to basics and improving fitness. With the right attitude and effort at training, the girls will come back stronger.

Junior Rugby vs Sunridge Primary – Results

The rugby fixtures against Sunridge proved challenging, with our teams facing strong opposition across all age groups.

U/11A went down 19–0, while U/11B lost 39–0. In the U/13 division, U/13B suffered a 50–0 defeat and U/13A lost 43–7.

While the results were not in our favour, the fixtures highlighted key areas for development, particularly in defence, physicality, and game management. These matches will serve as valuable learning experiences as we continue to build and improve throughout the season.

Senior Rugby vs Victoria Park – Results

This past Saturday, Union High School’s 1st XV traveled to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) to face a well-prepared Victoria Park side. The opposition had clearly studied our previous matches and executed a smart defensive plan, shutting down many of our attacking opportunities.

Despite this, Union managed to break through. Qhama Solomon calmly slotted a penalty to put us on the board, and soon after, Dwaine Koeberg produced a brilliant break, supported by excellent team play, to score the only try of the match. Although the performance was not polished, the boys showed composure under pressure—an important lesson that will serve them well later in the season. The 1st team secured a hard-fought 8 – 0 victory.

The 2nd XV also impressed, sticking to their game plan and delivering a strong performance. Their discipline and teamwork paid off with a convincing 31–7 win.

Well done to both teams on a tough but rewarding day of rugby. The grit and determination shown will undoubtedly strengthen the squad as the season progresses.

Other scores (UHS first):
U14: 7 – 20
U15: 0 – 41
U16: 14 – 43

Goals For Good: Ina Botha

As we step into a new term, we are grateful to welcome another special contributor to our 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 campaign – someone whose impact on our hockey programme has been felt quietly, consistently and meaningfully over many years.

𝗜𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗮, of the Karoo Hockey School, has, since 2018, been a familiar and valued presence within Union’s hockey structures.

Through her dedication to coaching and development, she has played a role in shaping countless players, with many of our current 1st team girls having benefitted from her guidance along the way. Whether through refining skills, building confidence, or simply sharing her love for the game, Ina’s influence reaches far beyond the field – it is seen in the growth, composure and passion of the players she has helped nurture.

Pictured alongside her are just a few of the girls whose journeys she has been part of – a small reflection of the many young sportswomen who have crossed paths with her over the years. Ina will be supporting GRAWS through her contribution – a cause that speaks to compassion and care in a different, but equally important, way. GRAWS continues to do vital work in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned, neglected and stray animals in our community and we are proud to see this initiative being supported through the campaign.
