Valedictory 2025

Friday, 17 October 2025, will long be remembered as a day filled with emotion, reflection and pride as Union High School bid farewell to the Class of 2025 during a heartfelt 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 service held in the school hall.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦, 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳’𝘴 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴, 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 – 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦, 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘩, 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦.

After the singing of the School Hymn, the ceremony opened with a meaningful Bible reading and prayer delivered by Deputy Head Boy, 𝗧𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻, and Deputy Head Girl, 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹, setting a reverent tone for what was to follow.

Headmaster Mr William Pringle then addressed the gathering, delivering words that resonated deeply with both the learners and parents – 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 and of the lifelong connections they will always share with their alma mater.

This was followed by the Head Prefects’ Address, in which Head Boy 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗿 𝗞𝗮𝘇𝗶 and Head Girl 𝗔𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲 reflected with warmth and sincerity on their journey through the school – a journey marked by laughter, challenges, growth and unbreakable friendships.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 and of the teachers and friends who shaped their years here.

Adding to the emotional atmosphere, the matrics performed a moving rendition of “𝘐 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥” by One Republic, a song choice that beautifully summed up their message – 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴.

As the slideshow of memories played, capturing moments from their Grade 12 year, there was laughter, nostalgia and quiet tears – a vivid reminder of how quickly time passes and how much these young men and women have grown.

Finally, as the School Song echoed through the hall, the Class of 2025 stood together one last time as Union learners – united in spirit and tradition.

Then came the moment that always stirs the heart: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁. One after the other, they made their way from the hall, pausing at the Centenary Bell – a beloved symbol of Union’s enduring legacy.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲, 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹 – a tradition that marks both an ending and a beginning.

In that moment, surrounded by proud parents, staff and friends, the Class of 2025 stepped into the next chapter of their lives – 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 – your story will forever be part of Union’s proud history.

As we celebrated 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬, we could hardly believe how many of our very own staff members were bidding farewell to their own children in the Class of 2025!

This year, 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀 said goodbye to her eldest, Daniel; 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴 to her youngest, Kyle; 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹 has a double farewell with twins, Kenza and Alex; 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗚𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁 celebrates her youngest, Erin; and 𝗠𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗛𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 watches his eldest, Trystan, take this big step.

Primary Department Prizegiving 2025

Union High School held its annual 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗬 for its Primary Department (Grade 5 to 7 learners) earlier today, Friday, 17 October.

Although the ceremony saw numerous awards being presented to learners across all subjects and grades, the climax of the event was the presentation of the 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘅 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 which was this year awarded to Grade 7 learner, Angelique Kyanda-Kaboza who received a big round of applause from her peers and all present in the hall.

Cricket vs St Andrew’s – Results

Union High School recently participated in a two-day cricket fixture against St Andrew’s High School, with both the U15 and 1st XI teams in action. The matches were played in good spirit, offering both teams valuable experience

U15 MATCH REPORT

Union High School’s U15 team bowled first, with St Andrew’s posting a commanding total of 352 runs in their first innings. Despite the pressure, Khewzi delivered an outstanding bowling performance, finishing with figures of:

15 overs,
2 maidens,
82 runs,
6 wickets.

Well done, Khewzi, on an exceptional display of bowling skill and perseverance.

Union High’s batting line-up struggled against a disciplined St Andrew’s bowling attack, being bowled out for 22 runs in the first innings and 47 runs in the second. St Andrew’s U15 team secured victory by an innings and 283 runs.

1st XI MATCH REPORT

Union High School’s 1st XI captain, Yaaseen Kazi, won the toss and elected to bat first. The team posted a total of 134 all out, with Leander Kraai top-scoring with a well-played 44 runs.

In response, St Andrew’s were bowled out for 79 runs, thanks to a disciplined bowling effort. The best bowling performance came with figures of 4 wickets for 28 runs Yaaseen Kazi.

In the second innings, Union High batted positively, reaching a lead of 255 runs before declaring. Captain Yaaseen Kazi led from the front with a fine innings of 90 runs, narrowly missing out on a well-deserved century. He also contributed with the ball, picking up 2 wickets.

The match concluded as a winning draw in Union High School’s favour, thanks to an excellent all-round performance by the 1st XI.

1st XI vs Marlow – Results

Union High School won the toss and elected to bat first in what promised to be a competitive T20 fixture against Marlow. Union posted a total of 125 runs in their allotted 20 overs, with top-order batsman Yaaseen Kazi leading the charge, scoring a well-constructed 44 runs off 31 deliveries. He was well-supported by Sibabalwe, who contributed 17 runs off 16 balls in a crucial middle-order partnership.

Marlow’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, restricting Union to a modest total on a decent batting surface.

In response, Marlow faced early pressure, losing quick wickets within the first three overs. However, a composed middle-order partnership steadied their innings, allowing them to rebuild and chase down the target. Marlow eventually secured victory by 5 wickets, showing depth and resilience in their batting lineup.

Despite the result, Union’s standout performer was once again Yaaseen Kazi, who not only impressed with the bat but also delivered an exceptional spell with the ball, finishing with figures of 4 overs, 1 wicket for just 12 runs. His disciplined bowling earned him recognition as Union’s Best Bowler of the match.

Senior Music Evening

On Monday evening, 13 October, Union High School hosted its much-anticipated 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗖 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚, this year themed ‘𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘑𝘢𝘻𝘻’.

The event showcased the school’s incredible senior musical talent – 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘱𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘣𝘢 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵é 𝘖𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘧𝘴𝘦𝘯.

Beautiful décor by Mrs Abigail Gedult set the perfect stage for a night filled with harmony and heart, while music teacher Ms Zelda Oosthuizen’s dedication and passion shone through every polished performance.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 – a fitting finale to a night that celebrated artistry, hard work and Union’s rich musical spirit.

Cape Schools Cricket Festival – Results

The 2025 Cape Schools Festival started on Saturday, 4 October and concluded on Tuesday, 7 October, with 12 schools from the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State attending.

The first two days were played under a one-day, two innings format, in which 120 overs were played over the whole day. Days three and four were standard 50-over fixtures.

Selborne College vs Union High

Selborne won the toss in a declaration match and elected to bat first, posting a commanding 350 runs.

Standout Performances:

Trystan Hulleman: 6 wickets in 12 overs for 78 runs.
Richard Murray: Scored a well-played half-century.

Excellent efforts from both players in a challenging encounter.

As the boys took to the field for their first 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀’ 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲, we celebrated Trystan’s 𝟱𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗽 for Union High School’s 1st XI – a well-deserved achievement and a moment to cherish.

Union High vs SACS

Union won the toss and batted first, scoring 298 all out. Unfortunately, six dropped catches in the field proved costly.

Bowling Highlights:

Yaseen Kazi: Brilliant performance with a 5-wicket haul.
Trystan Hulleman: Continued his strong form with 4 wickets.

Union High vs Wynberg (T20 Match)

Union batted first, scoring 110 runs. Wynberg responded with aggressive intent, chasing the target in just 10.4 overs with 9 wickets in hand. A tough result, but a valuable learning experience for the team.

Union High vs St Andrew’s College

St Andrew’s won the toss and batted first, scoring 315 runs.
Union, in reply, were bowled out for 138, resulting in a 177-run loss.
Trystan Hulleman was the top wicket-taker for Union High School during the Cape Schools Festival — a remarkable achievement. Congratulations, Trystan!

Union High School Grade 6 learner 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗯𝘀 proudly represented the Eastern Cape Elephants at the Synergy Tennis Tournament held in Cradock this past weekend.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘸 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘴.

Taylor and her team finished as runners-up in their age group, narrowly missing out on the top spot to the EC Aloes after impressive wins over both the Northern Cape and Free State teams.

Union High School’s U/13A cricketers enjoyed an unforgettable tour to Knysna this past weekend – 𝘢 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘴, 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘣 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵.

In a 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿, Union suffered a narrow 𝟮-𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁 to Kenridge. The Cape side posted 69/8 in their 30 overs, with 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘆𝘂 𝗞𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼 (𝟮/𝟭𝟰) and 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 (𝟮/𝟭𝟰) keeping things tight. In reply, 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀 top-scored with 24, but Union were bowled out for 67 – 𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺.

𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟰 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿:

Union bounced back brilliantly to claim a 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝟵𝟲-𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗻 over Welgemoed. 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 (𝟲𝟭) and 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 (𝟯𝟱)* powered Union to 189 before the bowlers took charge. 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 (𝟰/𝟭𝟱) and 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀 (𝟰/𝟭𝟴) tore through the opposition to bowl them out for 93 – 𝘢 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦.

𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟱 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿:

Union continued their fine form with a 𝟵𝟵-𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 over Elkanah House. A 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆 from 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 (𝟭𝟭𝟮 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝟴𝟰 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀) set up the total of 189. In reply, Elkanah were dismissed for 90, with 𝗟𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗶 (𝟯/𝟭𝟯) and 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘆𝘂 𝗞𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼 (𝟮/𝟭𝟳) leading the bowling attack.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟲 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿:

The final game against De Hoop went right down to the wire. Union posted 101, with 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 anchoring the innings on 𝟰𝟭 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁. Despite great effort from 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀 (𝟮/𝟮𝟬), De Hoop reached the target off the second last ball, clinching a tense 𝟮-𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗻.

Three of our talented young rugby players – 𝗜𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗠𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶, 𝗔𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗵𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗡𝗸𝗼𝗺𝗼 and 𝗞𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗮 – proudly represented the 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 at this year’s U15 Iqhawe Week, held at Langenhoven Gimnasium in Oudtshoorn from 3 to 8 October.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗣 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, securing victories against SWD (19 – 0), Griffons (39 – 7) and Griquas (27 – 7).
